"Innovation Processes in Medical Education" is the first empirical study to investigate the barriers to successful educational change. Using a qualitative case study approach, it examines the factors that have either supported or impeded change in four medical schools: Case Western Reserve, University of Illinois, McMaster University, and Michigan State University. Following an overview of the historical forces that led to the current structure of the medical school curriculum; the authors discuss their research methodology and data, and analyze their attempts at innovation in each of the four cases, examining the relative merits of each effort. A matrix is developed that will help medical school innovators establish implementation strategies by showing them how to arrive at optimal strategies based on the specific context in which they work.

In recent years, the kinds and quality of care given to the elderly in nursing homes have received intense scrutiny. This book is a self contained course in electromagnetic theory suitable for senior physics and electrical engineering students as well as graduate students whose past has not prepared them well for books such as Jackson or Landau and Lifschitz. The text is liberally sprinkled with worked examples illustrating the application of the theory to various physical problems. The authors investigate the evolution of thought on community development from a methodology and technique to a set of (often normative) principles. Based on an extensive literature study the book argues that the more recently evolved fashionable concepts such as participatory development, people-centred development and empowerment can all be traced to a 'community development' origin. They conclude that community development was not evil but that, in the hands of powerful people, it became a tool of marginalisation and disempowerment. This book departs from the usual principles-based approach and instead takes a predominantly consequentialist (harms and benefits) approach. It aims to be free of abstract philosophy, but will use the analysis of cases and a reasoned approach to examine alternative arguments.
