The question Chris Gibson and his colleagues answer in this book is simple: 'Why is it not easy being green?' In 20 concise, focused and accessible chapters from birthing to dying, from toilets to Christmas - they unveil the ambiguities, instabilities and paradoxes of affluent household living in the 21st century. In so doing, they temper the easy rhetoric of sustainable lifestyles with some authentic realities drawn from the affluent world. Earth system science is showing us the deep complexity of our material planet. This book brilliantly reflects back to us the complex materiality of our cultural lives.' - Mike Hulme, University of East Anglia, UKContrary to the common rhetoric that being green is 'easy', household sustainability is rife with contradiction and uncertainty. Households attempting to respond to the challenge to become more sustainable in everyday life face dilemmas on a daily basis when trying to make sustainable decisions. Various aspects of life such as cars, computers, food, phones and even birth and death, may all provoke uncertainty regarding the most sustainable course of action. Drawing on international scientific and cultural research, as well as innovative ethnographies, this timely book probes these wide-ranging sustainability dilemmas, assessing the avenues open to households trying to improve their sustainability. The authors engage critically, and constructively, with the proposition that households are a key scale of action on climate change. They confront dilemmas of practice and circumstance, and cultural norms of lifestyle and consumerism that are linked to troublesome environmental problems - and question whether they can be easily unsettled. The work also illuminates the informal and often unheralded work by households - frequently the poorest - in reducing their environmental burden. This important book is critical to understanding both the barriers to household sustainability and the 'unsung' sustainability work carried out by householders. Containing a unique combination of science and cultural research, this fascinating book will appeal to researchers and students of environmental science, environmental studies, sustainability studies, climate change adaptation, geography, sociology, cultural studies, science and technology studies, as well as energy studies and housing research. Policy-makers in various levels of government working through sustainability problems, environmental educators, social planners and sustainability officers working for governments, will also find much to interest them in this unique book. 'To eat at Slippurinn is blissful. To have Matt's recipes is a gift.' - Diana Henry The debut from rising star chef Gisli Matt of Slippurinn, the international culinary-destination restaurant in Iceland's Westman Islands Chef Gisli Matt built Slippurinn with his family in a historic shipyard building of a small town whose landscape was changed forever by the lava flow from a 1973 erupted volcano. In this most incredible environment, where plants grow on mountains created out of lava, Gisli created a menu that both respects the local and traditional and pushes boundaries of contemporary cuisine. Gisli is forging his own way in gastronomy today. He has captured the attention of the world's culinary cognoscenti, including Ruth Reichl and Diana Henry among others, and this, Gisli's first book, reflects his extensive research into traditional Icelandic dishes to preserve local culinary knowledge while applying a modern approach for a cuisine to be enjoyed by locals and international foodies. It takes the reader right to the heart of his fascinating culinary world and island life. A book for lovers of all things Nordic and for food lovers the world over.

Frommer's books aren't written by committee, or by travel writers who simply pop in briefly to a destination and then consider the job done. We use seasoned journalists like Nicholas Gill who has been covering Panama for over a decade and has strong opinions on what travelers should do in country...and what they can skip without regret. He's also understands that not all travelers have the same needs or budgets and so has created a guide that is extremely helpful whether you're a honeymooner, a backpacker or are traveling with kids. The book covers Panama's top ecolodges, beach stays and wilderness resorts (for luxury travelers or those on a budget). It features the best beaches, bird-watching and other outdoor activities, with fastidiously researched information on the best outfitters for adventuring. It also offers an in-depth look at Panama's history and culture, from pre-Columbian times, through the building of the Canal, to the 21st century's issues and debates, as well as an overview of the ecosystems and native flora and fauna. With doable, smartly conceived itineraries for one or two weeks, for families, and for adventurers it also includes savvy, sometimes sneaky, tips for saving money in ALL price ranges.
This is a new release of the original 1945 edition.
A Modern Thriller - A Palestinian splinter group funded by Islamic extremists decides to try to gain publicity and bring the word's attention to the plight of the Palestinian people by carrying out a series of terrorist attacks on soft targets in the West. Caught up in this series of events are two brothers, Alan and Mike Edge. Alan, the elder brother is a wealthy US business man who has made a fortune in the computer industry. Mike, the younger brother is a Commander in US Naval Intelligence. Forced to witness the brutal murder of his older brother, Mike vows to exact "retribution" for his brothers death - hence the title of the book. Learning that he has inherited Alan's business fortune, a large part of which is untraceable, Mike decides to use the untraceable money together with his intelligence contacts to hunt down the perpetrators of his brothers murder. The novel becomes a detective story with revenge as the motive, but the terrorist agenda is not complete. Following the trail of the killers a much larger plot is uncovered, one that has serious consequences for the western world. A race against time begins, to eliminate the terrorist mastermind, and to prevent a disaster. The story races to an explosive conclusion, but a door is left open for the sequel. Fast paced and international in scope this is the first novel in a series which will use many of the same characters in further adventures. Technically accurate and well researched the author takes the reader into the world of ex special forces operatives now available for hire out in the civillian world. A sequel in this series is under way and there are several future plots fully developed for more adventures. Read and enjoy, Nicholas Gill.
