Diversity in Europe is not the same as diversity in North America.
Here is a book that not only makes clear why imported diversity
models often fail in Europe, but alsoidentifies true European
diversity issues and what to do about them. This is a book about the
world's most culturally diverse area that explores how businesses
must manage differences here to be successful in the global
marketplace. The book's multinational team of authors show us
concrete cases of big corporations handling diversity
successfully.
Orienting is the gateway to attention, the first step in processing
stimulus information. This volume examines these initial stages of
information intake, focusing on the sensory and motivational
mechanisms that determine such phenomena as stimulus selection and
inhibition, habituation, pre-attentive processing, and expectancy.
Psychophysiological methods are emphasized throughout. The
contributors consider analyses based on cardiovascular and
electrodermal changes, reflex reactions, and neural events in the
cortex and subcortex.
Stimulated by a conference lauding Frances Graham -- held before
and during a recent meeting of the Society for Psychophysiological
Research, the book presents current theory and research by an
international cadre of outstanding investigators. A major
researcher and theorist in the field of attention for more than
three decades, Dr. Graham contributes an Afterword to the present
volume which is both a consideration of the work which has gone
before, and a new, original theory paper on preattentive processing
and attention.
Supervisors, project managers and CEOs should find this book useful
as it deals with an emerging global reality - culturally diverse
people of both genders in the workplace. The new workplace
environment demands that employees be selected, evaluated and
promoted on the basis of performance competency, regardless of sex,
race, religion or place of origin. Focusing on workplace diversity
instead of concepts of "majority" and "minority" allows managers to
offer all personnel equal opportunities. Affirmative action is now
aimed at developing human potential Diversity is becoming a
worldwide phenomenon. Written from the North American viewpoint,
this book examines the key concepts that drive American plants and
offices today which are likely to be realities overseas tomorrow,
and the concepts espoused in this book can be applied universally
The book fills a gap in management education and development. It is
a practical manual designed to teach and encourage managers to lead
and strengthen the human resources of an organization.

The clashes between President Abraham Lincoln and Chief Justice
Roger B. Taney over slavery, secession, and the president's
constitutional war powers went to the heart of Lincoln's
presidency. James Simon, author of the acclaimed" What Kind of
Nation," brings to vivid life the passionate struggle during the
worst crisis in the nation's history, the Civil War. The issues
that underlaid that crisis -- race, states' rights, and the
president's wartime authority -- resonate today in the nation's
political debate.
A comprehensive overview of the new business context for biopharma
companies, featuring numerous case studies and state-of-the-art
marketing models Biotechnology has developed into a key innovation
driver especially in the field of human healthcare. But as the
biopharma industry continues to grow and expand its reach,
development costs are colliding with aging demographics and
cost-containment policies of private and public payers.
Concurrently, the development and increased affordability of
sophisticated digital technologies has fundamentally altered many
industries including healthcare. The arrival of new information
technology (infotech) companies on the healthcare scene presents
both opportunities and challenges for the biopharma business model.
To capitalize on new digital technologies from R&D through
commercialization requires industry leaders to adopt new business
models, develop new digital and data capabilities, and partner with
innovators and payers worldwide. Written by two experts, both of
whom have had decades of experience in the field, this book
provides a comprehensive overview of the new business context and
marketing models for biotech companies. Informed by extensive input
by senior biotech executives and leading consultancies serving the
industry, it analyzes the strategies and key success factors for
the financing, development, and commercialization of novel
therapeutic products, including strategies for engagement with
patients, physicians and healthcare payers. Throughout case studies
provide researchers, corporate marketers, senior managers,
consultants, financial analysts, and other professionals involved
in the biotech sector with insights, ideas, and models. JACQUALYN
FOUSE, PhD, RETIRED PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, CELGENE
"Biotech companies have long been innovators, using the latest
technologies to enable cutting edge science to help patients with
serious diseases. This book is essential to help biotech firms
understand how they can-and must-apply the newest technologies
including disruptive ones, alongside science, to innovate and bring
new value to the healthcare system." BRUCE DARROW, MD, PhD, CHIEF
MEDICAL INFORMATION OFFICER, MOUNT SINAI HEALTH SYSTEM "Simon and
Giovannetti have written an essential user's manual explaining the
complicated interplay of the patients who deserve cutting-edge
medical care, the biotechnology companies (big and small) creating
the breakthroughs, and the healthcare organizations and clinicians
who bridge those worlds." EMMANUEL BLIN, FORMER CHIEF STRATEGY
OFFICER AND SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, BRISTOL-MYERS SQUIBB "If you
want to know where biopharma is going, read this book! Our industry
is facing unprecedented opportunities driven by major scientific
breakthroughs, while transforming itself to address accelerated
landscape changes driven by digital revolutions and the emergence
of value-based healthcare worldwide. In this ever-changing context,
we all need to focus everything we do on the patients. They are why
we exist as an industry, and this is ultimately what this
insightful essay is really about." JOHN MARAGANORE, PRESIDENT AND
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, ALNYLAM PHARMACEUTICALS "Since the mapping
of the human genome was completed nearly 15 years ago, the
biotechnology industry has led the rapid translation of raw science
to today's innovative medicines. However, the work does not stop in
the lab. Delivering these novel medicines to patients is a complex
and multifaceted process, which is elegantly described in this new
book."
Public opinion polling permeates today's politics, yet many seem
suspicious of polls and skeptical in their prominence, fearing that
overreliance on public opinion amounts to pandering or that
pollsters can manipulate a feeble public. In this book Adam Simon
argues that democracy requires that government listen to the public
and that sample surveys are the finest democratic technology yet
devised. He lays out the fundamentals of public opinion research
and illustrates his discussion of the science of polling with
recent political hot button issues as case studies_the decision to
invade Iraq, partial birth abortion, and the Clinton health care
debate. He advocates that poll results meet the standard for mass
informed consent and should play a larger role in our politics.
Simon concludes with recommendations to improve democracy from the
standpoint of citizens, politicians, and the media. Mass Informed
Consent will be of special interest to students of public opinion,
political behavior, media and politics, interest group politics,
and political communication.

This recipe book was developed and designed by a man for men. Let
me explain, I was working away from home, 1100 miles away and had
to cook for myself. I realized that I didn't want to spend hours in
the kitchen cooking and having to wash all the cooking pots and
utensils that went along with making a meal. The problem was that I
had no recipes that were for single people and absolutely none for
single men. I asked my wife to send me all the recipes she had or
could find that accomplished two goals. 1. I wanted recipes that I
would like and that could be made in a single container. 2. The
recipe could not take over one hour to make. My wife sent me all
the recipes she could find or that our relatives had. I also asked
friends at work for recipes. After I received them I realized that
I was not alone and that there were thousands of single men who
were also in the same boat as I, hence the idea to make a recipe
book for men. This book is unique in that it was made for men by a
man. You will see that the recipe is on the left side and that a
complete shopping list for the recipe is on the right. Men, I
thought, would need help buying the items to make the recipes. You
will also see that there are recipes covering Chicken, Beef, Pork
and Ham, Soups, Salads and my favorite section, Things That Go With
Beer You choose the beer. Enjoy
This study breaks new ground in investigating candidate behavior in American electoral campaigns. It centers on a question of equal importance to citizens and scholars: how can we produce better political campaigns? First, Simon develops the idea of dialogue as a standard for evaluating political campaigns. Second, he reveals that candidates' self-interest in winning leads to avoiding dialogue or substantive campaign discourse. Third, the text demonstrates the beneficial effects produced by the little dialogue that actually occurs and finally, pinpoints the forces responsible for these rare occurrences.

"Nonheterosexuals face an enormous amount of hostility and discrimination from many heterosexuals in the workplace and in society as a whole. This excellent book educates the reader about how individuals' sexual orientation may affect both how well they are accepted by their coworkers, and how they react to coworkers. It is useful in courses or training programs on diversity in general or on this particular topic. It also may be used by individuals outside of courses who simply want to learn more about sexual orientation as a workplace issue and about themselves. Amy J. Zuckerman and George F. Simons's book is definitely the best book on the topic." --Gary N. Powell, Department of Management, University of Connecticut Sexual orientation is one of the most controversial and difficult issues to deal with in the workplace today. Sexual Orientation in the Workplace is a dynamic workbook that provides an efficient guide to assist organizations in making the workplace a positive environment for workers of all sexual orientations. This volume contains a variety of simple tools and exercises that will effectively equip the reader with the necessary skills for working realistically and effectively with diverse colleagues. While looking at who makes up today's workforce with regard to sexual orientation, the authors examine facts about lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and heterosexuals, and discuss how leaders, groups, and organizations can encourage everyone to do their part to create a positive climate with policies that support everyone.
