Since 1994, there have been few attempts to address the theoretical
and practical foundations of effective management in early
childhood education (ECE) and the Foundation Phase in South African
schools, yet the survival and success of ECE centres and schools
depends on the ability of education managers to meet the needs of
the children/learners, educators, parents and the community.
Management in early childhood education provides a comprehensive
overview of the management of ECE centres for children from birth
to nine years old. This book is a resource and reference guide
which includes amongst others Internet sources and templates such
as inventories, financial planning, parents' newsletters and
agendas of staff meetings. It focuses especially on the South
African context by referring to appropriate examples and scenarios
of real-life situations in this country as well as the newly
introduced Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). It also
offers practical applications for the many theoretical frameworks
in South African schools. All the chapters in this third edition
have been updated, and each one begins with learning outcomes and
key terms. Management in early childhood education is aimed at
student teachers, educators, administrators and child caregivers.

a common language and a shared understanding of person-centred
practice in all areas of healthcare, from hospital and social care
systems, to mental health, learning disability, and rehabilitation
services. This practical and insightful introduction to the

Environmental Impact Assessment collates most of the existing important information regarding the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process in one compact volume. It follows the logical progression of an EIA using international best practice techniques and principles, and now includes the most up-to-date 2012 regulatory information.
Environmental Impact Assessment sets a baseline for EIA in South Africa. It is the first BOOK on this topic written specifically for the South African context, although it is applicable to all developing countries.
Environmental Impact Assessment was written for environmental professionals and students entering the field for the first time, but it will also provide practical advice for advanced students and experienced consultants working in related fields.
In a South African business environment characterised by change,
turbulence and competitiveness, strategy is even more crucial today
than ever before. Many people's lives and jobs are affected by
strategic decisions, and far too often top management develops a
strategy that is never communicated to or fully understood by other
levels of management and employees, or is not even relevant to the
future survival of the company. Strategic management explains the
principles and application of the strategic management process,
vital to the continued success of every organisation. This is the
third edition of Strategic management, the first specifically
southern African handbook on this subject. It emphasises the
important role of corporate governance, with specific reference to
the King III Report. Appropriate South African examples and case
studies are used to illustrate the latest trends, particularly the
history, development and strategy of South African Breweries (SAB
Limited). Theory is applied to this cohesion case after every
chapter of the book. Key terms, summary questions and answers,
relevant websites and recommended reading lists are also provided.
Strategic management will be invaluable not only to students of
business management but also to organisations, from corporate
companies with management training programmes to small business
ventures struggling to hold their ground in a competitive
environment.

Sexual Behaviour and HIV/AIDS in Europe is the first book to
compare the major population surveys on sexual behaviour and
HIV/AIDS carried out in Europe in recent years. Leading European
researchers explore the differences and similarities between
European countries in patterns of sexual behaviour and responses to
the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As well as providing an empirical and
methodological base for future research, the comparative analyses
lead researchers, policy makers, health-educators and the media to
new insights and a deeper understanding of issues that are of
central concern in many countries. The chapters include discussion
of data on sexual initiation, homosexual and bisexual behaviour,
sexual practices, sexual partners, risk behaviour, STDs, preventive
practices, the normative context, knowledge of HIV/AIDS, and
attitudes towards people with HIV/AIDS. The book results from a
major European Concerted Action, funded by the European Union
Biomedical and Health Research programme (BIOMED), and coordinated
by the Centre d'Etudes Sociologiques of the Facultes Universitaires
Saint-Louis, Brussels, Belgium. It follows Sexual Interactions and
HIV Risk, published in 1997.
While crime on the whole is a matter of grave concern in South
Africa, crime involving juvenile offenders is particularly so and
it is on the rise. Sexual offences among children are occurring
more frequently, and children are increasingly being trafficked and
used as sex workers or slaves. Despite specific laws having been
promulgated to protect them, sexual abuse of children and neglect
are rife, with many children growing up in a very unforgiving
environment that never allows them the opportunity to develop
morally according to the prescriptions of a democratic society.
Child and youth misbehaviour in South Africa addresses the complex
and poorly understood phenomenon of juvenile misbehaviour. It
discusses and analyses various theories on the nature and causes of
aberrant behaviour, and assesses them critically with regard to
their applicability to South Africa. In order to understand the
youth misbehaviour problem as it manifests in this country, it is
essential that the position of youths be understood. Solutions may
be found by considering the following: The difficulty in
demarcating the position of children in South Africa; The local
risk factors associated with juvenile misbehaviour; The effective
processing and treatment of youthful offenders by the South African
criminal justice system; Preventive measures based on
constitutional guidelines. Child and youth misbehaviour in South
Africa is aimed at enabling both practitioners and students to
address the plight of the South African youth in a constructive way
and so become part of creating a safer South Africa for its people.

The world is in an environmental crisis dominated by environmental
issues and risks such as loss of biodiversity, pollution,
deforestation, urbanisation and many others. For many commentators,
the solution lies in the provision of adequate education, including
environmental education. Environmental education and education for
sustainability - some South African perspectives perceptively
addresses topics such as a number of environmental issues and risks
of which learners need to be made aware; the history of
environmental education, both internationally and in South Africa;
the ways in which our deeply held value assumptions and even our
religious convictions affect our attitudes towards environmental
issues and environmental education; the meaning of "education for
sustainability"; curriculum development and the teaching and
learning of environmental education; environmental education in the
non-formal sector; environmental education and training in
industry; an introduction to research in environmental education.
School nurses serve at the front lines of the everyday struggle for
our children's health, yet they are often perceived as little more
than glorified dispensers of bandages. This false perception, held
by many parents, officials, and administrators, does a serious
disservice to this dedicated group of health professionals. "Angels
in Disguise" tells the history of school nursing through the eyes,
ears, and hearts of school nurses serving throughout the United
States. By sharing their personal experiences, these nurses
illustrate their love and compassion and throw the doors wide open
on this often-undervalued profession, enabling readers to see into
their world and understand how much they truly care for the
children they treat. This collection of heartwarming stories offers
unique insight into the daily responsibilities and duties of school
nurses and serves to raise public awareness of the dedication,
leadership, and exemplary pediatric health care provided by the
devoted women and men who care for America's schoolchildren. The
sophisticated medical health care required in schools today can
only be delivered by qualified professional school personnel, and
that challenge is met by having a school nurse in every school
facility.
Over the next few years, the Connecting for Health IT programme for
the NHS in England is due to implement electronic prescribing
systems at all hospitals in England. Furthermore, the other UK
countries are likely to follow suit with clinical IT implementation
programmes, and these developments will generate interest in
electronic prescribing at European and international level. There
is therefore likely to be an exponential growth in the significance
of electronic prescribing over the next ten years. Principles of
Electronic Prescribing discusses the basic principles of design and
implementation of secondary care electronic medicines management
systems, and how their design and configuration can impact on
benefits realization, hospital workflow and clinical practice.
