Human activity is producing changes to our environment on an
unprecedented global scale. Learning and understanding how plants
respond to these changes will be crucial to our ability to feed
human populations in the future. This book gives a broad coverage
of the ways in which plants respond and adjust to environmental
variables, and identifies unifying concepts spanning different
levels of plant organization from the subcellular to the whole
natural plant community. The 18 chapters were given as invited
contributions at a meeting sponsored by the Rank Prize Funds in
October 1992. The book will be of great interest and use to all
plant scientists and upper level students concerned with the impact
of the environment on plants.
