Pandemics and the Media (Paperback, New edition): Marina Levina Pandemics and the Media (Paperback, New edition)
Marina Levina
R865 Discovery Miles 8 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Offering a comprehensive analysis of mediated representations of global pandemics, this book engages with the construction, management, and classification of difference in the global context of a pandemic, to address what it means - culturally, politically, and economically - to live in an infected, diseased body. Marina Levina argues that mediated representations are essential in translating and making sense of difference as a category of subjectivity and as a mode of organizing and distributing change. Using textual analysis of media texts on pandemics and disease, she illustrates how they represent a larger mediascape that drafts stories of global instabilities and global health. Levina explains how the stories we tell about disease matter; that the media is instrumental in constructing and disseminating these stories; and that mediated narratives of pandemics are rooted in global flows of policies, commerce, and populations. Pandemics are, by definition, global crises.

Copywriting In A Week - Be A Great Copywriter In Seven Simple Steps (Paperback): Rob Ashton, Robert Ashton Copywriting In A Week - Be A Great Copywriter In Seven Simple Steps (Paperback)
Rob Ashton, Robert Ashton
R357 Discovery Miles 3 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Great copywriting just got easier It's strange to think that there was a time when only the privileged few could read or write. The rest of us relied on the spoken word. Storytelling was used to pass knowledge on from one generation to the next. Now, most of us are literate and use the written word to gather information and inform our decision making. Increasingly we do this online, with social media and messaging enabling rapid, spontaneous global communication. But rather than freeing us from the need for clear, effective written communication, it actually makes good communication even more important. The less we communicate face to face, the greater the opportunity for misunderstandings. Of course, all writing communicates your message to people you cannot see and may never meet. It means you can influence more widely; it also means you must take care not to make assumptions aboutyour reader, especially those who see your public postings. Successful copywriting is constructed from carefully selected words, each with a clear purpose. It is written to prompt feelings, thoughts or actions. It is clear, concise and at times comforting. It is also comprehensible, even to those not yet confident users of your language. Reading this book, and following the techniques it introduces, will make you a more effective writer. Expertise in grammar is not needed as all the necessary jargon is simply defined and, anyway, some forms of business writing deliberately ignorerules. This book is for people who want to write for results. Each of the seven chapters in Copywriting In A Week covers a different aspect: - Sunday: Focusing your message - Monday: Using layout, pictures and colour to make words memorable - Tuesday: Writing effective letters - Wednesday: Making advertising work for you - Thursday: Communicating clearly with the media - Friday: Preparing promotional print - Saturday: Composing proposals and presentation visuals

Joshua S. Hanan, Mark Hayward
R948 Discovery Miles 9 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection brings together established and emerging scholars in communication studies to examine the relationship between communication and the economy in contemporary society. Providing context for ongoing debates in the field as well as opening new areas of research, the collection brings a sense of continuity and coherency to an area of study that, until recently, has received little commentary at the level of disciplinary objectives and commitments. Through concrete case studies and theoretically informed essays, the chapters explore a range of important disciplinary topics - from the rhetoric of economics to the role of language in mediating financial crises. Written with an eye towards engaging a wide audience, this collection is a welcome addition to any course that focuses on the relationship between culture, the economy and communication including the rhetoric of economics, political economy and communication and cultural studies of the economy.

Environmental Conflict and the Media (Paperback, New edition): Libby Lester, Brett Hutchins Environmental Conflict and the Media (Paperback, New edition)
Libby Lester, Brett Hutchins
R1,012 Discovery Miles 10 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Has the hype associated with the "revolutionary" potential of the World Wide Web and digital media for environmental activism been muted by the past two decades of lived experience? What are the empirical realities of the prevailing media landscape? Using a range of related disciplinary perspectives, the contributors to this book analyze and explain the complicated relationship between environmental conflict and the media. They shine light on why media are central to historical and contemporary conceptions of power and politics in the context of local, national and global issues and outline the emerging mixture of innovation and reliance on established strategies in environmental campaigns. With cases drawn from different sections of the globe - Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, Latin America, China, Japan, the Pacific Islands, Africa - the book demonstrates how conflicts emanate from and flow across multiple sites, regions and media platforms and examines the role of the media in helping to structure collective discussion, debate and decision-making.

Forty Years of BBC Radio News - From the Swinging Sixties to the Turbulent Noughties (Hardcover, New edition): Anya Luscombe Forty Years of BBC Radio News - From the Swinging Sixties to the Turbulent Noughties (Hardcover, New edition)
Anya Luscombe
R1,317 Discovery Miles 13 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this case study of BBC Radio News, that shows how radio journalism has changed since the 1960s, the author paints a picture of the changing nature of the profession and the style of writing. She draws on interviews with practitioners, BBC official documents, style guides and output. Whilst the BBC Radio newsroom itself has changed a great deal between 1966 and 2008, the main aim of informing the public about what has happened has stayed the same. Many of the news writers are concerned about increased workloads and competition from 24-hour news outlets and its impact on the accuracy (of content and language) of BBC radio bulletins. The BBC News Style Guide charts the changes in the language since the 1960s.

New Media and Intercultural Communication - Identity, Community and Politics (Paperback, New edition): Pauline Hope Cheong,... New Media and Intercultural Communication - Identity, Community and Politics (Paperback, New edition)
Pauline Hope Cheong, Judith N. Martin, Leah Macfadyen
R908 Discovery Miles 9 080 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

There is increasing awareness of the development of newer "smart" and more interactive media, at precipitate speed, in many parts of the world. The concept of change-as opposed to continuity-is central to the increasing interest in digital media. However, this focus has not yet been matched by substantive theoretical discussions, or by extensive empirical examinations of computer-mediated communication and intercultural communication. Against such a backdrop, this volume offers theoretical insights, fresh evidence and rich applications as it assesses the nature of digital culture(s) in order to address assumptions about the present state of mediated global society(ies) and their future trajectory. Chapters explore what happens in praxis when digital media are implemented across cultures and are contested and negotiated within complex local and political conditions. The book showcases interpretative and critical research from voices with diverse backgrounds, from locations around the world. As such, this volume presents a rich and colorful tapestry that provides opportunities for comparative analyses and deepened international understandings of digital media connections, particularly in the areas of identity, community and politics.

Covering America's Courts - A Clash of Rights (Paperback, New edition): Toni Locy Covering America's Courts - A Clash of Rights (Paperback, New edition)
Toni Locy
R976 Discovery Miles 9 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

America is a nation obsessed with crime and the law. We are devoted viewers of Law and Order and CSI. When we slip and fall in the grocery store, we sue. When we cannot agree on what society should value, we turn to the courts to solve our moral conundrums. The law has permeated American life so thoroughly that knowledge of the courts and legal principles is essential for all reporters, whether they want to cover sports, business, entertainment, or politics. With a specific, thorough, and practical approach, this text is an engaging and accessible introduction to the American court system, its players, language, and impact on the public. Written by a veteran court reporter, the book provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge for covering this beat, including: * How to cover the courts and the law accurately, fairly, and with healthy skepticism; * How to find stories in the courts and how to read legal documents and make sense of them; * A discussion of the advances in technology that are changing the way stories are reported and delivered, as well as how to access electronic information maintained by the courts; * Concrete examples, provided throughout the text, of what it is like to cover courts. A valuable resource, Covering America's Courts provides students, bloggers, and citizen journalists with the foundation they need to walk into a courthouse anywhere in the country and report fairly, clearly, and ethically about criminal and civil cases.

Requirements for professional media editing have undergone enormous technological change. Editors still edit copy. But today they do much more. Mass media editors must demonstrate skills from computerised pagination to social media monitoring, from image manipulation to Search Engine Optimisation. The need for editing skills is reaching far beyond traditional journalism and into all areas of mass media, from newspapers to strategic communication. Public relations practitioners are expected to edit. Even advertising creative professionals must edit. And journalists taking on new roles as social media editors need to understand editing at the speed of digital media. This textbook aims to prepare university-level students for these expanded editing roles in an age of convergence. Thirteen authors representing more than two centuries of collective media experience examine both traditional editing roles and new editing needs to meet the demand of a changing industry. While many mass media students will not become professional editors, this textbook assumes nearly all will need competent editing knowledge to produce products of professional quality. Editing, the authors believe, remains a bedrock skill for all students who hope to be successful in the mass media.

The Columbia Guide to Social Work Writing (Hardcover, New): Warren-green, Barbara Levy Simon The Columbia Guide to Social Work Writing (Hardcover, New)
Warren-green, Barbara Levy Simon
R4,211 Discovery Miles 42 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Social work practitioners write for a variety of publications, and they are expected to show fluency in a number of related fields. Whether the target is a course instructor, scholarly journal, fellowship organization, or general news outlet, social workers must be clear, persuasive, and comprehensive in their writing, especially on provocative subjects. This first-of-its-kind guide features top scholars and educators providing a much-needed introduction to social work writing and scholarship. Foregrounding the process of social work writing, the coeditors particularly emphasize how to think about and approach one's subject in a productive manner.

The guide begins with an overview of social work writing from the 1880s to the present, and then follows with ideal strategies for academic paper writing, social work journal writing, and social work research writing. A section on applied professional writing addresses student composition in field education, writing for and about clinical practice, the effective communication of policy information to diverse audiences, program and proposal development, advocacy, and administrative writing. The concluding section focuses on specific fields of practice, including writing on child and family welfare, contemporary social issues, aging, and intervention in global contexts. Grounding their essays in systematic observations, induction and deduction, and a wealth of real-world examples, the contributors describe the conceptualization, development, and presentation of social work writing in ways that better secure its power and relevance.

Rebecca Ann Lind
R934 Discovery Miles 9 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The netted human we may call Homo Irretitus resides in a space made possible by technologies frequently referred to as new media, social media, emerging media, and Web 2.0. Traditional conceptualizations of audiences and producers are shifting so the very making of our social practices, spaces, and contexts in this brave new world of the World Wide Web, the work of Homo Irretitus in this intersectional space, must be interrogated. If we are to understand this space, we should approach it from varied vantage points. This book gathers scholars from both within and external to the core of new media studies, each of whom applies a unique theoretical perspective to the intersection of audience and production in the space enabled by emerging communications technologies. In doing so they help shed light on a variety of the tensions evident in the new digital spaces in which we create and recreate (and often produse) so much of our lives, our identities, and our selves. Focusing multiple spotlights on the intersection of audiences and production made possible by social software helps make clearer a more nuanced perspective than would otherwise be possible as well as opening up questions for further debate within the field.

Christine Hardy, Lisa Clughen
R1,732 Discovery Miles 17 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Writing in the Disciplines: Building Supportive Cultures for Student Writing in UK Higher Education examines and develops the praxis of writing at university from a sociocultural perspective. Chapters focus on key issues in writing environments from school through various disciplines at university, offering insights into the impact of such environments on student-writers and on the ways in which they construct writing differently. The book draws on empirical research, practice and the existing body of knowledge to offer practical activities developed by scholars in specific disciplinary contexts that can be used effectively with student-writers in other disciplines. The purpose is to improve the student experience and engagement with their studies; to influence debates about academic writing within the academy, both globally and locally, and to assist academics to articulate writing requirements for students in ways that address issues of inclusion, retention, and widening participation. From the first chapter to the last, this perceptive compilation details and informs us about writing in the disciplines from both a student and a disciplinary perspective.

This book describes the failure of the once powerful U.S. newspaper industry to adapt in the online era. From a historical perspective the book examines the issues and forces that shaped the industry, during the formative years of the online era through to today's wireless-based marketplace, taking into account how consumers embraced interactivity and the ensuing emergence of user-generated content. Numerous examples critically detail how newspaper companies viewed online media forms, how they deployed them, and for what purpose. The Decline of the Daily Newspaper provides insight into how the decisions made in the early years of the online era have influenced the industry's current economic condition.

Use Your Words - A Writing Guide for Mothers (Paperback): Kate Hopper, Hope Edelman Use Your Words - A Writing Guide for Mothers (Paperback)
Kate Hopper, Hope Edelman
R413 Discovery Miles 4 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

USE YOUR WORDS introduces the art of creative nonfiction to women who want to give written expression to their lives as mothers. Written by award-winning teacher and writer, Kate Hopper, this book will help women find the heart of their writing, learn to use motherhood as a lens through which to write the world, and turn their motherhood stories into art. Each chapter of USE YOUR WORDS focuses on an element of craft and contains a lecture, a published essay, and writing exercises that will serve as jumping-off points for the readers' own writing. Chapter topics include: the importance of using concrete details, an overview of creative nonfiction as a genre, character development, voice, humor, tense and writing the hard stuff, reflection and back-story, structure, revision, and publishing. The content of each lecture is aligned with the essay/poem in that chapter to help readers more easily grasp the elements of craft being discussed. Together the chapters provide a unique opportunity for mother writers to learn and grow as writers.
USE YOUR WORDS takes the approach that creative writing can be taught, and this underscores each chapter. When students learn to read like writers, to notice how a piece is put together, and to question the choices a writer makes, they begin to think like writers. When they learn to ground their writing in concrete, sensory details and begin to understand how to create believable characters and realistic dialogue, their own writing improves. USE YOUR WORDS reflects Kate's style as a teacher, guiding the reader in a straightforward, nurturing, and passionate voice. As one student noted in a class evaluation: Kate is a born writer and teacher, and her enthusiasm for essays about motherhood and for teaching the nuts and bolts of writing so that ordinary mothers have the tools to write their stories is a gift to the world. She is raising the value of motherhood in our society as she helps mothers build their confidence and strengthen their game as writers.

Theorizing Ambivalence in Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema (Hardcover, New edition): Chih-Yun Chiang Theorizing Ambivalence in Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema (Hardcover, New edition)
Chih-Yun Chiang
R1,723 Discovery Miles 17 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Theorizing Ambivalence in Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema takes a unique approach to the study of transnational cinema by examining the representation of Chinese identity in Ang Lee's films and the public discourse from various audience communities. This book focuses on his transnational films Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Lust, Caution (2007) as two case studies. Providing a systematic analysis of audience discourse from Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora, this study challenges ideological constructions of racial and ethnic identity, such as Chineseness, that are objectively defined within a static nation-state mechanism in an era of globalization. Through the study of the representation of Chineseness, this book expands the theoretical discussions on the politics of national identity and cultural syncretism represented in transnational cinema and further provides a good example of the familiar cycle of ambivalent emotion toward the West in the aftermath of postcolonialism. China and Taiwan's long history of engaging in a subordinate relationship with the West enhances the resurgence of ambivalence. The representations become a significant and predominant way to mediate one's bodily experiences, to connect and collaborate with one another, and to form and inform one's cultural identity. The analyses of these films and the audience discourse are essential to an understanding of the ways in which new media technologies impact and alter the human interactions between peoples from various cultural, social, and political contexts.
