This volume takes an important step towards developing global
perspectives on the history of national history writing. With
chapters spanning all five continents, contributors address a
common framework which has been developed by the editor as part and
parcel of his five-year European Science Foundation-funded project
on the writing of national histories in Europe. Here the question
is how and in which way European national histories may be compared
to non-European national histories. In addition the volume pursues
the question of the many influences, transfers, adaptations and
interrelations between national historiographies in different parts
of the globe.
