This superb artist grade paper from Saunders Waterford has a watermark in the corner for authenticity and 4 deckle edges which are visually beautiful and perfect for float framing. Please note that while Saunders Waterford High White papers are noticeably whiter than the traditional Saunders Waterford paper, they still have a pale cream appearance. This is because it is not currently possible to whiten the paper to a bright white without compromising light-fastness by using Optical Brightening Agents. The whiter shade of Saunders Waterford High White paper is achieved by adding a high white lightfast pigment with good long-life properties, as used in some watercolour paints. Artists grade watercolour paper is archival which means it will not discolour or fall apart over time. It is made of 100% cotton rag. This paper is much more durable than lower grades of paper because it is gelatine surface sized and it is mould-made, both of which mean it can take scrubbing of the surface without falling apart. Saunders Waterford paper is endorsed by the Royal Watercolour Society. Please note, these sheets have a rough finish: they have a rough surface, and are not suitable for detailed watercolour painting. To achieve the outstanding characteristics, like reusable paint when dried on a palette and the high control of paint flow even on soft water-colour papers Schmincke only use the best raw materials. In its coloristic appearance the total assortment is particularly harmonious, balanced and complete.
One main ingredient of the water-colour binding medium is Kordofan Gum Arabic from the southern Sahara region. Like most natural products this traditional water-colour binding medium differs from year to year. Therefore Schmincke is testing Gum Arabic every time before purchase and selects only the best crop of the respective year. This adds small but significant quality advantages. Other formula ingredients are selected equally carefully and of course are integrated in each formula in an individual optimised way to obtain a harmonious assortment, that can be easily picked up by the brush.
Another traditional quality criterion is the re-usability of the Horadam Aquarell water-colours while using the same formulation for tubes and pans. Both properties, the reusability and the control of the paint flow can only be achieved by pouring water-colours into pans in a liquid state, which is really unique.

The colours are chosen according to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the pigment in water colour, ie. granulating, staining or even wash. The resultant colour spectrum ensures the largest number of colours can be mixed from the range. The optimum brilliance of every colour in the Artists' Water Colour range is unparalleled by any other water colour. Remarkably, this brilliance is combined with high permanence.

A European style transparent watercolour, Holbein watercolour also preserves the brush handling qualities inherent in traditional Japanese watercolour techniques. Without ox-gall or other dispersing agents, Holbein watercolour moves slowly, thus permitting greater colour density and brush control. It is a colour line with a consistent creamy texture that remains smooth when dry without cracking, crumbling, chipping or molding in the palette. It may be re-wetted easily like a pan colour. For this reason Holbein does not produce watercolours in pan form but allows artists to create their own selection.
Fill the wells of a suitable palette with the desired colour selection. Permit to dry, then wet the colour when needed. Holbein watercolours produce brilliant transparent washes as well as powerful clean darks when used in more concentrated applications. Engineered to surpass the quality standards set by both North American and European manufacturers, Holbein watercolour is widely preferred around the world for it's handling qualities. Holbein watercolour ranks as the world’s finest.

The Cotman Water Colour range has a more uniform consistency than the Artists' Water Colour range and this benefits beginners as there is less to learn about each individual pigment. The Cotman Water Colour range also relates to the Winsor & Newton Artists' Water Colour range, this enables artists to use colours from both ranges with minimal adjustment to their technique.

paper or a few colored boards. Now you can turn almost any surface
into a toned or black ground for watercolor painting, as well as
collage, pastels, pencils and mixed media work.Mars Black makes our

compositional areas. You can also lift and scrub without damaging

New Gamboge - pigment change Originally produced using Gamboge, a coloured gum from the Garcinia plant, Artists' Water Colour Gamboge was discontinued in 2005, due to its toxic characteristics. Its replacement was a different shade, due to the pigments available and renamed New Gamboge. Due to the above pigment discontinuation, New Gamboge, in both Professional Water Colour and Cotman, has been reformulated once again and, with advances in pigment technology, the colour is much closer to its original namesake, delivering greater authenticity within the spectrum. The pigments have changed from Nickel Dioxine PY153 to Quinacridone PR209 & Azo Nickel Complex PY150
Albrecht Dürer artists' watercolour pencils provide artists with great versatility of expression when drawing, shading and painting in watercolours. High-quality materials, combined with over 250 years of experience, have resulted in watercolour pencils that produce unsurpassed watercolour effects and vibrancy. The coloured surface can be transformed with only a few fine or broad brush strokes to reveal the full and unique power of the colours. Depending on the paper being used, the pigments can be completely dissolved, and will then behave in the same way as classic watercolour paints.
