This timely resource offers fresh research on companies' use of social media platforms-from Twitter and Facebook to LinkedIn and other career sites-to find and hire personnel. Its balanced approach explains why and how social media are commonly used in both employee recruitment and selection, exploring relevant theoretical constructs and practical considerations about their appropriateness and validity. Contributors clarify a confusing cyberscape with recommendations and best practices, legal and ethical issues, pitfalls and problems, and possibilities for standardization. And the book's insights on emerging and anticipated developments will keep the reader abreast of the field as it evolves. Included in the coverage: * Social media as a personnel selection and hiring resource: Reservations and recommendations. * Game-thinking within social media to recruit and select job candidates. * Social media, big data, and employment decisions. * The use of social media by BRIC nations during the selection process. * Legal concerns when considering social media data in selection. * Online exclusion: Biases that may arise when using social media in talent acquisition. * Is John Smith really John Smith? Misrepresentations and misattributions of candidates using social media and social networking sites. Social Media in Employee Selection and Recruitment is a bedrock reference for industrial/organizational psychology and human resources academics currently or planning to conduct research in this area, as well as for academic libraries. Practitioners considering consulting social media as part of human resource planning or selection system design will find it a straight-talking guide to staying competitive.
Allergy is developing into one of the most prevalent diseases affecting individuals in the very early days of life. While the cause of this epidemic is still unclear, it appears that the westernized life style is playing an important role, which includes nutrition, possibly air pollution as well as hygienic conditions. While epidemiologic studies were able to narrow down these factors, basic research discovered novel mechanisms that control the organisms tolerance against allergens. Particularly interesting is the role of microorganisms that colonize or infect a host and thereby cause damage and immunological activation followed by sensitization or exacerbation of already existing sensitizations. However at the same time microbial activation of the immune system can help to generate a protective immunity that prevents allergen sensitization. The current book is collecting these evidences and connects epidemiologic and clinical mechanistic knowledge. Only the synthesis of this knowledge will help to find solutions to the ongoing allergy epidemic in terms of public health activities, prevention and therapy.
Agent-based modelling on a computer appears to have a special role to play in the development of social science. It offers a means of discovering general and applicable social theory, and grounding it in precise assumptions and derivations, whilst addressing those elements of individual cognition that are central to human society. However, there are important questions to be asked and difficulties to overcome in achieving this potential. What differentiates agent-based modelling from traditional computer modelling? Which model types should be used under which circumstances? If it is appropriate to use a complex model, how can it be validated? Is social simulation research to adopt a realist epistemology, or can it operate within a social constructionist framework? What are the sociological concepts of norms and norm processing that could either be used for planned implementation or for identifying equivalents of social norms among co-operative agents? Can sustainability be achieved more easily in a hierarchical agent society than in a society of isolated agents? What examples are there of hybrid forms of interaction between humans and artificial agents? These are some of the sociological questions that are addressed.
Carl Schmidt's catalogue of Poulenc's works lists and describes the musical works of one of France's most important 20th-century composers. The book reveals a wealth of information about a composer whose music is heard constantly in concert halls and on record around the world, and adds the names of a small group of works to his musical canon for the first time.
This book is concerned with the methods by which the dynamics of endogenous economic growth systems may be analysed and numerically computed, and with the validation of such numerical computations through qualitative economic reasoning. The methods comprise linearisation, phase-space analysis and a variety of numerical integration techniques. In particular, the book provides a detailed examination of the transitional dynamics (the movement from some current state towards a steady-state equilibrium) of the influential endogenous growth model from Paul Romer's 1990 Journal of Political Economy article: "Endogenous Technological Change."
It all begins with Kalmann in hot water. He’s at the FBI Headquarters in Washington, arrested during the Jan 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol Building. All he wanted was to visit his American father in the US for the Christmas holidays – but his dad takes him (and a group of MAGA friends) to the protests in Washington to “regain the house which is ours”. He is promptly arrested during the riots. Thanks to sympathetic FBI agent Dakota Leen, he’s soon on a plane back to Iceland. But not before Dakota informs him that his recently deceased grandfather was on an FBI list of suspected Russian spies working in Iceland during the Cold War. Back home, Kalmann begins to suspect that his grandfather’s death from “heart failure” was a murder. His maverick investigation uncovers another assassination and takes him to the site of a US radar station abandoned in the 1970s. So, there are now two deaths to be solved and the threat of more to come. Much to do for our unlikely amateur detective who somehow never loses heart.
This book will satisfy the demand among college majors in Finance and Financial Engineering, and mathematically-versed practitioners for description of both the classical approaches to equity investing and new investment strategies scattered in the periodic literature. Besides the major portfolio management theories (mean variance theory, CAPM, and APT), the book addresses several important topics: portfolio diversification, optimal ESG portfolios, factor models (smart betas), robust portfolio optimization, risk-based asset allocation, statistical arbitrage, alternative data based investing, back-testing of trading strategies, modern market microstructure, algorithmic trading, and agent-based modeling of financial markets. The book also includes the basic elements of time series analysis in the Appendix for self-contained presentation of the material. While the book covers technical concepts and models, it will not overburden the reader with math beyond the Finance undergraduates' curriculum.

A History of the Handel Choir of Baltimore (1935-2013): Music, Spread Thy Voice Around chronicles the history of one of America's longstanding volunteer choral organizations, one that has followed in the footsteps of venerable ensembles such as the Handel and Haydn Society (Boston), the Bethlehem Bach Choir, and the Handel Society of Dartmouth College. It begins by considering music in the city of Baltimore, and establishing the reasons surrounding the choir's formation. Substantial coverage is given to the influence of Katharine M. Lucke, one of Baltimore's grandes dames-as a composer, mover, and shaker-and a vital force in Baltimore's National Music Week from her position on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Subsequently the book focuses on the contributions of each of the ten conductor/music directors, the vicissitudes of funding a volunteer choir, the choir's contributions to music education in the greater Baltimore metropolitan area, and the choir's repertoire. The book contains extensive appendices describing the choir's repertoire, its presidents, and its unbroken string of Messiah performances. Throughout more than seventy-five years, the Handel Choir of Baltimore has remained true to its original charter as an amateur choral organization that aspires to the highest standards of artistic excellence. A History of the Handel Choir of Baltimore is an invaluable resource to those interested in choral music studies, the running of an amateur, volunteer choir, and other disciplines of music studies.

From the author. Self-publishing writers should not have a problem with self-reviewing their books. There is a risk, of course, that this may end up with "self-reading." But let me try, anyway. This is a memoir of a former Soviet physicist of Jewish descent who came to the USA as a tourist and became a financial quant. It's mostly an emigre story. It has some sad pages about my relatives who fled from Nazi Germany and landed in Gulag. My descendants won't find their roots on Ancestry.com; I've written this piece for them, too. This book is also a tale of a man who wanted to be a scientist and became one. Finally, there is a gallery of my failed relationships with a hopefully happy ending (I keep fingers crossed). "Papa, your life is your work and yet you write mostly about women," my daughter said. There is some truth in her words and I put them in the epigraph. "You appear to have had an inherently interesting life," one independent publisher acknowledged. She rejected my book anyway. "Biographies don't sell unless you're a celebrity," another publisher informed me. Maybe; I'm not in the marketing business (you already know that). I've written this book after I started having flashes of my memory that didn't go away. I put them onto paper but they are still with me. Thanks for reading. Did the ancient Israelites perform rituals expressive of the belief in the supernaturalbeneficent power of the dead? Contrary to long held notions of primitive society and the euhemeristic origin of the divine, various factors indicate that the ancestor cult, that is, ancestor veneration or worship, was not observed in the Iron Age Levant. The Israelites did not adopt an ancient Canaanite ancestor cult that became the object of biblical scorn. Yet, a variety of mortuary rituals and cults were performed in Levantine society; mourning and funerary rites and longer-term rituals such as the care for the dead and commemoration. Rituals and monuments in or at burial sites, and especially the recitation of the deceased's name, recounted the dead's lived lives for familial survivors. They served broader social functions as well; e.g., to legitimate primogeniture and to reinforce a community's social collectivity. Another ritual complex from the domain of divination, namely necromancy, might have expressed the Israelite dead's beneficent powers. Yet, was this power to reveal knowledge that of the dead or was it a power conveyed through the dead, but that remained attributable to another supranatural being of non-human origin? Contemporary Assyrian necromancers utilized the ghost as a conduit through which divine knowledge was revealed to ascertain the future and so Judah's king Manasseh, a loyal Assyrian vassal, emulated these new Assyrian imperial forms of prognostication. As a de-legitimating rhetorical strategy, necromancy was then integrated into biblical traditions about the more distant past and attributed fictive Canaanite origins (Deut 18). In its final literary setting, necromancy was depicted as the Achille's heel of the nation's first royal dynasty, that of the Saulides (1 Sam 28), and more tellingly, its second, that of the Davidides (2 Kgs 21:6; 23:24).
