Demonstrating that public health and prevention program development
is as much art as science, this book brings together expert program
developers to offer practical guidance and principles in developing
effective behavior-change curricula. Feinberg and the team of
experienced contributors cover evidence-based programs addressing a
range of physical, mental, and behavioral health problems,
including ones targeting families, specific populations, and
developmental stages. The contributors describe their own
professional journeys and decisions in creating, refining, testing,
and disseminating a range of programs and strategies. Readers will
learn about selecting change-promoting targets based on existing
research; developing and creating effective and engaging content;
considering implementation and dissemination contexts in the
development process; and revising, refining, expanding,
abbreviating, and adapting a curriculum across multiple iterations.
Designing Evidence-Based Public Health and Prevention Programs is
essential reading for prevention scientists, prevention
practitioners, and program developers in community agencies. It
also provides a unique resource for graduate students and
postgraduates in family sciences, developmental psychology,
clinical psychology, social work, education, nursing, public
health, and counselling.

Nurse educators and managers of nursing schools function within the
dynamics of a kaleidoscope of environments - in their schools,
within the parameters of professional and higher education policies
and legislation, and, in South Africa, in an extremely diverse
society. Since they are part of the global nursing community, the
realities of international standards compound their
responsibilities. Nurse educators' guide to management acknowledges
these challenges and aims to empower nurse educators and managers
of nursing schools by creating awareness of areas that need to be
explored and embraced to function effectively. Nurse educators'
guide to management has been thoroughly revised to ensure relevance
and currency. Two new chapters have been included - one on the
essential technological environment and its management in the
education of nurses, and the other on the management environment
and its dynamics in a nursing school today. Nurse educators' guide
to management also addresses the philosophical and sociocultural,
professional and ethical, leadership and quality challenges that a
nursing school has to face as well as the healthcare, regulatory
and educational environments in which a nursing school in South
Africa functions. The mission of a nursing school in society and
how it empowers through alliances and networking are extensively
explored. This book is aimed at educators, managers of nursing
schools and students preparing themselves for a career in nursing
education. The authors of the book are experienced nursing
professionals with a special interest in the education of nurses
and advancement of the structures, processes and outcomes of
nursing education at institutional and national levels.

This book offers an extensive look into the ways living through the
COVID-19 pandemic has deepened our understanding of the crises
people experience in their relationships with work. Leading experts
explore burnout as an occupational phenomenon that arises through
mismatches between workplace and individuals on the day-to-day
patterns in work life. By disrupting where, when, and how people
worked, pandemic measures upset the delicate balances in place
regarding core areas of work life. Chapters examine the profound
implications of social distancing on the quality and frequency of
social encounters among colleagues, with management, and with
clientele. The book covers a variety of occupational groups such as
those in the healthcare and education sectors, and demonstrates the
advantages and strains that come with working from home. The
authors also consider the broader social context of working through
the pandemic regarding risks and rewards for essential workers. By
focusing on changes in organisational structures, policies, and
practices, this book looks at effective ways forward in both
recovering from this pandemic and preparing for further workplace
disruptions. A wide audience of students and researchers in
psychology, management, business, healthcare, and social sciences,
as well as policy makers in government and professional
organisations, will benefit from this detailed insight into the
ways COVID-19 has affected contemporary work attitudes and
practices.
The British apprenticeship model of nurse training, developed under
Florence Nightingale's influence from 1860 at St Thomas's Hospital,
gained national and world-wide recognition. Its end was heralded
with the publication of the last national syllabus from the General
Nursing Council for England and Wales in 1977. This apprenticeship
model, a crucial part of the history of British health care for
over a century, is the subject of this book. Primary evidence, much
of it original, is gained from Parliamentary debates and reports,
syllabuses, long neglected nursing textbooks, major governmental
and professional reports, and the voices of nurses themselves
expressed through their professional journals. Primary sources are
systematically re-examined and contextually interpreted in the
light of new evidence. The study in particular interprets the
contemporary attitudes and moral values underpinning the
apprenticeship system, especially the place of vocation. The
reasons for the ending of this system, arising in part from the
cultural shifts of the 1960s, are explained in relation to this
historical moral context. The reader sees how the
self-understanding of the profession shifts, with much tension and
disagreement, as mores change. The book fills a major gap in the
history of nurse training, by giving a sustained account of the
apprenticeship model of nursing in context, and charting changing
values away from the historic vocational tradition. Its copious use
of primary sources will make this a key text for nurses, historians
and policy makers.

Discussion regarding health care in the United States usually
centers around the doctors and insurance companies. This book deals
with one group that is largely overlooked: nurses. As an example of
white collar workforce, nurses are segmented by class. Amongst this
group is a class-conscious working class, a status-conscious
nursing management and a class- and status-conscious mid-level.
This book focuses on nurses' positions in the labor process and
their reaction to that labor process, their choice of collective
strategy (trade unionism, professional unionism, or
professionalization), and why they choose these roles.
Worried about getting the dose wrong?Don't know your fractions from
your decimals? You're not alone! Many people are not comfortable
with their mathematical abilities but for most it's not a life or
death situation. For nurses, however, a 'bad maths day' can have
catastrophic consequences if drug dosages are calculated
incorrectly.Practical Nursing Calculations provides easy to
understand explanations of key calculations. The many exercises
offer opportunities to practise basic problem-solving to help build
your confidence. The use of real-life situations demonstrates how
maths is actually applied when working with patients. Realistic
scenarios introduce common presenting illnesses and the medications
used to treat them, and enables you to calculate their correct
dosages. This book has been developed to assist you to gain
competency in basic mathematical skills and problem-solving
techniques which require applied or conceptual mathematics.
