The study sets out to identify the processes and dynamics
responsible for the transformation of Switzerland from a country in
which in 1700 only a minority could read and write into a nation of
fully literate citizens by 1900. The literacy standard that, as of
1760, insisted that every adult should be able to read and write
fell on fruitful soil, arriving at a time when Swiss society had
already been sensitized to the importance of written correspondence
and book-keeping.
