Designing Interactive Worlds With Words - Principles of Writing As Representational Composition (Paperback): David S. Kaufer,... Designing Interactive Worlds With Words - Principles of Writing As Representational Composition (Paperback)
David S. Kaufer, Brian S. Butler
R1,105 Discovery Miles 11 050 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

No two writing situations are exactly the same and skilled writers, like skilled painters, must develop the know-how to represent the objects of their writing as part of a flexible art. This special art of writing lies hidden between grammar--the well-formedness of sentences--and genre--the capacity of texts to perform culturally holistic communicative functions (e.g., the memo, the strategic report, the letter to the editor). Concealed between grammar and genre, this less visible art of writing is what Kaufer and Butler call "representational composition." Texts within this hidden art are best viewed not primarily as grammatical units or as genre functions, but as bearers of design elements stimulating imagistic, narrative, and information-rich worlds, and as an invitation to readers to explore and interact with them.
This volume presents a systematic study of the principles that underlie writing as representational composition. Drawing from student models derived from a studio method, the authors use each chapter to present a different aspect of what unfolds--across the course of the book--into a cumulative, interactive, and unified body of representational principles underlying the design of texts. They reveal what makes the textual representations achieved by expert writers worthwhile, and, at the same time, difficult for novice writers to reproduce. Extending the framework of their 1996 volume, "Rhetoric and the Arts" of Design, into a realm of textual design, this volume will interest students and instructors of writing, rhetoric, and information design.

The Art of the Footnote - The Intelligent Student's Guide to the Art and Science of Annotating Texts (Paperback, New):... The Art of the Footnote - The Intelligent Student's Guide to the Art and Science of Annotating Texts (Paperback, New)
Francis A. Burkle-Young
R1,465 Discovery Miles 14 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Art of the Footnote reacquaints students and writers with the footnote as the most effective method for presenting all of the information that is necessary to make every manuscript lucid for every reader. This book shows why footnotes are valuable, even essential, as a part of writing in the context of the scientific and historical methods of research; how easy it is to become thoroughly familiar with the various types of notes and when to employ them; and how to create footnotes which are both clear and helpful to the reader. This book will be helpful in writing undergraduate term papers to large monographs because it describes specific cases in which footnoting is appropriate and it illustrates those with examples drawn from a variety of writings.

Taking Flight With OWLs - Examining Electronic Writing Center Work (Paperback): James A Inman, Donna Sewell Taking Flight With OWLs - Examining Electronic Writing Center Work (Paperback)
James A Inman, Donna Sewell
R923 R772 Discovery Miles 7 720 Save R151 (16%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Taking Flight With OWLs" examines computer technology use in writing centers. Its purpose is to move beyond anecdotal evidence for implementing computer technology in writing centers, presenting carefully considered studies that theorize the move to computer technology and examine technology use in practice.
Writing centers occupy a dynamic position at the crossroads of computers and composition, distance education, and composition theory, pulling ideas, theories, and pedagogies from each. Their continuing evolution necessarily involves increasing use of computer technology. The move to computer technology so far has occurred so rapidly that writing center staff and administration have not yet had much time or opportunity to study how and when to infuse it into their programs. The need for this collection is evident: Writing center practitioners have long discussed their roles in relation to their supporting institutions; now they are challenged to explore--even reinvent--their roles as computer technologies transform centers and institutions. In exploring varied stages of technology-infusion through field-based accounts, this volume offers readers an important and unique resource.

The Storm Komrade Sokrates (Paperback): Hermann Sudermann The Storm Komrade Sokrates (Paperback)
Hermann Sudermann; Translated by Lauren Friesen
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Storm Komrade Sokrates centers on aging radicals who were leaders in German student revolution of 1848. The main characters are Dr. Hartmeyer, a Dentist and Dr. Marcuse, the local Rabbi. After their arrests, they were sent to the Eastern border of Germany to live a life in quasi exile. These leaders, and the other former revolutionaries, are now attempting to pass their ideals liberty, equality and justice] on to their sons, but fail miserably. Their sons are not interested the aspirations of the previous generation and, instead, one of the Dentist's sons declares his desire to gain wealth and social status, and the other, in the spirit of Bismarck's nationalism, joins the student military corps. The Rabbi's son takes the opposite point of view. He fails to see any future in a society where anti-Semitism is on the rise and is looking for a way out. When the play was produced in 1903, the author was threatened with imprisonment because the script was viewed as an attack on the monarchy and the noble class. This is the first English edition of the play.

Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis (Hardcover): Glenn D'Cruz Sarah Kane's 4.48 Psychosis (Hardcover)
Glenn D'Cruz
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Everything passes/Everything perishes/Everything palls" - 4.48 Psychosis How on earth do you award aesthetic points to a 75-minute suicide note? The question comes from a review of 4.48 Psychosis' inaugural production, the year after Sarah Kane took her own life, but this book explores the ways in which it misses the point. Kane's final play is much more than a bizarre farewell to mortality. It's a work best understood by approaching it first and foremost as theatre - as a singular component in a theatrical assemblage of bodies, voices, light and energy. The play finds an unexpectedly close fit in the established traditions of modern drama and the practices of postdramatic theatre. Glenn D'Cruz explores this theatrical angle through a number of exemplary professional and student productions with a focus on the staging of the play by the Belarus Free Theatre (2005) and Melbourne's Red Stitch Theatre (2007).

Worlds Apart - Acting and Writing in Academic and Workplace Contexts (Hardcover): Patrick Dias, Aviva Freedman, Peter Medway,... Worlds Apart - Acting and Writing in Academic and Workplace Contexts (Hardcover)
Patrick Dias, Aviva Freedman, Peter Medway, Anthony Par
R4,484 Discovery Miles 44 840 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Worlds Apart: Acting and Writing in Academic and Workplace Contexts" offers a unique examination of writing as it is applied and used in academic and workplace settings. Based on a 7-year multi-site comparative study of writing in different university courses and matched workplaces, this volume presents new perspectives on how writing functions within the activities of various disciplines: law and public administration courses and government institutions; management courses and financial institutions; social-work courses and social-work agencies; and architecture courses and architecture practice. Using detailed ethnography, the authors make comparisons between the two types of settings through an understanding of how writing is operative within the particularities of these settings.
Although the research was initially established to further understanding of the relationships between writing in academic and workplace settings, it has evolved to examining writing as it is embedded in both types of settings--where social relationships, available tools, and historical, cultural, temporal, and physical location are all implicated in complex ways in the decisions people make as writers. Readers of this volume will discover that the uniqueness of each setting makes salient different aspects of writers and writing, resulting in complex, and potentially unsettling implications for writing theory and the teaching of writing.

Writing Business - Genres, Media and Discourses (Paperback): Francesca Bargiela-Chiappini, Catherine Nickerson Writing Business - Genres, Media and Discourses (Paperback)
Francesca Bargiela-Chiappini, Catherine Nickerson
R1,798 Discovery Miles 17 980 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Writing Business: Genres, Media and Discourses" offers an analysis of the genres and functions of written discourse in the business context, involving a variety of modes of communication. The evolution of new forms of writing is a key focus of this collection and is only partly attributable to the ever increasing application of technology at work. Alongside machine-mediated texts such as electronic mail and computer-generated correspondence, the contextualised analyses of both traditional genres such as facsimiles and direct mailing, and of lesser studied texts such as invitations for bids, contracts, business magazines and ceremonial speeches, reveal a rich complexity in the forms of communication evolved by organisations and the individuals who work within them, in response to the demands of the social, organisational and cultural contexts in which they operate. This rich textual variation is matched by a discussion of a range of methodological approaches to the development of business writing skills, including rhetorical analysis, organisational communication analysis, social constructionism, genre analysis and survey and experimental methods. Using authentic data and benefiting from a fresh, interdisciplinary approach, the volume will be of interest to students and researchers of business communication, Language for Specific Purposes (LSP), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and sociolinguistics.

Teaching Academic Literacy - The Uses of Teacher-research in Developing A Writing Program (Paperback, New): Katherine L. Weese,... Teaching Academic Literacy - The Uses of Teacher-research in Developing A Writing Program (Paperback, New)
Katherine L. Weese, Stephen L. Fox, Stuart Greene
R927 R867 Discovery Miles 8 670 Save R60 (6%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Teaching Academic Literacy provides a unique outlook on a first-year writing program's evolution by bringing together a group of related essays that analyze, from various angles, how theoretical concepts about writing actually operate in real students' writing. Based on the beginning writing program developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a course that asks students to consider what it means to be a literate member of a community, the essays in the collection explore how students become (and what impedes their progress in becoming) authorities in writing situations. Key features of this volume include: * demonstrations of how research into specific teaching problems (e.g., the problem of authority in beginning writers' work) can be conducted by examining student work through a variety of lenses such as task interpretation, collaboration, and conference, so that instructors can understand what factors influence students, and can then use what they have learned to reshape their teaching practices; * adaptability of theory and research to develop a course that engages basic writers with challenging ideas; * a model of how a large writing program can be administered, particularly in regards to the integration of research and curriculum development; and * integration of literary and composition theories.

Living Rhetoric and Composition - Stories of the Discipline (Hardcover): Duane H. Roen, Stuart C. Brown, Theresa Jarnagi Enos Living Rhetoric and Composition - Stories of the Discipline (Hardcover)
Duane H. Roen, Stuart C. Brown, Theresa Jarnagi Enos
R2,891 Discovery Miles 28 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This collection--of the stories of scholars who have found a lifelong commitment to the teaching of writing--includes the professional histories of 19 rhetoricians and compositionists who explain how they came to fall in love with the written word and with teaching. Their stories are filled with personal anecdotes--some funny, some touching, some mundane. All of the stories are fascinating because they demonstrate how scholars' personal and professional lives intertwine.
These stories also help to situate the scholars, their work, and, importantly, the development of the profession. They reveal how the field of rhetoric and composition is shaped by the confluences of various disciplines such as literary studies, creative writing, philosophy, and education. Of note are the disparate paths and backgrounds that people have taken to achieve their professional stature. The narratives, however, are most revelatory in describing the forging of a discipline as it reasserts its value within the academy and to the students it serves.
Arranged in a loose chronological order, the essays reflect the progression of rhetoric and composition studies from the ad hoc scrambling of post-World War II teachers into a vibrant and growing discipline with more than 70 doctoral programs producing specialized scholars, researchers, and teachers of writing. The chapter authors represent the variety of camps that now comprise the diverse discipline of rhetoric and composition. Whether historian, researcher, theorist, or practitioner, however, what these contributors share in common is being teachers.
The narratives are collected from senior members of the profession so that their stories can be preserved for future generations of scholars and teachers in the field. This collection is not only a record of their contributions and some of the benchmarks in the field, but an opportunity for the writers to provide us with their reflections and retrospection. Keep in mind as you read their stories that they are narratives for the most part, and as such, are transient. They take us to a certain point in the writer's life, but stop while the writer goes on. Still, they provide an orientation to the profession while revealing the scholar behind the scholarship.

Journalism and PR - Unpacking 'Spin', Stereotypes, and Media Myths (Hardcover, New edition): Jim MacNamara Journalism and PR - Unpacking 'Spin', Stereotypes, and Media Myths (Hardcover, New edition)
Jim MacNamara
R3,564 Discovery Miles 35 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The interrelationship between journalism and public relations (PR) is one of the most contentious in the field of media studies. Numerous studies have shown that 50-80 per cent of the content of mass media is significantly shaped by PR. But many editors, journalists, and PR practitioners engage in a 'discourse of denial', maintaining what critics call the dirty secret of journalism - and PR. Media practitioners also engage in an accusatory 'discourse of spin' and a 'discourse of victimhood'. On the other hand, PR practitioners say they help provide a voice for organizations, including those ignored by the media. Meanwhile, the growth of social media is providing new opportunities for governments, corporations, and organizations to create content and even their own media, increasing the channels and reach of PR. This book reviews 100 years of research into the interrelationship between journalism and PR and, based on in-depth interviews with senior editors, journalists, and PR practitioners in several countries, presents new insights into the methods and extent of PR influence, its implications, and the need for transparency and change, making it a must-read for researchers and students in media studies, journalism, public relations, politics, sociology, and cultural studies.

Vale's Technique of Screen and Television Writing is an updated and expanded edition of a valuable guide to writing for film and television. Mr. Vale takes the aspiring writer through every phase of a film's development, from the original concept to the final shooting script. Teachers of the craft as well as writers and directors have acclaimed it as one of the best books ever written on how to write a screenplay.
This book combines practical advice for the aspiring or established writer with a lucid overview of the unique features of this most contemporary art form, distinguishing film and video from other media and other kinds of storytelling. It teaches the reader to think in terms of the camera and gives practical advice on the realities of filmmaking. At the same time, Vale, who began his own career as a scriptwriter for the great French director Jean Renoir, provides a solid grounding in the history of drama from the Classical Greek theater through the great cinematic works of the twentieth century. Both philosophical and pragmatic, this is a very readable book for students and active professionals who want to improve their writing skills, and for film enthusiasts interested in knowing more about what they see on the screen.
Mr. Vale is that rare combination, a practitioner of great experience who can offer a lucid explanation of his craft.
Eugene Vale was born in Switzerland and began his career in France in the 1930s. He was an award-winning novelist, film and TV scriptwriter and teacher, whose works include the bestselling novel The Thirteenth Apostle and the scripts for Francis of Assisi, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and The Second Face.
