The Elusive Quest for European Security - From EDC to CFSP (Hardcover): S. Duke The Elusive Quest for European Security - From EDC to CFSP (Hardcover)
S. Duke
R1,498 Discovery Miles 14 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Elusive Quest for European Security provides a detailed overview of the various attempts to incorporate a security and defence role in the European integration process. Consideration is given to why these aspects of the integration process have proven so elusive and what progress has been made towards this goal. The assessment includes topics such as the enlargement of NATO, the EU's Amsterdam Treaty, and the role of the revived Western European Union, as well as the role of the main actors which includes Britain's bid for European leadership in defence, and the changing attitudes of administrations in Washington DC.

R2,845 Discovery Miles 28 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The New European Security Disorder presents a clear and comprehensive overview of the main actors, institutions and changes in European security since the end of the Cold War. Special emphasis is put on the assessment of threats to Europe's security, the lack of coherent leadershop in Bosnia and elsewhere, and the need for pan-European security institutions.

R2,845 Discovery Miles 28 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The New European Security Disorder is a comprehensive assessment of Europe's post-Cold War security threats, the roles of the main actors and institutions. Many challenges to Europe's security are non-military and have not been seriously addressed by Western Europe or its US ally. The institutional responses to Europe's post-Cold War security challenges from NATO, WEU, CSCE and the EC have been confused, duplicatory or non-existent. This book argues for the need for coherent collective leadership at the European level, the gradual phasing out of NATO, and the creation of a pan-European security structure.

The immune system can deal effectively with the majority of viruses and bacteria, less effectively with parasites, and very poorly with cancer. Why is this so? Why are McFarlane Burnet's and Lewis Thomas' predictions that the immune system is in volved in ridding the body of cancer cells, encapsulated in the catchy phrase "immunologic surveillance," so difficult to experi mentally establish? Cancer differs from infectious agents in being derived from the host. Hence, it has been postulated that cancer cells lack anti gens that the immune system can recognize. They are not "im munogenic. " However, this argument is seriously weakened by the existence of numerous human autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system effectively recognizes and attacks a va riety of self tissues. Thus, the potential clearly exists for recogni tion of the surfaces of tumor cells. Professor Naor and his colleagues have written a book that explores another possible reason: cancer cells are recognized by the immune system-but is it possible that the consequence of recognition is inhibition of the immune system-by suppressor T cells or macrophages? The evolution of the malignant state may only occur in individuals who develop this suppression. This book reviews the evidence that suppressor cells, poorly characterized and difficult to study, may be of fundamental im portance in cancer. In fact, our incapacity to understand the na ture of suppressor cells and their mode of action is one of the ma jor problems in immunology research today."

David Naor, Benjamin Y. Klein, Nora Tarcic, Jonathan S. Duke-Cohan
R2,786 Discovery Miles 27 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This original and incisive new book by Naor and his colleagues, Immunosuppression and Human Malignancy, offers a state-of-the-art critical analysis of the huge body of recent research on the immunosuppressive states associated with malignancy. Maximum attention is paid to the role of suppressor macrophages and lymphocytes in malignancy-related immunodepression. The central question posed is whether immunosuppression induces carcinogenesis and/or tumor progression, or whether it is instead the result of these processes and/or the therapy protocols. Sources of experimental artifacts are also evaluated. Encyclopedically presented, each chapter of Immunosuppression and Human Malignancy can be read independently, and each chapter features a detailed table summarizing that chapter's major findings, providing the reader with concise material to aid in evaluation. Investigators initiating work in the field will find it an especially valuable reference guide, as well as a useful tool in comparing findings published by all the major laboratories in the field. Students of medicine will find novel perspectives complementing the basic information gleaned from lectures and textbooks.Since certain treatment protocols for malignant diseases have already taken into account cause-effect relationships between tumors and immunodepression, physicians may also wish to use the book in evaluating their varied treatments, or perhaps the potential hazards associated with specific therapies. Immunosuppression and Human Malignancy appears at a time of intensive debate on the existence of suppressor T cells. Whereas immunosuppression per se has been well established, the community of immunologists is divided in its opinion about the role that suppressor T cells play in mediating this phenomenon; at the extreme end their existence has been completely denied. Although the book cannot definitely resolve this problem, it provides all the arguments for both supporters and opponents of suppressor T cells, and it may serve to stimulate formulation of alternative immunosuppression interpretations.

Climate change is affecting Indiana's environment, threatening the way Hoosiers live and do business, and introducing new stresses to the state's economy, health, and infrastructure. And while scientists predict more days of extreme weather, increased public health risks, and reduced agricultural production in the coming years, Hoosiers still have a substantial say in determining their future environment. Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond confirms that Indiana can rise to meet this threat. The culmination of Indiana University's Prepared for Environmental Change Grand Challenge, this collection showcases how scientists, policymakers, communicators, and others are working hard to protect Indiana's economy and way of life by becoming more resilient. Researchers are creating new environmental resilience frameworks, building on years of existing research on how ecosystems can adapt, how social systems process threats in order to change, and how individuals themselves fit into the larger picture. In addition to presenting research results, Climate Change and Resilience in Indiana and Beyond provides clear examples of how Hoosiers can make a difference by reducing risks, lessening the harmful impacts of climate change, and preparing for the unavoidable. What emerges in these pages is a hopeful, optimistic picture of how resilience is generalizable across systems—from forests to farms to cities—and how Hoosiers are mobilizing this resilience in the face of climate change.

The United States is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to produce electricity. Renewable energy can provide an alternative source of energy for electricity production as well as reduce fossil fuel consumption. The executive agencies in the U.S. must also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2010 based on 1990 emission levels as directed by Executive Order. However, there is currently no analysis model to provide guidance toward which renewable energy to select as a course of action. This research effort used value-focused thinking decision analysis to create a model based on inputs from the Air Force Civil Engineer Support Agency. This model allows a decision-maker to easily alter weights and value functions related to renewable energy sources as needed to correspond to the personal values of that person. These values combined with the objective scores obtained from the generated alternatives results in a suggested course of action. The sensitivity analysis shows the changes of the output based on the alterations of the weighting of each measure. All measures were varied to study their influence on the final outcome. Application of the model at three bases showed this model appears to work based on the influencing weights and values of the decision-maker.

Blooming and Contending - Chinese Literature in the Post-Mao Era (Hardcover): Michael S. Duke Blooming and Contending - Chinese Literature in the Post-Mao Era (Hardcover)
Michael S. Duke
R1,046 Discovery Miles 10 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Chinese literature has been the slave of politics at least since 1948 and especially during the Cultural Revolution. So repressed and convoluted is most Chinese literature that the West cannot read it as literature at all but rather as sociological and political texts. Professor Duke believes this has changed enough since 1977 to permit genuine literary analysis. This book surveys and analyzes the most important literary events in the PRC from 1977 to 1982. Chapter I covers the significant changes in the Chinese Party line on literature and art during this period and thus provides the backdrop for literary and artistic endeavor. Subsequent chapters deal with the critique of Chinese literature by China's own writers, the neo-realistic fiction of 1979-80, the nonfiction works of a courageous investigative reporter for the People's Daily, and the theme of humanism and its treatment in the works of Bai Hua and Dai Houying. The final chapter discusses the post-Mao generation of young writers, who are trying to create works that go beyond narrowly ideological boundaries of the past and reach toward a true modern Chinese literature.
