In 1880, eight Inuit men, women, and children from Labrador were
hired to be exhibited in European Zoos as part of so-called
Volkerschauen (peoples' exhibitions). Within five months of their
arrival, they had all died of smallpox. One of the group, Abraham
Ulrikab, a baptized member of the Moravian Mission at Hebron,
Labrador, kept a short diary of his experiences, which was sent
back to Hebron after his death. His original in Inuktitut is lost,
but a handwritten Moravian translation into German survived. This
moving document of culture shock, isolation, homesickness and
institutional racism has now been translated into English by
Hartmut Lutz and his students at the University of Greifswald in
Germany, and is at the heart of this volume. Abraham's diary is
complemented by historical newspaper articles reporting on the
exhibitions, a contemporary ethnographic description by a German
physician, Abraham's letters to his Moravian brethren in Hebron (as
well as their replies), contemporary illustrations, and photographs
by Hans-Ludwig Blolm. A preface by Inuit artist and author Alootook
Ipellie and an introduction by Lutz comment on and complement the
textual documents, which present a sad and important story of early
Indigenous Canadian-European relations.
