Bishop Richard Fox of Winchester (1448-1528) was an important early
modern English prelate whose tireless service to his church, to his
king and to humanist studies single him out as one of the great
shapers of the Tudor age. This book examines his life and career,
taking as its theme the ""corporate"" nature of the worlds in which
Fox lived and worked: the corpus Christi mysticum of the late
medieval church and the emerging ""body politic"" of the early
Tudor monarchy. His service to these institutions, along with his
foundation of the humanist Corpus Christi College at Oxford, linked
him to ""bodies most politic and holy"" during a transitional
period in English history. Also responsible for launching the
careers of other more famous prelates and statesmen, such as Thomas
Wolsey and John Fisher, Fox deserves to take his place among the
great luminaries of the Tudor age.
