First published in 1977, Clergy, Ministers and Priests provides the first sociological analysis to have been undertaken in this country of the differences in value orientation between clergy in the Church of England, ministers in the Methodist Church and priests in the Roman Catholic Church. Five important areas of values are covered: theological outlook, views on the role of the religious functionary, attitudes towards ecumenism, views on institutional reform, and ideas about the organisational nature of the church. Going beyond the description, the authors examine various explanations for the existence of these differences. First, they consider the interplay of the values themselves. A second approach deals with structural factors related to the denomination such as the social role played by the clergy. Finally, non-denominational social experience is considered, including class origins and the educational background of the clergy. This study will be of interest to scholars and researchers of sociology of religion, religion, and Christianity.
In this textbook Alan Bryman provides a detailed and critical examination of the literature on leadership in organizations, giving special recognition to the needs of students of organizational behaviour and the social psychology of organizations. After an examination of the complexity of the concept of leadership, the author describes the major approaches to the analysis of leadership in organizations, including: the idea that effective leaders have special traits; the various attempts to examine leader behaviour; normative approaches to the study of leadership; and the various theories which emphasize the importance of recognizing situational differences in understanding leadership effectiveness.
This textbook provides first-hand, inside accounts of the process of doing research in organizations. It is intended both for students of research methods in sociology and social psychology, and for students of organization studies, organizational behaviour and management. The contributors tackle such problems as: gaining access to organizations, 'getting on' in organizations, quantitative and qualitative styles of investigation, the use of historical materials, the effects of resources on the context of research, the part played by political factors in organizational research, the relevance of grounded theory and conducting research within a cross-cultural framework.

This work provides an overview of the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author examines topics such as Walt Disney's life and how his biography has been constructed, the Disney Company in the years after his death and various writings about the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks such as: whether they are harbringers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks links with the presentation of Disney's biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic.
Social scientists often dismiss the media as untrustworthy and irresponsible and the media frequently regard social scientists as incapable of giving a straight answer. The contributors to this volume complain of having been misrepresented, misquoted and edited out of all recognition. That this clash of cultures should occur is not surprising given the different priorities and perspectives of the social sciences and the media. This work examines these issues from the viewpoint of the media and social scientists who have had extensive media contact. The academics contributing to this book have conducted research on a diverse range of topics including: education, stress, football hooliganism, intelligence, risk factors for illness, drug use, performance appraisal in universities, politics, sex, religion, pornography, female sexuality, terrorism, youth culture and media studies. There are also chapters from well-known media practitioners, from radio, the television and newspapers. Based on the contributions, the editors offer practical suggestions for social scientists to help them work more effectively with the media and thereby reach a wider audience.

First published in 2004. 'Bryman has given researchers who study organizations and people in organizations just what they need, a source book on how such research is done, written for them on them by one of them. There are research methods books aplenty, but not for this particular field. Bryman's compendious knowledge enables him to review every conceivable method, illustrating and assessing each with copious material from actual published research. Hence the book gives a reader an enhancd knowledge of research and researchers as well as of methods. It is both a rich source for newcomers and a thorough reference work for old hands.' - David J Hicks, Professor of International Management and Organization, University of Bradford. Alan Bryman takes numerous examples of research, principally from North America and the United Kingdom, to illustrate his themes. Each research design and method (both quantitative and qualitative) is systematically appraised in terms of its uses and limitations. Experiments, surveys, participant observation and interviewing - and more particular problems such as measurement, levels of analysis and the relevance of epistemological issues - are thoroughly discussed.
This latest edition has been fully updated to accommodate the needs of users of SPSS Releases 17, 18 and 19 while still being applicable to users of SPSS Releases 15 and 16. The simple, non-technical approach to quantitative data analysis enables the reader to quickly become familiar with SPSS and with the tests available to them. No previous experience of statistics or computing is required as this book provides a step-by-step guide to statistical techniques, including: Non-parametric tests Correlation Simple and multiple regression Analysis of variance and covariance Factor analysis. This book comes equipped with a comprehensive range of exercises for further practice, and it covers key issues such as sampling, statistical inference, conceptualization and measurement and selection of appropriate tests. The authors have also included a helpful glossary of key terms. The data sets used in Quantitative Data Analysis with IBM SPSS 17, 18 and 19 are available online at http://www.routledgetextbooks.com/textbooks/_author/bryman-9780415579193/; in addition, a set of multiple-choice questions and a chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint lecture course are available free of charge to lecturers who adopt the book.
Quantitative data analysis is now a compulsory component of most degree courses in the social sciences and students are increasingly reliant on computers for the analysis of data. Quantitative Data Analysis with Minitab explains statistical tests for Mac users using the same formulae free, non-technical approach as the very successful SPPS version. Students will learn a wide range of quantitative data analysis techniques and become familiar with how these techniques can be implemented through the latest version of Minitab. Techniques covered include univariate analysis (with frequency table, dispersion and histograms), bivariate (with contingency tables correlation, analysis of varience and non-parametric tests) and multivariate analysis (with multiple regression, path analysis, covarience and factor analysis). In addition the book covers issues such as sampling, statistical significance, conceptualization and measurement and the selection of appropriate tests. Each chapter concludes with a set of exercises. Social science students will be interested in this integrated, non-mathematical introduction to quantitative data anlysis and the Minitab package.

This book focuses upon the debate about quantitative and qualitative research which took root in the 1960s, although many of the central themes go back centuries. The basic terms of the debate have been felt in many of the disciplines which make up the social sciences, especially sociology, social psychology, education research, organization studies, and evaluation research.

Mixed methods research has become one of the major areas of growth in social research methodology in the last 10 years. The divisions between quantitative and qualitative research have increasingly given way to imaginative ways of combining the two approaches and a growing acceptance of adopting a multi-method approach. Much of the literature on mixed-methods research is highly dispersed in a wide variety of journals and other publications. A great deal of it is not well known and quite a lot of it is inaccessible. Alan Bryman, widely recognized as an authority on the subject, brings together the key articles in this important field to form a definitive resource collection. Volume I outlinines the epistemological and ontological issues relating to the debate about quantitative and qualitative research and how these have an impact on the possibility of mixing methods. Volume II is concerned with the combination of different methods within quantitative research and within qualitative research. Volume III addresses the methodological issues involved in combining quantitative and qualitative research - the different ways in which mixed-methods research is actually accomplished. Volume IV continues the kinds of material used in Volume III but will also include some examples of combining quantitative and qualitative research. |
