British children's animated series written by Josh Weinstein, who
has previously worked on 'The Simpsons' and 'Futurama'. The series
is set in and around a high school where strange events take place
and follows the students of the school as they try to make sense of
the bizarre occurrences. The pupils at the school include Becky
Butters (voice of Emma Kennedy), a studious girl who nonetheless
struggles with logic, and Mitchell Tanner (Doc Brown), a lively boy
who would much rather be playing with his friends than stuck in a
classroom. The voice cast also includes Richard Ayoade, Caroline
Aherne and Marc Silk.
allerhande stories oor hom …
Suid-Afrikaanse Geheime Diens vaagweg sou kon raai.
Hans se been lelik seermaak.
een man …
Plaas 'n korrelkop beroepsjagter, 'n gierige Portugese
uitoorle?
"The Flapdoodle Follies" is a celebration of words. Sometimes
archaic, perhaps a bit bizarre - but always beautiful - words have
a power to transport or transform, to tickle and tease, and to
terrify. Strung together in this way or that, a melody emerges,
sometimes bubbling along, sometimes crashing with vicious,
thunderous force; the result need not always be pleasant to be
enjoyable. Words also have the power to inspire our imaginations,
to set us off on a journey of reflection and exploration or on a
madcap adventure into the unknown. Without a preconceived story to
tell, the author lets the words themselves define the contours of
the pieces. The result is collection of absurdist poetry,
fantastical tales, and dark reflection. Sometimes playful,
sometimes despairing, the author follows the stream of
consciousness inspired by these words wherever it takes him,
creating pieces that, somehow, in attempting to be unfocused, open,
and direct, end up being very focused and true.
Even back before the first bits of this story hit the newsstands,
the folks who published it in "Amazing Stories" (January through
April, 1934) knew they were on to something special. "We are sure
that our readers will be highly pleased to have us give the first
installment of a story by Dr. Smith. It will continue for several
numbers and is a worthy follower of the "Skylark" stories which
were so much appreciated by our readers. We think that they will
find this story superior to the earlier ones. Dr. Smith certainly
has the narrative power, and that, joined with his scientific
position, makes him an ideal author for our columns." An awful lot
has gone under the bridge since 1934, but you know, the folks at
"Amazing" were on to something. "Triplanetary" really is all that
special, and we're thrilled to offer it to you now anew.
The editors who first published this amazing scientifictional tale
were incredibly excited to get it. "For two years readers of
"Amazing Stories" have literally clamored for a sequel to the
famous story," they said, ""The Skylark of Space," which appeared
exactly two years ago. Except that "Skylark Three" is more
thrilling, more exciting and even more chockfull of science than
the other."
You're looking at a real treat. Enjoy it!
The editors of "Amazing Stories" -- who first published this novel
in August, September, and October 1928 -- waxed ecstatic over it.
." . . when such a story as "The Skylark of Space" comes along,"
they said "we just feel as if we must shout from the housetops that
this is the greatest interplanetarian and space flying story that
has appeared this year. Indeed, it probably will rank as one of the
great space flying stories for many years to come. . . ." Copy is
often about hyperbole, but they were righter than any editor ever
can expect to be. This story has all but become a part of the
language: we feel privileged to offer it to you.
"Song of Melete," a collection of poems, is an unconventional love
story organized into six parts, each prefaced by a letter from our
speaker to the mysterious Melete. The work centers around the
timeless form of the tragic romance, and the ironic, comedic, often
absurd reality of unrequited, unfulfilled, and never-quite realized
love. Its central theme is the tragic fear that keeps us from
dreaming and hoping , that makes us complacent in our love lives,
that drowns aspiration, and that settles for the easy, the
familiar, the comfortable - the slow waking-death of the unaware
self that ends only in our final repose. It is a wicked cowardice,
and it is pervasive. But there too is a cowardice involved in
pining. Bold in affection but timid in action, the lovelorn die a
coward's death a thousand times. The question is, then, that once
reborn, do we take what we've learned in one life and use it in the
next or does fate work against us simply because we dare to believe
that, this time, it isn't going to happen?
This book presents the most accurate picture of the United States
Marine Corps at the onset of the American Civil War and describes
the actions of the Marines at the Battle of First Manassas, or as
the Union called it, Bull Run. To tell the story of the actions of
the U.S. Marines in the Manassas Campaign, distinguished Marine
Corps historians Bruce H. Norton and Phillip Gibbons begin with
Marine actions in October 1859 at Harpers Ferry, where they were
instrumental in suppressing John Brown's raid on the town's Federal
Armory and attempted slave insurrection. The Marines were the only
professional fighting force that could respond immediately when the
call for assistance came to retake the Armory, which Brown's men
had seized. The Marines were led by highly professional and
well-trained officers and non-commissioned officers who represented
a decades-old standard of excellence well established by the eve of
the Civil War. The book then discusses Marine actions at the Battle
of First Manassas, the Civil War's first battle, on July 21, 1861,
a story that has never been adequately or accurately told. In both
engagements, the Marines proved that they were "at all times
ready," as the Corps remains to this very day.
