This third volume in the "Progress in Hypertension" series is
dedicated to the memory of Professor Kozo Okamoto the creator of
spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), stroke-prone spontaneously
hypertensive rats (SHRSP) and malignant stroke-prone spontaneously
hypertensive rats (M-SHRSP). The papers in this volume deal with
pathophysiology and pharmacology of SHR. The contributions describe
new trends in SHR research from haemodynamic characteristics to
immunological views. The emphasis is placed on the development of
transgenic rats and the use of tissue culture studies to elaborate
SHR characteristics. The possible use of SHRSP as a model of
cerebrovascular dementia can also serve as a novel concept to
facilitate the study of vascular dementia. The role of excitatory
amino SHR are also covered in this book.
