Straw for the Fire - From the Notebooks of Theodore Roethke (Paperback): Theodore Roethke Straw for the Fire - From the Notebooks of Theodore Roethke (Paperback)
Theodore Roethke; Introduction by David Wagoner
R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"There are only two passions in art; there are love and hate--with endless modifications."--Theodore Roethke

At his death, Theodore Roethke left behind 277 spiral notebooks full of poetry fragments, aphorisms, jokes, memos, journal entries, random phrases, bits of dialogue, commentary, and fugitive miscellany. Within these notebooks, Roethke allowed his mind to rove freely, moment by moment, moving from the practical to the transcendental, from the halting to the sublime.

Fellow poet and colleague David Wagoner distilled these notebooks--twelve linear feet of bookshelf--into an energetic, wise, and rollicking collection that shows Roethke to be one of the truly phenomenal creative sources in American poetry.

From "A Psychic Janitor"

"I'm sick of fumbling, furtive, disorganized minds like bad lawyers trying to make too many points that this is an age of criticism: and these, mind you, tin-eared punks who couldn't tell a poem from an old boot if a gun were put to their heads . . ."

Writing Center Research - Extending the Conversation (Hardcover): Paula Gillespie, Alice Gillam, Lady Falls Brown, Byron Stay Writing Center Research - Extending the Conversation (Hardcover)
Paula Gillespie, Alice Gillam, Lady Falls Brown, Byron Stay
R4,507 Discovery Miles 45 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are writing centers at almost every college and university in the United States, and there is an emerging body of professional discourse, research, and writing about them. The goal of this book is to open, formalize, and further the dialogue about research in and about writing centers. The original essays in this volume, all written by writing center researchers, directly address current concerns in several ways: they encourage studies, data collection, and publication by offering detailed, reflective accounts of research; they encourage a diversity of approaches by demonstrating a range of methodologies (e.g., ethnography, longitudinal case study; rhetorical analysis, teacher research) available to both veteran and novice writing center professionals; they advance an ongoing conversation about writing center research by explicitly addressing epistemological and ethical issues. The book aims to encourage and guide other researchers, while at the same time offering new knowledge that has resulted from the studies it analyzes.

The Philosophy of Composition (Paperback): Edgar Allan Poe The Philosophy of Composition (Paperback)
Edgar Allan Poe; Contributions by Mint Editions
R109 R101 Discovery Miles 1 010 Save R8 (7%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Philosophy of Composition (1846) is an essay by Edgar Allan Poe. Recognized as a foundational figure of nineteenth century fiction, Poe has inspired generations of readers and writers with his craftsmanship and taste for tragedy and terror. His brief but meteoric career shaped the trajectory of American literature forever, forming a legacy without which science fiction, horror, and detective writing would surely be shells of themselves. Published only three years before his untimely death, the essay appeared in an April 1846 issue of Graham's American Monthly Magazine of Literature and Art, whose editor had previously made the mistake of turning down "The Raven." Both influential and controversial, Poe's essay on craft was intended as a dismissal of the myth of spontaneous art, arguing instead that a true artist depends upon attention to detail and adherence to a logical creative process. Using his own poetic masterpiece as an example, Poe claims that the writer must maintain "unity of effect" throughout the work in order to inspire the intended emotional response in the reader. Once this element has been set in place, the writer may proceed with the more technical aspects of composition, such as characters, setting, and plot. Although Poe's essay drew the ire of Anglo-American poet T. S. Eliot, it was immensely popular among Poe's Francophone audience and served as inspiration for such artists as Maurice Ravel and Charles Baudelaire. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Philosophy of Composition is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Publishing is the currency of academia. But if publishing is so important, why is it so hard to find time to write? Making Time to Write exposes how women's experiences with writing in their careers are mired in the racist, ableist, patriarchal culture of academia that was built to exclude them. Building on her experience navigating the academy to become a tenured, full professor, and her work as a writing and career coach for hundreds of academic womxn, Cathy Mazak guides readers through the work of finding and honoring writing time. In the process, readers learn to build their careers around their writing practice instead of letting writing occupy the edges. From mindset work to creating a relationship-based writing system, Making Time to Write shatters the myths around writing every day (you don't have to), accountability (it's paternalistic), and motivation (it blames the victim). More than just a how-to guide, Making Time To Write is a manifesto on the feminizing of academic culture through reshaping women's writing practices.

Community Writing - Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Paperback): Paul S. Collins Community Writing - Researching Social Issues Through Composition (Paperback)
Paul S. Collins
R1,291 Discovery Miles 12 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Community Writing: Researching Social Issues Through Composition" employs a series of assignments that guide students to research and write about issues confronting their individual communities. Students start by identifying a community to which they belong and focusing on problems in it, and then analyze possible solutions, construct arguments for them, decide which are likely to succeed, and consider how to initiate action.
This is a primary text for first-year composition courses, covering the basics of the writing process. The assignments are recursive. Short writing assignments in each chapter build up to longer papers. Each of the assignment questions is accompanied by a guide to thinking about and writing the assigned paper, followed by a short "Focus On" reading that provides a brief account of community activism, a media case study, or a notable success story. The longer papers are accompanied by in-class peer reading groups. Each successive peer reading attempts a higher level of conceptual critique. By working together throughout the semester, students create increasingly adept peer groups familiar with all stages of each other's research. The book is carefully structured, but there is plenty of "give" in it, allowing instructors to be flexible in adapting it to the needs of their students and courses.
"Community Writing: "
* is distinguished by pedagogy based on a collaborative, process-oriented, service learning approach that emphasizes media critique and field research on community issues chosen by individual students;
* answers real student questions, such as: Where do I find articles on my topic? What if evidence contradicts my hypothesis? How do I know if a source is biased?;
* is web-savvy--guides students into building their own Web sites, including a unique guide for critiquing the design and veracity of other people's websites; and
* is media-savvy--topics include media monopolies, spin control, dumbing down, misleading statistics, the Freedom of Information Act, "crackpot" authors, political rhetoric, and fallacious argumentation.

Science and Technical Writing - A Manual of Style (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Philip Rubens Science and Technical Writing - A Manual of Style (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Philip Rubens
R4,540 Discovery Miles 45 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book guides writers in the preparation of scientific and technical texts for specific audiences. Although some corporations have internal style guides, this book offers guidance for those writers who lack such resources. It also includes all aspects of document creation from audience analysis to indexing. Further, it provides resources for helping writers to make the transition from paper to electronic documents.
A new aspect of this edition is the examination of software support for various writing and graphic tasks. This edition adds new perspectives on preparing texts for translation, on indexing and on electronic referencing techniques. At the same time, it retains much of what made the first edition so popular: in depth guidance on creating graphic elements and useful page designs, using specialised symbols and mathematics in technical and scientific texts.

You know the authors' names. You recognize the title. You've probably used this book yourself. This is The Elements of Style, the classic style manual, now in a fourth edition.

The revisions to the new edition are purposely kept minimal in order to retain the book's unique tone, wit, and charm. A new Glossary of the grammatical terms used in the book provides a convenient reference for readers. The discussion of pronoun use is revised to reflect the contemporary concern with sexist language. In addition, there are numerous slight revisions in the book itself which implement this advice. A new Foreword by Roger Angell reminds readers that the advice of Strunk & White is as valuable today as when it was first offered.

This book has conveyed the principles of English style to millions of readers. Use the fourth edition of “the little book” to make a big impact with writing.

Designing Interactive Worlds With Words - Principles of Writing As Representational Composition (Paperback): David S. Kaufer,... Designing Interactive Worlds With Words - Principles of Writing As Representational Composition (Paperback)
David S. Kaufer, Brian S. Butler
R1,100 Discovery Miles 11 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

No two writing situations are exactly the same and skilled writers, like skilled painters, must develop the know-how to represent the objects of their writing as part of a flexible art. This special art of writing lies hidden between grammar--the well-formedness of sentences--and genre--the capacity of texts to perform culturally holistic communicative functions (e.g., the memo, the strategic report, the letter to the editor). Concealed between grammar and genre, this less visible art of writing is what Kaufer and Butler call "representational composition." Texts within this hidden art are best viewed not primarily as grammatical units or as genre functions, but as bearers of design elements stimulating imagistic, narrative, and information-rich worlds, and as an invitation to readers to explore and interact with them.
This volume presents a systematic study of the principles that underlie writing as representational composition. Drawing from student models derived from a studio method, the authors use each chapter to present a different aspect of what unfolds--across the course of the book--into a cumulative, interactive, and unified body of representational principles underlying the design of texts. They reveal what makes the textual representations achieved by expert writers worthwhile, and, at the same time, difficult for novice writers to reproduce. Extending the framework of their 1996 volume, "Rhetoric and the Arts" of Design, into a realm of textual design, this volume will interest students and instructors of writing, rhetoric, and information design.
