Herbert von Karajan emerged after World War II as the most important conductor of his generation. In 1955 he became conductor-for-life of the Berlin Philharmonic and the following year became director of the Vienna State Opera. He made frequent international tours and recordings with the Berlin Philharmonic and the combination of the charismatic conductor and his remarkable orchestra became the stuff of legend. Karajan died in 1989 at the age of 81 but his reputation lives on through his vast number of recordings and films and through the memories of those who witnessed his incomparable music-making.

"Solti" by Paul Robinson

."a beautifully balanced assessment. The author has obviously drawn extensively on personal experience and he expresses himself with clarity, precision and a refreshing impartiality.Robinson displays a scrupulous knowledge of the scores and of the ethos of the works in question."

-Jeffrey Joseph, "Music and Musicians," September, 1979. Excerpts from a review of the first edition of "Solti."

When Sir Georg Solti died in 1997 he was at the height of his powers and one of the conducting titans of his generation. The Hungarian-born Solti conducted like a man possessed and orchestras responded in kind. In the 1960s he was chosen to make the first-ever recording of Wagner's monumental Ring cycle with the Vienna Philharmonic. For more than 20 years he headed the Chicago Symphony and under his leadership the orchestra's reputation grew by leaps and bounds.

Paul Robinson wrote the first comprehensive account of Solti's life and music in 1979. This new edition of "Solti" is completely revised and updated. In view of the many important recordings and films Solti made over his long career, this new edition includes a comprehensive Discography and a detailed Videography.

Sermons On The Second Readings - Series I, Cycle B (Paperback): Frederick R Harm, Paul E Robinson, Glenn W. McDonald Sermons On The Second Readings - Series I, Cycle B (Paperback)
Frederick R Harm, Paul E Robinson, Glenn W. McDonald
R1,024 Discovery Miles 10 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The sermons in this anthology reaffirm the hope that is ours through Jesus Christ, and challenge readers to a deeper and more intense faith relationship with the almighty. The collection provides a complete set of sermons for each Sunday and major celebration throughout the Christian year based on the Second Readings from Cycle B of the Revised Common Lectionary. Outstanding preachers from across the denominational spectrum draw on texts from the New Testament epistles to explore how the practical and moral concerns of the early church offer lessons for modern Christian living. Each biblically grounded message confronts real issues with Christ-honoring solutions that bring challenge, comfort, and conviction to those who look at life with the eyes of faith.
This is an essential resource that's useful for:
- Fresh homiletical approaches to the lectionary texts
- Preaching illustrations
- A clearer understanding of scripture passages
- Adult study and discussion groups
- Personal devotions and Bible study on each Sunday's readings
"Rarely is there such a wonderful blend of the pastoral heart and the scholarly intellect. Frederick Harm's sermons draw on a wide spectrum of literature, from Luther to Paul Harvey, from Seneca to Yogi Berra, from Epicurus to John Bunyan. Harm's illustrations, far from being contrived or trite, naturally illumine the truths of the scriptures. Permeating each sermon is the deep desire to share Christ and his love with the hearer. Pastors will find ample ideas and inspiration in these sermons as they seek to build their own message for the people of God."

Hope Beneath the Surface - Sermons for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany: First Lesson: Cycle a (Paperback): Paul E Robinson Hope Beneath the Surface - Sermons for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany: First Lesson: Cycle a (Paperback)
Paul E Robinson
R355 Discovery Miles 3 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

On these pages one encounters the moving image of the holy God with Isaiah in the temple, the powerful call to justice through the thundering voice of Amos, the depth of despair in the heart of Jeremiah, and the struggle for faithfulness in the prophetic work of Hosea, Elijah, and others.
"Underlying every page is the presence of Jesus of Nazareth, who is constantly uppermost as each sermon unfolds. Robinson's writing, like his preaching, reveals a person who is in close touch with the common ventures of life. More significantly he is in touch with the common people of the working, playing, and suffering worlds. And he is in touch with the verities of the Christian faith."
Reverend Vernon Bigler
Buffalo, New York
The gripping illustrations in this book are worth the price alone.
Paul Robinson has served churches in Basel, Switzerland, and throughout the state of New York. He holds degrees from Lycoming College and Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington DC. He is currently the pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, New York.
