This survey-mainly of books that are available in English-opens with 'The Long Gestation of the Novel, 1837-1937', from Aubert de Gaspe's Les Anciens Canadiens / Canadians of Old to Felix-Antoine Savard's Menaud, maitre-draveur / Master of the River. 'The Modern Novel, 1938-1959' deals with the emergence of urban social realism (Gabrielle Roy, Roger Lemelin), its roots in the writings of Ringuet and Germaine Guevremont, and the existentialism of Andre Langevin. 'The Sixties' treats the effects of the Quiet Revolution on the novel, and discusses major works by Yves Theriault, Hubert Aquin, Gerard Bessette, Marie-Claire Blais, Roch Carrier, Rejean Ducharme, Jacques Ferron, Jacques Godbout and Claire Martin among others. Concluding with a brief discussion of translation, and bibliographies of novels discussed and select criticism, this is an illuminating and readable introduction to a rich body of literature.
