HEARD ISLAND, an improbably remote speck in the far Southern Ocean, lies four thousand kilometres to the south-west of Australia - with Antarctica its nearest continent. By 1964 it had been the object of a number of expeditions, but none reaching the summit of its 9000-foot volcanic peak "Big Ben'. In that year Warwick Deacock resolved to rectify this omission, and assembled a party of nine with impressive credentials embracing mountaineering, exploration, science and medicine, plus his own organisation and leadership skills as a former Major in the British Army. But first they had to get there. Heard had no airstrip and was on no steamer route; the only way was by sea in their own vessel. Approached from Australia, the island lay in the teeth of the 'Roaring Forties'and 'Furious Fifties'. One name, only, came to mind as the skipper to navigate them safely to their destination, and safely home - the veteran mountaineer turned high-latitude sailor H. W. 'Bill' Tilman, already renowned for his 'sailing to climb' expeditions to Patagonia, Greenland and Arctic Canada, and the sub-Antarctic archipelagos of Crozet and Kerguelen, to the north-west of Heard Island. He readily 'signed on' to Warwick Deacock's team of proven individuals and their well-found sailing vessel Patanela. In this first-hand account, as fresh today as on its first publication fifty years ago, Philip Temple invites us all on this superbly conducted, happy and successful expedition, aided by many previously unpublished photographs by Warwick Deacock. 'The Skipper' - a man not free with his praise - described the enterprise as 'a complete thing'. photographs, maps, drawings

Four Guys in a Boat - A Decade of Rum, Cigars, Poker and Lies (Paperback): Tom Watkins Four Guys in a Boat - A Decade of Rum, Cigars, Poker and Lies (Paperback)
Tom Watkins
R242 R229 Discovery Miles 2 290 Save R13 (5%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This breezy escapist tale chronicles the misadventures of a motley crew of college professors who abandon their landlocked lives (and wives) for one week every year and go sailing. Author Tom Watkins vividly recounts a decade's worth of these annual escapes, as the adventurous academics fish, dive, drink, and dream together, all the while coming to a better understanding of themselves and each other. Their travels take them to such exotic locales as the Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, and the Grenadines, and along the way they encounter a colorful array of salty characters, including famed sailor and author John Caldwell and Undine, the jolly German manager of a tropical restaurant hidden by lush vegetation. Overflowing with rum, cigars, and poker chips, this is a hilarious and insightful glimpse into the secret lives of men.

Kaitlin Sandeno was one of the world's greatest and most versatile swimmers. Competing at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics, she was a part of the world record breaking 4x200-meter relay team and is one of an elite few to medal in three different strokes. In Golden Glow: How Kaitlin Sandeno Achieved Gold in the Pool and in Life, Dan D'Addona recounts Sandeno's amazing swimming career, including her spectacular Olympic performances, and details the impact she has made in the world outside the pool. Breaking into the Olympics at seventeen years old, she became the face of the team with her enthusiasm and bubbly personality. She returned to the Olympics four years later to have one of the most dominating meets by an American woman in history. But Sandeno's legacy in the pool is nothing compared to how she has used her platform to help those around her. She is the national spokesperson for the Jessie Rees Foundation and spreads joy around the country to children with cancer. She has emceed Olympic trials, hosted multiple shows for USA Swimming, and has given back to her sport, working for USA Swimming and coaching youth teams. Golden Glow is not only the story of how hard work and perseverance led Sandeno to Olympic gold, but also how she has used her success in the pool to inspire those around her.

Sailing to the Edge of Time - The Promise, the Challenges, and the Freedom of Ocean Voyaging (Paperback): John Kretschmer Sailing to the Edge of Time - The Promise, the Challenges, and the Freedom of Ocean Voyaging (Paperback)
John Kretschmer
R385 Discovery Miles 3 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

John Kretschmer is sailing's practical philosopher - as much a doer as a thinker. And that is the overarching theme of this chronicle of a sailing life. Often amusing, sometimes poignant, occasionally terrifying but always inspiring, his deeply personal account is a welcome reminder of the good life waiting at sea. With hundreds of thousands of nautical miles under his keel, John's adventures have taken him several times around the world, with challenging crossings of the Atlantic and the Pacific, a narrow escape from a coup in Yemen, an unlikely deliverance from a coral reef off Belize as well as more serene, introspective passages where trade winds are blowing and stories are flowing. His crew has included CEOs, actors, writers, teachers, kids - in essence, everyone. John's narrative is interwoven with practical tips and advice in seamanship, but also, and just as importantly, his hard-won insights about making the most of our lives. He truly believes we find out who we really are, and what we are capable of, far from the shackles of land, when we find a place where time changes shape - days may merge into one another, but minutes are memorable. To live adventurously is to live more fully, and that is the life John Kretschmer continues to live. In this book he shares his simple profundities that will inspire those who live to sail, and those seeking something more rewarding from life.

Blokes Up North (Paperback): Blokes Up North (Paperback)
R311 Discovery Miles 3 110 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In a post-exploration world, two relatively ordinary blokes, serving Royal Marines, decided they wanted an extraordinary 21st century adventure. In this refreshingly honest account they re-live the highs and lows of sailing and rowing a tiny open boat, completely unsupported, through one of the most iconic wilderness waterways on the planet - the Northwest Passage across the top of Canada. They describe battling with an Arctic storm miles from land and being caught in the worst sea ice for more than a decade. At one point they are forced to drag Arctic Mariner, their seventeen-foot boat, across ten miles of broken pack ice to reach open water. Their story is enriched by the Inuit people and the incredible wildlife they met along the way, including all-too-close encounters with both grizzly and polar bears. And they relate with honesty how the isolation and stresses of the high Arctic shaped the bond between their two very different personalities. This is neither an expose of global warming, nor a detailed study of Inuit culture. It is not particularly long on the historical quest for the Northwest Passage. It is quite simply the tale of two blokes, up north. b/w photographs, maps, drawings

Navigating the Thames Through London (Paperback, 1st): Robert Ludlow Navigating the Thames Through London (Paperback, 1st)
Robert Ludlow
R300 Discovery Miles 3 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This small book is intended principally as a help to leisure boaters who are not familiar with the Thames through central London. However, Part 2 may well help even the most seasoned of watermen. The length of the river covered is from Margaret Ness in the east, to Putney Bridge in the west. This is the area for which a local knowledge endorsement is required for most commercial skippers. It is a very busy part of the Thames, with every conceivable type of craft likely to be encountered. The book is divided into three parts: The first part gives general information and advice, and in passing, mentions local rules which will be relevant . The second part lists many places the names of which you might read or hear on the radio. The third part outlines the types of hazard you will encounter as you make your way up river on a fold-out chart

The Darkness Below (Paperback): Rod Macdonald The Darkness Below (Paperback)
Rod Macdonald
R572 Discovery Miles 5 720 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

From the best-selling author of four classic UK diving books, comes The Darkness Below - a collection of absorbing adventures gained from a lifetime in diving. As one of the UK's leading Technical Divers, Rod takes the reader on a spellbinding and gripping journey, from first beginnings as a novice scuba diver. Told in intimate detail with a beguiling sense of self-deprecating humour, he recounts epic dives on some of the most fabulous shipwrecks around the world. Terrifying first explorations of virgin shipwrecks far offshore, lost in time and enshrouded in darkness in the silent depths, cram the pages. A daring expedition into the heart of the feared Corryvreckan whirlpool, the third largest in the world, an open sea encounter with Orca killer whales and an agonizing attack of the bends keep the reader engrossed. The palpable gloom, despair and human tragedy of the wrecks is never far away - the cold and darkness of the depths almost resonating with the cries of those who have perished. The fear of entrapment inside a wreck is grippingly described and becomes almost claustrophobic to the reader unfamiliar with the perils of wreck penetration, when snagged nets sometimes billow unseen above the unwary diver. However, there are rewards when survivors from wrecks are keen to speak to someone who has seen and touched their ship that had been lost long ago. This is an unmissable book for all divers and anyone interested in maritime history.

Philip Marsden 1
R311 R284 Discovery Miles 2 840 Save R27 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In an old wooden sloop, Philip Marsden plots a course north from his home in Cornwall. He is sailing for the Summer Isles, a small archipelago near the top of Scotland that holds for him a deep and personal significance. On the way, he must navigate the west coast of Ireland and the Inner Hebrides. Through the people he meets and the tales he uncovers, Marsden builds up a haunting picture of these shores - of imaginary islands and the Celtic otherworld, of the ageless draw of the west, of the life of the sea and perennial loss - and the redemptive power of the imagination. The Summer Isles is an unforgettable account of the search for actual places, invented places, and those places in between that shape the lives of individuals and entire nations.

The Temptress Voyages - SIngle-handed Passage, Temptress Returns (Paperback): Edward Allcard The Temptress Voyages - SIngle-handed Passage, Temptress Returns (Paperback)
Edward Allcard
R382 Discovery Miles 3 820 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Sailing six thousand miles in eighty days, Allcard makes the classic southern route trade-wind crossing westward, and not without incident-severe gales, thief-catching in Spain, avoiding a seductive blonde in Gibraltar, encountering sharks and shoals of flying fish, and narrowly escaping falling overboard to his death when knocked out by gear falling from aloft. Allcard's plan to dodge the worst of the hurricane season on his return voyage is not accommodated by the elements. Through gales and headwinds, and one terrible storm, he takes seventy-four days to reach the Azores from New York, arriving minus his mizzen mast, desperately exhausted, injured, and hungry. The next leg, to Casablanca, is enlivened by a female stowaway, before he makes a safe return to England. Whether describing the pleasures or the trials, the phosphorescent nights or the storms, the operation of his ship or his own introspections, Edward Allcard eloquently conveys his deep appreciation of the sea, and the escape from modern civilisation it offers him.

The Voyage of the Cormorant - A Memoir of the Changeable Sea (Paperback): Christian Beamish The Voyage of the Cormorant - A Memoir of the Changeable Sea (Paperback)
Christian Beamish; Illustrated by Ken Perkins
R395 Discovery Miles 3 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Christian Beamish, a former editor at The Surfer's Journal, envisioned a low-tech, self-reliant exploration for surf along the coast of North America, using primarily clothes and instruments available to his ancestors, and the 18-foot boat he would build by hand in his garage. How the vision met reality and how the two came to shape each other places The Voyage of the Cormorant in the great American tradition of tales of life at sea, and what it has to teach us.

This third volume of the new edition sets out the current state of the network in 146 pages in full colour, with detailed maps of junctions and other key sites on the network, overview maps for each waterway, and route descriptions. It is a unique blend of practical information, maps, background historical notes and colour photographs. It also highlights ongoing waterway restoration projects, in which the author has been personally involved for many years.

Kayak: The New Frontier - The Animated Manual of Intermediate and Advanced Whitewater Technique (Paperback, Second Edition):... Kayak: The New Frontier - The Animated Manual of Intermediate and Advanced Whitewater Technique (Paperback, Second Edition)
William Nealy
R404 Discovery Miles 4 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the 2007, second edition of William Nealy's cult manual of intermediate and advanced whitewater techniques - "Kayak, the New Frontier". Carefully crafted to reflect the latest in paddling technology, William Nealy's classic, illustrated kayaking-skills manual remains dead-on hilarious. In Nealy's day, hardcore hippie hairboaters sucked air in block-long Dancers...but that was then. Today, insane youngsters steer tiny plastic boats down steep creeks with more rocks than water, and surf spinning holes and standing waves for hours without ever leaving site of their beat-up Subaru. Although shorter hair and more frequent bathing will never threaten the soundness of Nealy's illustrated techniques, equipment evolution - especially boats - has created new dynamics between moving water and modern-day paddlers. Professionally updated to reflect the latest technology, "Kayak" is back and more useful and entertaining than ever. You may break a rib laughing, but with Nealy holding your hand you'll look pretty cool doing it. The publisher confidently claims that this, the best-selling how-to-kayak manual in the world.
