War on the Border - Villa, Pershing, the Texas Rangers, and an American Invasion (Paperback): Jeff Guinn War on the Border - Villa, Pershing, the Texas Rangers, and an American Invasion (Paperback)
Jeff Guinn
R217 Discovery Miles 2 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An "engagingly written" (The Wall Street Journal) account of the "Punitive Expedition" of 1916 that brought Pancho Villa and Gen. John J. Pershing into conflict, and whose reverberations continue in the Southwestern US to this day. Jeff Guinn, chronicler of the Southwestern US and of American undesirables (Bonnie and Clyde, Charles Manson, and Jim Jones) tells the "riveting and supremely entertaining narrative" (S.C. Gwynne, New York Times bestselling author of Empire of the Summer Moon) of Pancho Villa's bloody raid on a small US border town that sparked a violent conflict with the US. The "Punitive Expedition" was launched in retaliation under Pershing's command and brought together the Army, National Guard, and the Texas Rangers-who were little more than organized vigilantes with a profound dislike of Mexicans on both sides of the border. Opposing this motley military brigade was Villa, a guerrilla fighter who commanded an ever-changing force of conscripts in northern Mexico. The American expedition was the last action by the legendary African American "Buffalo Soldiers." It was also the first time the Army used automobiles and trucks, which were of limited value in Mexico, a country with no paved roads or gas stations. Curtiss Jenny airplanes did reconnaissance, another first. One era of warfare was coming to a close as another was beginning. But despite some bloody encounters, the Punitive Expedition eventually withdrew without capturing Villa. Today Anglos and Latinos in Columbus, New Mexico, where Villa's raid took place, commemorate those events, but with differing emotions. And although the bloodshed has ended, the US-Mexico border remains as vexed and volatile an issue as ever.

Staging Slavery - Performances of Colonial Slavery and Race from International Perspectives, 1770-1850 (Hardcover): Sarah J.... Staging Slavery - Performances of Colonial Slavery and Race from International Perspectives, 1770-1850 (Hardcover)
Sarah J. Adams, Jenna M. Gibbs, Wendy Sutherland
R3,766 Discovery Miles 37 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This international analysis of theatrical case studies illustrates the ways that theater was an arena both of protest and, simultaneously, racist and imperialist exploitations of the colonized and enslaved body. By bringing together performances and discussions of theater culture from various colonial powers and orbits-ranging from Denmark and France to Great Britain and Brazil-this book explores the ways that slavery and hierarchical notions of "race" and "civilization" manifested around the world. At the same time, against the backdrop of colonial violence, the theater was a space that also facilitated reformist protest and served as evidence of the agency of Black people in revolt. Staging Slavery considers the implications of both white-penned productions of race and slavery performed by white actors in blackface makeup and Black counter-theater performances and productions that resisted racist structures, on and off the stage. With unique geographical perspectives, this volume is a useful resource for undergraduates, graduates, and researchers in the history of theater, nationalism and imperialism, race and slavery, and literature.

Sport and the Pursuit of War and Peace from the Nineteenth Century to the Present - War Minus the Shooting? (Hardcover): Martin... Sport and the Pursuit of War and Peace from the Nineteenth Century to the Present - War Minus the Shooting? (Hardcover)
Martin Hurcombe, Philip Dine
R3,768 Discovery Miles 37 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume of wide-ranging essays by sport historians and sociologists examines the complex relations of war, peace and sport through a series of case studies from South and North America, Europe, North Africa, Asia and New Zealand. From formal military training in the late nineteenth century to contemporary esports, the relationship between military and sporting cultures has endured across nations in times of conflict and peace. This collection contextualizes debates around the morality and desirability of continuing to play sport against the backdrop of war as others are dying for their nation. It also examines the legacy and memory of particular wars as expressed in a range of sporting practices in the immediate aftermath of conflicts such as the World Wars and wars of independence. At the same time, this book analyses the history of sport and peace by considering how sport can operate as a pacification in some contexts and a tool of reconciliation in others. Together, and through an introductory framing essay, these essays offer scholars of sport, conflict studies and cultural history more broadly a multinational analysis of the war-peace-sport nexus that has operated throughout the world since the late nineteenth century.

Nicole Townsend, Kus Pandey, Jarrod Pendlebury
R3,759 Discovery Miles 37 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book surveys historical and emerging global air and space power issues and provides a multidisciplinary understanding of the application of air and space power in the past and present, as well as exploring potential future challenges that global air forces may face. Bringing together leading and emerging academics, professionals, and military personnel from Australia within the field of air and space power, this edited collection traces the evolution of technological innovations, as well as the ethical and cultural frameworks which have informed the development of air and space power in the 20th and 21st centuries, and contemplates its future. It covers topics such as the insurgent use of drones, the ethics of air strikes, the privatisation of air power, the historical trajectory of air power strategy, and the sociological implications of an 'air force' identity. While many of the chapters use Australian-based case studies for their analysis, they have broader applicability to a global readership, and several chapters examine other nations' experiences, including those of the United States, and the United Kingdom. This accessible, illuminating book is an important addition to contemporary air and space power literature, and will be of great interest to students and scholars of air power, air warfare, military and international history, defense studies, and contemporary strategic studies, as well as military professionals.

America's First Vaccination - The Controversy of 1721-22 (Hardcover): Barbara Heifferon America's First Vaccination - The Controversy of 1721-22 (Hardcover)
Barbara Heifferon
R3,760 Discovery Miles 37 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the response to a new scientific advance in medicine three hundred years ago to understand how this discourse revealed religious, racial, anti-intellectual, and other ideologies the first time documented vaccinations were introduced in America. This text serves as a case study that examines the historic discourses surrounding the implementation of a new prevention technique, smallpox inoculation, to prevent the devastating epidemics of smallpox that had visited the new colonies since their start on the American continent. Using this detailed analysis of the arguments surrounding the project in early America, the author examines the various arguments that circulated in the 1720s regarding the project. When compared to today's pandemic, this study argues that Americans over-react and complicate scientific applications not with logical scientific perspectives or even with ethical views, but instead bring exaggerated claims founded on uniquely American historical, religious, racial, territorial, and political ideologies. America's First Vaccination will be of interest to anyone interested in American history, the history of medicine, cultural studies, and a comparison to current pandemic events.

Democracy and Sovereignty in Spain - Conceptual Innovation in the Spanish Constituent Assembly of 1931 (Hardcover): Francisco... Democracy and Sovereignty in Spain - Conceptual Innovation in the Spanish Constituent Assembly of 1931 (Hardcover)
Francisco J. Bellido
R3,749 Discovery Miles 37 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book delves into the conceptual changes produced by the Spanish constitutional debate held between 27 August and 9 December 1931. Taking place at the beginning of Spain's Second Republic, those parliamentary deliberations brought about significant novelties in the political vocabulary. Concepts such as democracy, sovereignty, reform, revolution, and freedom, among others, were re-signified. This study investigates the conceptual contributions made by Spanish MPs in the course of the constitutional debate of 1931 by assuming, as a research approach, an interdisciplinary stance combining conceptual history, political theory, and parliamentary constitutional history. By doing so, it selects five determining issues: the pervasive discussion about two competing meanings of a democratic state; the rhetorical uses of reform and revolution; conceptual controversies about religious freedom; the disputed idea of property rights; and the functions of parliament and the president of the republic in a semi-presidential regime. The constitutional debate was largely inspired by interwar European constitutionalism which constituent representatives used to update the Spanish constitutional tradition. With that goal in mind, this book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and scholars working in the fields of conceptual history, political philosophy, parliamentary history, European political history, and European constitutionalism.

Social Struggle and Civil Society in Nineteenth Century Cuba (Hardcover): Richard E Morris Social Struggle and Civil Society in Nineteenth Century Cuba (Hardcover)
Richard E Morris
R3,753 Discovery Miles 37 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection of research from Cuba scholars explores key conflicts, episodes, currents, and tensions that helped shape Cuba as a modern, independent nation. Cuba in the nineteenth century was characterized by social struggle. Slavery, Spanish colonial rule, and racial tension permeated every corner of Cuban life-from urban dwelling to house of charity, from sugarcane field to tobacco vega, from seaport to railway-and furnished a lively spectacle for the privileged foreigner gazing upon Cuba from afar. Chapters discuss topics including slavery, gendered forced labor, indentured labor, agricultural economics, industrial development, newspaper and print culture, and the origins of the "Cuba Threat." The volume links key aspects of Cuba's history, such as social conflict and economic underdevelopment, to present a detailed analysis of Cuban civil society in the 1800s. Social Struggle and Civil Society in Nineteenth Century Cuba appeals to general readers and scholars in a range of disciplines, including history, women's studies, economics, architectural preservation, media studies, and literature.

The Routledge History Handbook of Central and Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century - Volume 3: Intellectual Horizons... The Routledge History Handbook of Central and Eastern Europe in the Twentieth Century - Volume 3: Intellectual Horizons (Hardcover)
Wlodzimierz Borodziej, Ferenc Laczo, Joachim Von Puttkamer
R6,276 Discovery Miles 62 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Intellectual Horizons offers a pioneering, transnational and comparative treatment of key thematic areas in the intellectual and cultural history of Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century. For most of the twentieth century, Central and Eastern European ideas and cultures constituted an integral part of wider European trends. However, the intellectual and cultural history of this diverse region has rarely been incorporated sufficiently into nominally comprehensive histories of Europe. This volume redresses this underrepresentation and provides a more balanced perspective on the recent past of the continent through original, critical overviews of themes ranging from the social and conceptual history of intellectuals and histories of political thought and historiography, to literary, visual and religious cultures, to perceptions and representations of the region in the twentieth century. While structured thematically, individual contributions are organized chronologically. They emphasize, where relevant, generational experiences, agendas and accomplishments, while taking into account the sharp ruptures that characterize the period. The third in a four-volume set on Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century, it is the go-to resource for understanding the intellectual and cultural history of this dynamic region.

Modern Britain 1700-1983 - A Domestic History (Hardcover): Geoffrey Alderman Modern Britain 1700-1983 - A Domestic History (Hardcover)
Geoffrey Alderman
R3,195 Discovery Miles 31 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First Published in 1986 Modern Britain 1700-1983 presents an interpretation of major trends in the domestic history of the United Kingdom since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It is not intended to offer a comprehensive history of Britain and in particular, foreign and colonial policies are not considered: the focus is on the recreation and analysis of what it felt like to live in Britain throughout the period in question. Many features of present-day Britain have their roots in the eighteenth century- industrialization, urbanisation, mass communications, constitutional monarchy, the rule of parliamentary law. To examine British history since 1700 is to approach directly an understanding of our own world. The period sees the development of a predominantly agricultural country into the first industrial nation, the progression from still high infant mortality and early death to sophistication of modern medicine, from the dominance of the traditional landed ruling class to the rise of the Liberals and of the Labour Party and of a New Conservatism. Dr Alderman's history will illuminate our past for a new generation of students.

Museums, Modernity and Conflict - Museums and Collections in and of War since the Nineteenth Century (Paperback): Kate Hill Museums, Modernity and Conflict - Museums and Collections in and of War since the Nineteenth Century (Paperback)
Kate Hill
R1,241 Discovery Miles 12 410 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Museums, Modernity and Conflict examines the history of the relationship between museums, collections and war, revealing how museums have responded to and been shaped by war and conflicts of various sorts. Written by a mixture of museum professionals and academics and ranging across Europe, North America and the Middle East, this book examines the many ways in which museums were affected by major conflicts such as the World Wars, considers how and why they attempted to contribute to the war effort, analyses how wartime collecting shaped the nature of the objects held by a variety of museums, and demonstrates how museums of war and of the military came into existence during this period. Closely focused around conflicts which had the most wide-ranging impact on museums, this collection includes reflections on museums such as the Louvre, the Stedelijk in the Netherlands, the Canadian War Museum and the State Art Collections Dresden. Museums, Modernity and Conflict will be of interest to academics and students worldwide, particularly those engaged in the study of museums, war and history. Showing how the past continues to shape contemporary museum work in a variety of different and sometimes unexpected ways, the book will also be of interest to museum practitioners.

Leon Trotsky and the Art of Insurrection 1905-1917 (Paperback): Harold Walter Nelson Leon Trotsky and the Art of Insurrection 1905-1917 (Paperback)
Harold Walter Nelson
R1,463 Discovery Miles 14 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1988. A functional definition of revolutionary military leadership is essential in understanding Leon Trotsky's role in the Russian Revolution, and it is this goal that Harold Walter Nelson explores in this title. The author states that the words, revolutionary and general carry a heavy connotative burden, and when the first is used to modify the second the new term does not lend itself to easy definition. This book pursues an analysis of this title from the context of the Russian military from 1905-1917.

Regional Voices in the Geo-Politics of Mexico and Central America, 1959-2019 (Hardcover): Monica Toussaint, Guillermo Fernandez... Regional Voices in the Geo-Politics of Mexico and Central America, 1959-2019 (Hardcover)
Monica Toussaint, Guillermo Fernandez Ampie
R3,749 Discovery Miles 37 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a collective work published as part of a larger project entitled "Mexico-Guatemala cross-border region; regional dimensions and bases for integrated development," the purpose of which is to introduce a series of issues relative to the geopolitical dimension of Mexico's actions in Central America and its stance on conflicts in the region between 1959 and 2019. The most widely published texts up until now have been written by Mexican authors, and we have less insight into how these processes have been viewed from Central America. With that in mind, we brought together a group of specialists, each highly renowned in their own country, some of them academics and others whose accounts are worth hearing because of their participation in social and political movements that are closely bound up in this issue. The following questions guided the drafting of this book: how have Central Americans viewed Mexican policies toward their countries? What do they think of Mexico's influence in various spheres of life in the region? Has Central America's past view of Mexico as their Latin American "big brother" changed? What do they consider to be the most salient issues in relations between our countries? What were the strategic interests of Cuba and the United States in the region? How did these processes develop during the Cold War, and what elements began to change in the 1990s? The papers collected here seek to answer these questions and to bring together and share knowledge and perspectives. This book will appeal to students and researchers alike interested in the politics and history of 20th century Mexico and Central America, as well as the involvement of such states during the Cold War and thereafter.

Identities In-Between in East-Central Europe (Paperback): Jan Fellerer, Robert Pyrah, Marius Turda Identities In-Between in East-Central Europe (Paperback)
Jan Fellerer, Robert Pyrah, Marius Turda
R1,254 Discovery Miles 12 540 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume addresses the question of 'identity' in East-Central Europe. It engages with a specific definition of 'sub-cultures' over the period from c. 1900 to the present and proposes novel ways in which the term can be used with the purpose of understanding identities that do not conform to the fixed, standard categories imposed from the top down, such as 'ethnic group', 'majority' or 'minority'. Instead, a 'sub-culture' is an identity that sits between these categories. It may blend languages, e.g. dialect forms, cultural practices, ethnic and social identifications, or religious affiliations as well as concepts of race and biology that, similarly, sit outside national projects.

The Political Re-Education of Germany and her Allies - After World War II (Paperback): Nicholas Pronay, Keith Wilson The Political Re-Education of Germany and her Allies - After World War II (Paperback)
Nicholas Pronay, Keith Wilson
R952 Discovery Miles 9 520 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1985, this book provides an important insight into the principal aspects of the history of the policy and practice of political re-education from its origins to 1951. 'Political re-education' was the British alternative to the ideas put forward by the USA and the USSR in the common search for a post-war policy which would permanently prevent the resurgence of Germany for a third time as a hostile military power. It was adopted as Allied policy and remains one of the boldest and most imaginative policies in history for securing lasting peace. This book discusses the question of the place of this policy in the preservation of peace and the integration of Germany and Japan into the community of their historical enemies.

Australia, Wilkommen - A History of the Germans in Australia (Hardcover): Jurgen Tampke, Colin Doxford Australia, Wilkommen - A History of the Germans in Australia (Hardcover)
Jurgen Tampke, Colin Doxford
R3,195 Discovery Miles 31 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Australia, Wilkommen (1990) documents the rich and varying contribution made by Germans in Australia. Originally welcomed as hardy pioneers, German settlers were responsible for discovering and opening up vast tracts of land. German scientists and entrepreneurs played a large role in the Australian economy. But as the German empire expanded into the Pacific, and Britain and Australia were drawn into two world wars, perceptions of Germany and its people changed and immigrants were caught in the crossfire between the old and new worlds. This book examines these issues surrounding German immigration into Australia, and the shifting perceptions of both the immigrants and the nation itself.

Daniel Beauvois
R2,794 Discovery Miles 27 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1991, The Noble, the Serf and the Revizor is a historical and sociological study of the Polish nobility of the Western Ukraine between the two great uprisings that shook Poland in the 19th century is based almost entirely on original, unpublished documents. Daniel Beauvois throws an entirely new light on the Polish nobility of the Ukraine, on its development and particular mentality. Furthermore, his research reveals mechanisms of domination and assimilation, which the Czarist bureaucracy can be said to have pioneered long before the Soviet empire. During this period, the Russian revizor, a key figure in the social drama described in these pages, ruthlessly lowered the status of the majority of the Polish nobles in the Ukraine. Thereafter, their fate was defined by two basic realities: poverty and the decline of their national identity and social status. Only a small minority of rich landowners survived. The price they paid was total political subservience, a subservience which gave rise to an increasingly conservative mentality and the loss of all real contact with the Polish national movement. This book will be of interest to students of history, political science, sociology and international relations.
