Since their emergence around 1985, the new media have significantly changed the way in which we, the consumers, view and interact with our everyday world. Developed countries already have access to advanced new media applications, while developing countries are continually making innovations and increasing their presence in the new media sector. New media in the information society discusses social, economic, educational, political and regulatory aspects of the new media, as well as their impact on society and users in general. New media in the information society guides the student through the world of new media - from earliest history to modern-day theories and applications. Large-scale issues such as e-government, cyber crime and Internet policy are explored, although the focus remains on the impact of new media on the individual. Revision questions are provided for each chapter. Contents include the following: Social networking; virtual worlds; new media and journalism: offline and online newspapers and magazines; mobile telecommunications, promotion and distribution; globalisation and the public broadcaster; information and communication technology infrastructure in South Africa and the rest of Africa; internet addiction disorder. New media in the information society is aimed at senior undergraduate students who are studying new media courses or information and communication technology modules, as well as at students of telecommunications policy and regulation. Telecommunications policy researchers and ICT sector analysts will also find this book useful.

Meaningful assessment for 21st century learning is aimed at the broader educational community of scholars engaged in meaningful and effective educational assessment to promote 21st century skills.
HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics. 'Oh Mama, how spiritless, how tame was Edward's manner in reading to us last night I felt for my sister most severely. Yet she bore it with so much composure, she seemed scarcely to notice it. I could hardly keep my seat.' Spirited and impulsive, Marianne Dashwood is the complete opposite to her controlled and sensible sister, Elinor. When it comes to matters of the heart, Marianne is passionate and romantic and soon falls for the charming, but unreliable Mr Willoughby. Elinor, in contrast, copes stoically with the news that her love, Edward Ferrars is promised to another. It is through their shared experiences of love that both sisters come to learn that the key to a successful match comes from finding the perfect mixture of rationality and feeling.

Evidential Aspects of Law Enforcement explains technical legal terms in a straightforward and practical way, and contains the information that all law enforcement officers require to perform their duties effectively.
Denis Cowen (1917-2007) is renowned for his work on negotiable instruments. Selected Essays presents readers with other facets of his life's work. His seminal essays and articles helped define areas of law such as constitutional law, environmental law, law of property and statutory interpretation. As a public intellectual in the liberal tradition, he spoke with great timeliness, insight and insistence, during apartheid, about the need for a court-enforceable bill of rights, academic freedom and pre-publication censorship. Cowen on Law: Selected Essays spans more than 50 years of his lively, contentious and beautifully constructed texts. Leading legal thinkers introduce newly-accessible texts and provide us with a contemporary, evaluative lens. The book reveals to readers a fascinating mind. It also serves as an engrossing reflection on South Africa's legal past as well as the intersection of law and society.

The third edition of Bail provides a critical discussion of past and current bail law, including the impact of the Constitution on statutory interpretation and practice. He makes concrete suggestions, where necessary, on the application of the law in a setting where tension between the liberty of the individual and the troubling crime rate calls for a measured and practical approach. This edition features extensive quotations from the authorities, with English translations of Afrikaans judgments. The book also includes an invaluable ‘Quickfinder’ section in which the most important bail procedures are set out in a clear, concise and easily accessible format. Notice of motion templates are also provided. In this, the third edition of Bail, the author provides a critical discussion of past and current bail law, including the impact of the Constitution on statutory interpretation and practice.

Every child constantly changes and undergoes processes of emotional, cognitive, normative and physical development. At each age and stage of development children need continued support and assurance from adults in order to assimilate the effects of these changes. The pace of the child's development and its outcome are determined by both genetic factors and the influence of the environment. The young child in context: a psycho-social perspective examines the complex yet clearly defined phases in child development and suggests how best to encourage and assist children through the formative first nine years of their lives. In the revised second edition, the case is put more strongly that the context of each child is of crucial importance and that stimulation is essential in enabling the child to reach his or her full potential. The young child in context follows two different perspectives on the development of the young child: psychological and social-educational. Each chapter provides definitions of concepts, self-test questions, field assignments, additional assignments for revision and case studies related to the topics covered. Issues are discussed within a South African context.
Statistics and their analysis are key to making mathematical sense of the world around us. In this textbook the authors underscore the importance of statistical methods and calculation skills and explain clearly and simply the key concepts and principles of statistics, so that they are easy to understand. The main purpose of the book is to make students more confident about handling statistical data and enable them to understand the meaning of the results obtained. Statistical methods cover the collection of data, descriptive methods and inferential methods of analysis. Calculation skills cover elementary calculations, percentages and ratios, equations, graphs and interest calculations. The elementary calculations include basic calculations, such as exponents, decimals, scientific notation, logarithms, rounding and VAT calculations. This book teaches students with no mathematics background how to do basic calculations before concentrating on the statistical applications. For some courses, calculations such as interest, future values of investments, graphs and ratios form part of the core module and are also covered in this book.
The new world of work is characterised by increased globalisation, digitalisation and virtualisation, as well as the continuous emergence of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0) technologies. These aspects have irrevocably transformed the world of work, placing increased emphasis on HR professionals to be effective change agents. The role of HR professionals is likely to become more pronounced in the future. Given the numerous challenges South Africa faces within the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the aim of this book is to provide a South Africa perspective on human resource management (HRM) within the new world of work.
The motivation for this particular law of obligations is the notion that the core assumptions of the dogmatic structure of each field, and of the law of obligations as a whole, can be expected to begin to show their imperfections more clearly the further one moves from the centre, and that this kind of examination affords an opportunity to reassess both the current premises in each field as well as the overall structure of obligations. |
