Adult learning offers practical guidelines, underpinned by sound
scholarship, for the design and implementation of learning events.
The author illuminates this process, which she views as a
learning-centred and dialogic endeavour, by drawing on perennial
and cutting-edge theory as well as on personal experience. She
guides the reader in exploring the theory on adult learners and
their needs, the learning process and strategies that educators can
use for guiding and facilitating learning. This culminates in a
discussion of a specific strategy for designing and implementing
dialogic learning events - the seven steps of planning. She
explains in practical terms how this strategy puts dialogic
teaching into action, using learning tasks to structure dialogue
with learners.
Sociology will always remain a dynamic and living science due to
its roots in the study of human action and interaction. Sociology
within the nursing practice therefore aims to understanding society
and its impact on individuals in order to give total patient care.
In this, the 5th edition of Nursing sociology, substantial
attention has been given to aspects of socialisation, social
interaction, structure and relationships, social stratification,
group dynamics, institutions, organisations and social problems
encountered within the nursing practice. Pertinent examples of the
manifestation of sociology in the nursing profession as currently
experienced in South Africa are also included. Written from a
multicultural perspective, it reflects on South Africa's diversity
where complex sociological ideas are explained in such a way that
is easy to follow.
Master's and doctoral students often have unnecessary difficulty
with the technical requirements of constructing a research
proposal, writing a thesis and submitting it for examination.
Students can expect expert supervision in conducting their research
and drawing conclusions, but the responsibility for presenting
their work in the correct way and in accordance with accepted
conventions is theirs alone. This guide has been developed in
response to both student's and supervisors' needs. The step-by-step
discussion of the entire thesis undertaking spells out information
for students that academics often take for granted, and that
students often struggle to access on their own.
Traditionally, nursing is acknowledged as a caring profession and
is associated with advocating for others. However, incivility is
increasingly occurring amongst nurses, both in the clinical and
academic environments, and is causing affected nurses both
psychological and physical harm. Incivility Among Nursing
Professionals in Clinical and Academic Environments: Emerging
Research and Opportunities provides emerging views and consequences
surrounding workplace bullying in the healthcare profession
including recognizing the signs and symptoms of incivility in the
workplace, identifying ways in which affected nurses can seek help,
and examining healthy methods of coping with the incivility.
Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as human
resources, therapy, and clinical nursing, this book is ideally
designed for nurses, managers, healthcare workers and consumers,
hospital and clinical staff, researchers, students, and
policymakers.
Assessment is an important part of any psychologist's role and the
outcome can have consequences, positive and negative, for the
person being assessed. The principles and practice of psychological
assessment is a guide to drawing up, administering and interpreting
assessment procedures, and judging whether the techniques used are
theoretically and procedurally sound. It also takes a special look
at assessment from an organisational perspective, because although
many of the technical and scientific issues with respect to
psychological assessment are common to all areas of applied
psychology, there are numerous issues and applications that are
unique to the organisational context. The principles and practice
of psychological assessment is more of a "how to" than a critical
text, but includes some background information and in-depth
theorising for more problematic issues. A glossary of terms and a
unique cognitive map of psychological tests are provided. Changes
in this second edition include two new chapters, one on Assessing
integrity (which previously formed part of the chapter on
personality) and a new chapter on Assessment in cross-cultural
contexts, where the theoretical and practical problems associated
with assessing people in their non-native language are described
and ways of addressing these are put forward. Throughout the text,
references and examples have been updated and issues raised in
recent texts have been addressed. Contents include the following:
Properties of a good measuring technique; ways of categorising the
observation process; techniques used in measurement; errors
inherent in the assessment process; combining and interpreting
results; fairness, bias and discrimination; assessing
cross-culturally; designing and locating appropriate assessment
centre exercises; assessing integrity. The principles and practice
of psychological assessment is aimed at undergraduate and honours
students of psychology and industrial psychology, as well as at
practitioners.

The purpose of this book is to provide a first introduction for an undergraduate student in property law. As with earlier editions this eighth edition of the Introduction to the Law of Property was written specifically for students in an undergraduate module on the law of property. Therefore, the contents are restricted to what the authors regard as essential for these students. Footnotes have not been used for the same reason; in an introductory module the emphasis should arguably fall on understanding basic concepts and principles, rather than on additional reading material. However, extensive use is made of examples from case law.
Under the new authorship the Introduction still emphasises the influence of the constitutional framework on the development of this aspect of private law. This eighth edition of the Introduction is published as part of the series of Juta’s Property Law Library. The aim of this series is to illustrate the interplay between the common law, the constitution and legal reform in a constitutional system. As an introduction, the book is different from the other volumes in the series in that it is specifically aimed at students.
In updating the Introduction cognisance was also taken of the Qualification standards for the Bachelor of Laws published by the HEQC in May 2015, and the attributes of a graduate that was included in the report. Therefore, the 2021 edition contains electronic resources that will assist students to be better prepared for the legal profession with an appreciation of the constitutional values and principles underpinning the law, and an understanding that the law is a dynamic and developing discipline.

A topical presentation of firsthand accounts from some of the
thousands of army and navy nurses who served both stateside and
overseas during World War II, this book tells the stories of the
brave women who used any and all resources to save as many lives as
possible. Although military nurses could have made more money as
civilians, thousands chose to leave the warmth and security of home
to care for the young men who went off to war. They were not saints
but vibrant women whose performance changed the face of both
military and civilian nursing. Jackson's account follows both army
and navy nurses from the time they joined the military, through
their active service, to their lives today.
The jobs done by military nurses were valuable and varied. Some
worked in clean stateside hospitals. Some found themselves nursing
in tents or bombed-out buildings. Others entered hospitals so
recently occupied by Axis forces that Nazi propaganda still covered
the walls. While often treating ordinary accidents and illnesses,
they were responsible for men with wounds so disfiguring that it
took all of their willpower to maintain the hopeful attitude that
the men so desperately required. From the humorous account of a
nurse in her forties, who joined the war effort despite the smirks
of those much younger, to the sorrow shared when men and women were
separated and became prisoners of war, these are the stories of
women who lived under extraordinary circumstances in an amazing
time, women who, even today, bear emotional scars along with their
lasting pride.
Researchers are often confronted with problems in the writing and
successful completion of a research report, dissertation or thesis.

manual that will assist researchers in their research methodologies
with brief and up-to-date guidelines. Contents include the
following: Aspects of research; Types of research that can be
undertaken; Sources of topics for scientific research; Research
problems; Writing and presenting of research proposals; Data
collection and sampling; Academic writing; Ethics in research.
"Patients from Hell" is a collection of true stories of difficult
encounters with patients and their diseases. It presents situations
from these encounters that provoke a broad range of human emotions,
from humorous to sad situations to situations that can and likely
will provoke anger from the reader. It starts out telling the
exploits of "Wonder Woman" and leads to Emergency Room experiences
as well as many other venues of medical care. Details are presented
in everyday language that allow the lay person to understand the
esoteric as well as that better known.
This unique book helps nurses identify and develop the personal
qualities that go into "artful" nursing practice. Based on nurse
stories that portray the art of nursing, the book guides students
to analyse how each personal quality or concept is actualised in
the story, understand the challenges to enactment of the concept,
and then apply the concept experientially through group and
individual exercises. The text illustrates and elaborates onthe
forms of knowledge used by nurses and concepts central to the art
of nursing such as care, spirituality, presence, compassion,
self-care and advocacy.
