An on-the-go reference for hospice nurses and those interested in
end-of-life care, this practical guide covers the essential
elements in the compassionate and holistic care of terminally ill
patients and their families. Nurses care for patients facing
end-of-life issues in every practice specialty, and as the American
population continues to age the need for proficiency in end-of-life
skills will become increasingly important. This book is an
invaluable resource that provides emotional, administrative, and
palliative support, whether in a hospice, long-term care facility,
or even in acute care settings. This vital go-to text clearly and
concisely lays out not only how to care for patients facing
end-of-life issues, but also how to engage in self-care and cope
with occupational stress. Beginning with an overview of hospice
care, including its history and philosophy, this book offers a
timeline of the growth of the hospice movement in the U.S.
Subsequent sections include up-to-date information on the clinical
responsibilities of the hospice nurse in addressing the physical,
psychological, and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and
their families in a culturally sensitive way. This book also
outlines the administrative duties of the hospice nurse, including
hospice documentation, a review of hospice regulations, and quality
management. The closing section focuses on occupational stress in
hospice nursing and how to engage in self-care. This text can serve
as a useful clinical resource and also as a reference for nurses
seeking hospice certification from the Hospice and Palliative
Credentialing Center. This book was originally published under the
Fast Facts series by Springer Publishing Company.
International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP) functions
as a common language for nursing in Europe. It is developed as a
common nomenclature and classification system, reflecting the
specific clinical realities of nursing practice. Telenurse promotes
the use of ICNP in Europe according to a double strategy involving
the following approaches; 1) organisation of dissemination
conferences on a European level and dissemination meetings on a
national level. 2. Building of simple demonstrators illustrating
possible real uses of ICNP in shared electronic patient records.
Telenurse has focused on two aspects of the use of ICNP in
electronic records. Firstly, entry of ICNP data in relation to
daily systematic documentation of nursing care and secondly,
statistical analysis of ICNP data extracted from the electronic
patient records in relation to the development of clinical quality
and resource management. In relation to the DataIn phase Telenurse
spans both streams within the group of projects concerned with
electronic patient records, viz. the stream concerned with the
architecture of electronic patient records and the stream concerned
with the architecture of terminology's. In relation to the DataOut
phase the small scale demonstrators of electronic patient records
have been equipped with data extraction mechanisms for clinical
databases. These developments have been supplemented by software
showing how the results of the analysis of data stored in the
databases can be fed back to clinical practice using electronic
means.
Dorothy Dore was born in the Philippines to a British father who
served there in the Spanish American War, and to a Filipina mestiza
mother. This young woman was attending an exclusive private school
when Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941. The Japanese
Imperial Army made a swift invasion of the Philippines, and
Dorothy's life became a nightmare. As recounted in this moving
memoir, Dorothy studied nursing so that she could support the
United States Armed Forces Far East (USAFFE). She spent the war
years on the run, working for the USAFFE when she could, but
abandoning those duties when her family was in need. Dorothy
recalls the sacrifices of her family, the brutal treatment of
civilians by the Japanese, and the vainglorious actions of some of
the USAFFE guerrilla leaders. It is a compelling story of love,
loss, family, courage, and survival during an especially horrifying
time.
Reacting against the dominance of obligation-based moral theories
in both general and nursing ethics, the author proposes a 'strong'
(action-guiding) account of a virtue-based approach to moral
decision-making within contemporary nursing practice. Merits and
criticisms of obligation and virtue-based approaches to morality
are identified and examined. One of the author's central premises
is that the notions of moral goodness and badness carry more moral
weight than the traditionally important notions of moral rightness
and wrongness. Therefore, the author argues that in order to
deliver morally good care, it is vital to consider the kind of
nurse one is and this means examining one's moral character. This
book will be rewarding reading for a wide range of readers
including clinical nurses, nurse educators and nurse ethicists;
indeed, anyone interested in morality and ethics and the work of
nurses will find this book stimulating reading.

In microeconomics, the decisions and functioning of individual consumers and households (what to do, what to buy, etc.), and firms or other organisations (what goods to produce, how to produce them, what prices to charge, etc.) are considered. It includes the study of the demand, supply and prices of individual goods and services such as petrol, maize, haircuts and medical services.
Understanding microeconomics is a comprehensive introduction to microeconomics in general, set against a contemporary South African background. The easy style and many practical examples make the content extremely accessible. The book covers all the material usually prescribed for introductory courses, and it lays a solid foundation for intermediate and advanced studies in economics.
This second edition is a thoroughly revised and slightly expanded version of the original one. Examples have been adjusted (where necessary), a few new topics are introduced and review questions are provided at the end of each chapter.
This book aims to clarify the potential association between frailty
and cardiovascular disease in older people. Covering the biological
as well as the clinical point of view, it allows researchers and
clinicians to discover the significance of this topic. The
contributions cover the most important aspects in the potential
relationship between frailty and cardiovascular disease. In
particular, authoritative authors in this field have clarified the
definition and the epidemiology of frailty and cardiovascular
disease in older people. A large part of the volume is dedicated to
the biological mechanisms of frailty and cardiovascular disease,
trying to find those in common between these two conditions. Since
this book is dedicated to both researchers and clinicians, we have
proposed some chapters to the importance of comprehensive geriatric
assessment in the evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular
diseases and frailty. In this regard, the importance of geriatric
evaluation in cardiac surgery for older people is well covered.
Finally, the importance of cardiac rehabilitation and physical
exercise is summarized, being, actually, the most important
treatments for both frailty and cardiovascular disease. Written by
many well-known and widely published experts in their respective
fields, this book will appeal to a wide readership such as
researchers in the field and clinicians, especially suited in
geriatric medicine and cardiology who, every day, face frail older
patients.
American health is at a crossroads with millions of people needing
healthcare yet the system cannot keep up with the demand. We need
healthcare but somehow it all seems complicated and not simple to
attain. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants, working
collaboratively shoulder to shoulder with physicians and other
healthcare professionals can help resolve this mounting crisis. The
book ends with a passionate plea to increase the use of the primary
care workforce to prevent chronic care diseases and promote healthy
living. Americans deserve the very best that healthcare has to
offer.
Now in its second decade of publication, this landmark series
draws together and critically reviews all the existing research in
specific areas of nursing practice, nursing care delivery, nursing
education, and the professional aspects of nursing.
This book is the first to focus on the work of nearly 600 sisters
from 12 different Catholic orders who nursed wounded and sick Union
and Confederate soldiers between 1860 and 1865. Drawing on archival
sources and the personal papers of the women who participated,
Maher gives a detailed account of their experiences: how they were
called into service, where they served, what duties they performed,
how they looked on their mission, and how they were viewed by those
who worked with them. Through service on the battlefield, in
hospitals, and on transport boats, the sisters became known for
their dedication and practical skills. Maher begins with a
dicussion of Catholic sisters in mid-nineteenth century America and
the development of Catholic nursing during that period. While other
women were prohibited by custom from nursing outside the home,
Catholic sisters had established the practice of caring for the
sick in the community and providing nursing care during epidemics
and other public crises. During the Civil War, their assistance was
sought by Union and Confederate governmental, military, and medical
authorities. Through service on the battlefield, in hospitals, and
on transport boats, the sisters became known for their dedication
and practical skills. Maher examines the impact of their work in
both modifying negative pre-Civil War attitudes towards Catholics
and sisters and in paving the way for the development of a nursing
profession outside the Catholic orders. Basing her study on
letters, journals, and memoirs containing the sisters' personal
accounts of their experiences, Civil War histories, and official
medical and surgical records, Maher offers a richly detailed
picture of a little-known aspect of U.S. history. Of particular
interest for schools of nursing, Catholic educational institutions,
and history courses concerning women's studies, the Civil War
period, religion, and Catholicism.
While a great deal has been written on the topic already, this textbook focuses on introducing human rights law in a comprehensive but easy-to-understand manner to the benefit of both lecturers and students. It is hoped that this work will assist lecturers who teach the subject at first- or second-year level, both in the LLB degree and other university programmes, as well as non-governmental organisations and others parties who train their staff or stakeholders in basic principles of the law. The book should also benefit students by covering the breadth of human rights law directly applicable to students studying law in South Africa.
The text contains a number of scenarios to help readers grasp the material being discussed by illustrating relevant constitutional principles and issues. Cases are integrated into the text in a manner that should facilitate an understanding of their application. This book contains complete court judgments, statutes, a bibliography and questions to respective chapters which will assist lecturers and students in finding their way beyond the book at whatever level they deem appropriate.

Psychiatric disorders in adolescents are an important social
problem which is relevant to almost all healthcare professionals.
According to the results of The National Comorbidity
Survey-Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A), the lifetime prevalence of
anxiety, behavior, mood, and substance use disorders among
adolescents was 31.9%, 19.1%, 14.3%, and 11.4%, respectively.
Approximately 40% of participants in this survey with one class of
disorder also met criteria for another class of lifetime disorder.
Comorbidity is increasingly recognized as a key feature of mental
disorders among adolescents. Female adolescents are more likely
than males to have mood and anxiety disorders, but less likely to
have behavioral and substance use disorders. Regretfully, medical
professionals are not sufficiently trained about adolescent
psychiatric disorders. For example, primary care providers
correctly identify less than a fourth of youth with a depressive or
anxiety disorder. Also, many clinicians underestimate the
importance of the problem of adolescent psychiatric illnesses and
suicidal behavior. Lack of skilled medical providers impedes the
delivery of needed services to adolescents with mental health
issues. This coupled with a lag in the ability of primary health
care services to incorporate psychiatric interventions, and a
failure of public health initiatives to pay attention to adolescent
mental health problems has led to continuing gaps in care over
decades despite the public pronouncements of needs. In this book
you will find relevant information for health professionals, since
we believe that the mental health of adolescents is essential for
sustaining healthy and productive societies.
