R2,012 Discovery Miles 20 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The globalization and the associated development of truly global product and financial markets has led to a severe change of the corporate environment. New products and markets now evolve faster than ever, and new competitors, technologies and substitution products impose additional competition. These developments have led to an increasingly uncertain and dynamic competitive situation. This book discusses the impact of this changing environment on the role and responsibilities of the CFO. To manage the consequences of this changing environment, the CFO requires a more holistic view that integrates business and financial decisions. By mastering this new role, he becomes vital for a firm's value creation. The book details this management approaches and gives examples how this new "strategic" CFO-role be implemented

R2,759 Discovery Miles 27 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since 1990 the German Research Society (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) has been funding PhD courses (Graduiertenkollegs) at selected universi- ties in the Federal Republic of Germany. TU Berlin has been one of the first universities joining that new funding program of DFG. The PhD courses have been funded over aperiod of 9 years. The grant for the nine years sums up to approximately 5 million DM. Our Grnduiertenkolleg on Communication-based Systems has been assigned to the Computer Science Department of TU Berlin although it is a joined effort of all three universities in Berlin, Technische Uni- versitat (TU), Freie Universitat (FU), and Humboldt Universitat (HU). The Graduiertenkolleg has been started its program in October 1991. The professors responsible for the program are: Hartmut Ehrig (TU), Gunter Hommel (TU), Stefan Jahnichen (TU), Peter Lohr (FU), Miroslaw Malek (RU), Peter Pep- per (TU), Radu Popescu-Zeletin (TU), Herbert Weber (TU), and Adam Wolisz (TU). The Graduiertenkolleg is a PhD program for highly qualified persons in the field of computer science. Twenty scholarships have been granted to fellows of the Graduiertenkolleg for a maximal period of three years. During this time the fellows take part in a selected educational program and work on their PhD thesis.

Computational Kinematics (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): J. Angeles, Gunter Hommel, Peter Kovacs Computational Kinematics (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
J. Angeles, Gunter Hommel, Peter Kovacs
R4,181 Discovery Miles 41 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of this book is to provide an account of the state of the art in Com putational Kinematics. We understand here under this term, that branch of kinematics research involving intensive computations not only of the numer ical type, but also of a symbolic nature. Research in kinematics over the last decade has been remarkably ori ented towards the computational aspects of kinematics problems. In fact, this work has been prompted by the need to answer fundamental question s such as the number of solutions, whether real or complex, that a given problem can admit. Problems of this kind occur frequently in the analysis and synthesis of kinematic chains, when finite displacements are considered. The associated models, that are derived from kinematic relations known as closure equations, lead to systems of nonlinear algebraic equations in the variables or parameters sought. What we mean by algebraic equations here is equations whereby the unknowns are numbers, as opposed to differen tial equations, where the unknowns are functions. The algebraic equations at hand can take on the form of multivariate polynomials or may involve trigonometric functions of unknown angles. Because of the nonlinear nature of the underlying kinematic models, purely numerical methods turn out to be too restrictive, for they involve iterative procedures whose convergence cannot, in general, be guaranteed. Additionally, when these methods converge, they do so to only isolated solu tions, and the question as to the number of solutions to expect still remains."

The International Workshop on "Human Interaction with Machines" is the sixth in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universitat Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. The series of workshops started in 1990 with the International Workshop on "Artificial Intelligence" and was continued with the International Workshop on "Advanced Software Technology" in 1994. Both workshops have been hosted by Shanghai Jiaotong University. In 1998 the third wo- shop took place in Berlin. This International Workshop on "Communi- tion Based Systems" was essentially based on results from the Graduiertenkolleg on Communication Based Systems that was funded by the German Research Society (DFG) from 1991 to 2000. The fourth Int- national Workshop on "Robotics and its Applications" was held in Sha- hai in 2000. The fifth International Workshop on "The Internet Challenge: Technology and Applications" was hosted by TU Berlin in 2002."

The International Workshop on Embedded Systems -- Modeling, Technology, and Applications is the seventh in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universitat Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to present research results to an international community. Successfully realizing Embedded Systems requires methods and tools from different disciplines. Formal specification techniques not only for the embedded system itself but also for the device and environment that is controlled by the embedded system are used for functional and non-functional properties (e.g. performance, real-time behavior). Formal models allow analyzing and optimizing those properties. Different methods and tools are used to design the required behavior of the system and finally to implement and test the system."

Conversations and Soliloquies - A Window on South Africa (Hardcover): Maurice Hommel Conversations and Soliloquies - A Window on South Africa (Hardcover)
Maurice Hommel
R833 R737 Discovery Miles 7 370 Save R96 (12%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the midst of apartheid in South Africa, journalist Maurice Hommel documented the cruel injustices and tensions running rampant within the country. What he saw forever impacted his life.

"Conversations and Soliloquies" presents a collection of Hommel's essays and articles from the last fifty-five years, documenting and analyzing South African history during and after apartheid. Over time, the essays illuminate, in sometimes graphic detail, the anti-apartheid struggle that defined South Africa for decades.

Beginning with the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960, Hommel delves into the bloody history of apartheid and traces how it pervaded every segment of society. His interviews with prominent South Africans, including Desmond Tutu and Neville Alexander, offer intimate glimpses into the thoughts of those working for change. In addition, stark photographs capture the emotions of the time.

In its breadth of historical perspectives, this collection is a significant contribution to an understanding of South Africa's evolution to a nonracial, nonsexist, democratic country. Although lingering prejudices and smoldering resentments remain, Hommel carries an unshakable optimism of South Africa's enormous potential. "Conversations and Soliloquies" captures that hope.

Common Mechanisms in Perception and Action - Attention and Performance Volume XIX (Hardcover): Wolfgang Prinz, Bernhard Hommel Common Mechanisms in Perception and Action - Attention and Performance Volume XIX (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Prinz, Bernhard Hommel
R3,670 Discovery Miles 36 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The latest volume in the critically acclaimed and highly influential Attention and Performance series focuses on a subject at the heart of psychological research into human performance - the interplay between perception and action. What are the mechanisms that translate the information we receive via our senses into physical actions? How do the mechanisms responsible for producing a response from a given stimulus operate? Recently, new perspectives have emerged, drawing on studies from neuroscience and neurophysiology. Within this volume, state of the art and cutting edge research from leading scientists in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience is presented describing the approaches being taken to understanding the mechanisms that allow us to negotiate and respond to the world around us.

Nomadic Cultures in the Mega-Structure of the Eurasian World (Paperback): Evgenij N. Chernykh Nomadic Cultures in the Mega-Structure of the Eurasian World (Paperback)
Evgenij N. Chernykh; Edited by Irina Savinetskaya, Peter N Hommel
R1,843 Discovery Miles 18 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Two major dividing lines have formed the megastructure of Eurasia, determining the historical epochs of the continent's peoples. The first, vertical (longitudinal) line has separated East and West since the Paleolithic Age. The East was dominated by Mongol peoples speaking Sino -Tibetan, Manchu-Tungus, and Altaic languages. The Caucasoid peoples of the West spoke mostly Indo-European, Semite, and Finno-Ugric languages. The second line divided the continent horizontally (by latitude) into North and South. This division was closely connected with the Eurasian Steppe Belt. To the north of it lay the world of hunter-gatherers and fishermen. To the south, settled agriculture was dominant. The Steppe Belt itself was the domain of pastoralists, the nomadic and semi-nomadic herders. These lines converged at the entrance to the Great Silk Road. With the swift development of horse domestication and horseback riding, the nomads moved-from the Early Metal Age (500-400 BCE) to Genghis Khan's and the Genghisid's Great Empire (1200-1400 CE)-to the forefront of Eurasian history as their world became increasingly involved in dramatic and sometimes tragic relationships with their southern neighbors. This book focuses on the tangle of problems in these nomadic peoples' history.

The International Workshop on "The Internet Challenge: Technology and Applications" is the fifth in a successful series of workshops that were established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Technische Universitat Berlin. The goal of those workshops is to bring together researchers from both universities in order to exchange research results achieved in common projects of the two partner universities or to present interesting new work that might lead to new cooperation. The series of workshops started in 1990 with the "International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence" and was continued with the "International Workshop on Advanced Software Technology" in 1994. The Making of Europe's Critical Infrastructure - Common Connections and Shared Vulnerabilities (Hardcover): P. Hoegselius,... The Making of Europe's Critical Infrastructure - Common Connections and Shared Vulnerabilities (Hardcover)
P. Hoegselius, A Hommels, A. Kaijser, E. Van Der Vleuten, Erik Van Der Vleuten
R1,976 Discovery Miles 19 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Europe's critical infrastructure is a key concern to policymakers, NGOs, companies, and citizens today. A 2006 power line failure in northern Germany closed lights in Portugal in a matter of seconds. Several Russian-Ukrainian gas crises shocked politicians, entrepreneurs, and citizens thousands of kilometers away in Germany, France, and Italy. This book argues that present-day infrastructure vulnerabilities resulted from choices of infrastructure builders in the past. It inquires which, and whose, vulnerabilities they perceived, negotiated, prioritized, and inscribed in Europe's critical infrastructure. It does not take 'Europe' for granted, but actively investigates which countries and peoples were historically connected in joint interdependency, and why. In short, this collection unravels the simultaneous historical shaping of infrastructure, common vulnerabilities, and Europe.

Bernhard Hommel, Stephen B.R.E. Brown, Dieter Nattkemper
R3,651 Discovery Miles 36 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction into the areas of human action planning and action control. It discusses the basic theoretical issues and questions in understanding the planning and control of human goal-directed action. The authors begin by presenting an integrative theoretical framework and the neurobiological foundations of action planning and execution. Subsequent chapters discuss how goals are represented and how they guide action control; how perception and action interact; how simple and complex actions are selected and planned; how multitasking works; and how actions are monitored. Topics of interest include: stimulus-triggered selections, rule-based selections, intentional action selections, and intuitive decision-making. Human Action Control is a must-have resource for advanced undergraduates, graduates, and doctorate students in cognitive psychology and related areas, such as the cognitive neurosciences, and developmental and social psychology.

Andreas. B Eder, Bernhard Hommel
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Influential theories on affect and emotion propose a fundamental differentiation between emotion and cognition, and research paradigms designed to test them focus on differences rather than similarities between affective and cognitive processes. This research orientation is increasingly challenged by the widespread and successful use of cognitive research paradigms in the study of affect and emotion - a challenge with far-reaching implications. Where and on what basis do theorists draw the line between cognition and emotion, and when is it useful to do so? Should researchers build more global, integrative models of cognition and emotion, or should they rely on local, content-specific models that draw attention to a differentiation between affective and cognitive processes? This special issue compiles different viewpoints on fundamental issues in the relationship between affect and cognition.

R2,835 Discovery Miles 28 350 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dealing with all aspects of risk management that have undergone significant innovation in recent years, this book aims at being a reference work in its field. Different to other books on the topic, it addresses the challenges and opportunities facing the different risk management types in banks, insurance companies, and the corporate sector. Due to the rising volatility in the financial markets as well as political and operational risks affecting the business sector in general, capital adequacy rules are equally important for non-financial companies. For the banking sector, the book emphasizes the modifications implied by the Basel II proposal. The volume has been written for academics as well as practitioners, in particular finance specialists. It is unique in bringing together such a wide array of experts and correspondingly offers a complete coverage of recent developments in risk management.
