Origins of Ownership - A Brief History of Land Ownership and Tenure from Earliest Time to the Modern Era (Hardcover): D.R.... Origins of Ownership - A Brief History of Land Ownership and Tenure from Earliest Time to the Modern Era (Hardcover)
D.R. Denman
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The English systems of land tenure have influenced land-holding far beyond Britain. Freehold, for example, a common-place in many places, has its origin in the feudal tenure of Anglo-Norman England. Much has been written about the origins of English land ownership but the contributions are hidden. This book, originally published in 1958 draws together legal, economic and social historical themes, introducing the reader to the authoritative texts of the many aspects of the subject up until the 16th Century.

Rich Man's Farming - The Crisis in Agriculture (Hardcover): Michael Franklin Rich Man's Farming - The Crisis in Agriculture (Hardcover)
Michael Franklin
R2,866 Discovery Miles 28 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1988, this book was written at a time of excessive budgetary costs, huge surpluses and damaging trade conflicts. This study examines why a crisis situation was allowed to develop, nd proposes the most effective ways, both nationally and internationally – to chieve more rational agricultural support and trade policies. It concentrates on the efforts to reform the Common Agricultural Policy in the EU, on United States support policies, and on the GATT negotiations.

Producers and Consumers - A Study in Co-Operative Relations (Hardcover): Margaret Digby Producers and Consumers - A Study in Co-Operative Relations (Hardcover)
Margaret Digby
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although originally published in 1928, many of the issues discussed in this book remain pertinent today: in unstable markets grappling with labour shortages, how to pay the producers of food a fair price, at a price the consumer can afford, whilst maximising efficiency and minimising waste. Against this backdrop, the book discusses co-operative movements from the UK, Denmark, New Zealand, the former USSR and the USA.

Estate Capital - The Contribution of Landownership to Agricultural Finance (Hardcover): D.R. Denman Estate Capital - The Contribution of Landownership to Agricultural Finance (Hardcover)
D.R. Denman
R2,882 Discovery Miles 28 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1957, this book introduces the term ‘estate capital’ to distinguish investment in land and buildings, in which agriculture rests, from investment in agricultural machinery and other forms of capital which are essentially agricultural. The book provides a general review of the formation of estate capital from estate income, the provision of estate capital from other sources the level of investment on agricultural estates. Concluding chapters describe the influence of estate character upon the formation, provision and investment level of estate capital. Estate duty levy on agricultural estates, tenants’ contributions to capital investment, and charity estates receive special attention.

Agricultural Marketing and the EEC (Hardcover): Michael Butterwick, Edmund Neville-Rolfe Agricultural Marketing and the EEC (Hardcover)
Michael Butterwick, Edmund Neville-Rolfe
R2,894 Discovery Miles 28 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1971, this book resulted from a 2-year study of the implications of the Common Market agricultural policy in relation to agricultural marketing in Britain. It provides the background to agricultural policies and explains why marketing developed differently in Britain and European countries. There are specific chapters on cereals, sugar, diary produce, horticultural products, livestock and meat, vegetable oils and oilseeds, eggs and poultry-meat and other farm products such as hops potatoes and wool). The book discusses such issues as the possible effects on British agricultural and horticultural marketing of adopting the CAP and the role played by the producer organisations.

Trends of Agriculture in the Ganges Valley - A Study in Agricultural Economics (Hardcover): Birendranath Ganguli Trends of Agriculture in the Ganges Valley - A Study in Agricultural Economics (Hardcover)
Birendranath Ganguli
R3,206 Discovery Miles 32 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1938, this book explores the problem of the adjustment of the population in the early 20th century to the agricultural-economic environment in a geographical and economic setting. The study of the modern problem of population growth is also one of human adjustment in its wider sense to the whole of the environment, which in itself is an ensemble of various interdependent factors. The study is based on a classification of agricultural regions in the Ganges Valley which shows some of the world’s highest records of agricultural productivity.

The Last Hunger Season - A Year in an African Farm Community on the Brink of Change (Paperback, First Trade Paper Edition):... The Last Hunger Season - A Year in an African Farm Community on the Brink of Change (Paperback, First Trade Paper Edition)
Roger Thurow
R530 R495 Discovery Miles 4 950 Save R35 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At 4:00 am, Leonida Wanyama lit a lantern in her house made of sticks and mud. She was up long before the sun to begin her farm work, as usual. But this would be no ordinary day, this second Friday of the new year. This was the day Leonida and a group of smallholder farmers in western Kenya would begin their exodus, as she said,"from misery to Canaan," the land of milk and honey.Africa's smallholder farmers, most of whom are women, know misery. They toil in a time warp, living and working essentially as their forebears did a century ago. With tired seeds, meager soil nutrition, primitive storage facilities, wretched roads, and no capital or credit, they harvest less than one-quarter the yields of Western farmers. The romantic ideal of African farmers--rural villagers in touch with nature, tending bucolic fields--is in reality a horror scene of malnourished children, backbreaking manual work, and profound hopelessness. Growing food is their driving preoccupation, and still they don't have enough to feed their families throughout the year. The wanjala --the annual hunger season that can stretch from one month to as many as eight or nine--abides.But in January 2011, Leonida and her neighbours came together and took the enormous risk of trying to change their lives. award-winning author and world hunger activist Roger Thurow spent a year with four of them--Leonida Wanyama, Rasoa Wasike, Francis Mamati, and Zipporah Biketi--to intimately chronicle their efforts. In The Last Hunger Season, he illuminates the profound challenges these farmers and their families face, and follows them through the seasons to see whether, with a little bit of help from a new social enterprise organization called One Acre Fund, they might transcend lives of dire poverty and hunger. The daily dramas of the farmers' lives unfold against the backdrop of a looming global challenge: to feed a growing population, world food production must nearly double by 2050. If these farmers succeed, so might we all.

New Challenges for Future Sustainability and Wellbeing (Hardcover): Ercan OEzen, Simon Grima, Rebecca E. Dalli Gonzi New Challenges for Future Sustainability and Wellbeing (Hardcover)
Ercan OEzen, Simon Grima, Rebecca E. Dalli Gonzi
R3,856 Discovery Miles 38 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Our current economic systems have become addicted to growth at all costs, as measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP). They assume that GDP growth is synonymous with increased wellbeing and prosperity. However, this approach has led to growing inequality, an escalating climate crisis, and the depletion of natural and social capital. Our approach to economics and development needs to be fundamentally transformed. New Challenges for Future Sustainability and Wellbeing is a collection of 25 studies about sustainability and the related challenges, such as income, wealth, social aspects, the environment, education and regional equality that influence the pace of economic development and deteriorates well-being of people and organisations all over the world. This book provides a platform for scholars, researchers and professionals from different disciplinary backgrounds to discuss, highlight and exchange ideas on these challenges and prospects for both economic and business development.

Types of Rural Economy - Studies in World Agriculture (Hardcover): René Dumont Types of Rural Economy - Studies in World Agriculture (Hardcover)
René Dumont; Translated by Douglas Magnin
R3,851 Discovery Miles 38 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in English in 1957 this book quickly became a classic of comparative agricultural studies. The book brings together a wide range of case studies from the UK, Europe, Africa and South East Asia which together form a broad yet highly detailed view of world agriculture in the 20th Century.

Indigenous Agricultural Revolution - Ecology and Food Production in West Africa (Hardcover): Paul Richards Indigenous Agricultural Revolution - Ecology and Food Production in West Africa (Hardcover)
Paul Richards
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1985, this book argues forcefully and practically for new relationship between science and the small farmer. It advocates scientific research seeking out changes which are already taking place within the smallholder farming sector and building on local initiatives. Drawing on his experience of West Africa, the author demonstrates that many of the most successful innovations in food-crop production during the 20th century have indigenous roots and that there should therefore be less emphasis on ‘teaching’ farmers how to farm and more emphasis on how to foster and support local adaptation and inventiveness. This book will be of interest to students of agriculture, environmental studies and rural development as well as those working with relief and development agencies.

Coping with Hunger - Hazard and Experiment in an African Rice-Farming System (Hardcover): Paul Richards Coping with Hunger - Hazard and Experiment in an African Rice-Farming System (Hardcover)
Paul Richards
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986, Coping with Hunger demonstrates that effective agricultural development in resource-poor regions must be based in a respect for the indigenous farmer’s understanding of the environment. Based on participant-observation of rice farming in Sierra Leone, the book challenges the prevailing of attitudes of policy makers in the late 20th Century and restores indigenous culture and local wisdom to their rightful place. After analysing the fate of a number of ‘top-down ‘attempts to improve rice cultivation in Sierra-Leone the author derives an alternative agenda of research and development issues more closely reflecting the resource-poor farmers’ major interests and priorities. As a significant research-based contribution to the widespread general debates about the relevance of social factors in technological change, this book will be of interest to students in social and environmental sciences.

Agricultural Geography (Hardcover): W.B. Morgan, R.J.C. Munton Agricultural Geography (Hardcover)
W.B. Morgan, R.J.C. Munton
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1971, this book is a systematic study of the major features and factors of the location and distribution of global agricultural enterprises. Special emphasis is given to approaches to the subject developed by economists and economic geographers, but all aspects of agricultural geography are reviewed including physical environmental problems. An introduction to the problem of classification and data collection together with instruction in some simple analytical techniques is given to equip the student with the basic methods for their own research.

Planning for Agricultural Development (Hardcover): J A Mollett Planning for Agricultural Development (Hardcover)
J A Mollett
R3,119 Discovery Miles 31 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1984, this text was written as a guide to agricultural policy makers, planners and project managers in developing countries, particularly for those in the areas of programme formulation and implementation. Elements from successful agricultural and rural development plans have been selected. The work discusses the link between agricultural and overall planning, the various aspects of agricultural planning (including the usual components and deficiencies of plans, time horizons and scope of plans, and regional planning), and it concludes with brief look at the preparation of a plan and objectives for agricultural development.

Nowhere To Go But Down? - Peasant Farming and the International Development Game (Hardcover): Andrew S. Macdonald Nowhere To Go But Down? - Peasant Farming and the International Development Game (Hardcover)
Andrew S. Macdonald
R2,884 Discovery Miles 28 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1989, this book is a unique examination of subsistence farming in the developing world, and its potential for development. The author writes from the conviction that the farming system is limited in its potential for development by the energy value of manpower and that unless the plight of developing world communities is understood and the importance of manpower constraint recognized, inputs of development funds will be wasted. Clarifying the strengths and limitations of the subsistence farming system, the book makes clear the complexities and difficulties encountered in achieving agricultural development in the poorest countries – providing an informed insight into the inevitability of future famine.

The Farmers of Old England (Hardcover): Eric Kerridge The Farmers of Old England (Hardcover)
Eric Kerridge
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1973, this book tells the story of the English countryside and its inhabitants between 1560 and 1760; the time when British agriculture became the wonder and envy of the world. The history of the land itself is covered, as well as farming techniques and a farming as a business. The day-to-day existence of rural people, their ambitions and conditions of work are brought to life. The book distils the history of rural England and takes the reader to the heart of England itself.

Agriculture and Economic Growth in England 1650-1815 (Hardcover): E.L. Jones Agriculture and Economic Growth in England 1650-1815 (Hardcover)
E.L. Jones
R2,880 Discovery Miles 28 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1967, this was the first book to discuss why agricultural supply became more ‘responsive’ and to provide broadly based evidence of the ways in which that ‘responsiveness’ may have influenced the growth of the economy. The editor chose 7 essays, reprinted in full, to illustrate altered perspectives of agricultural change. His substantial introduction places the beginnings of a significant rise in farm output as far back as the mid-seventeenth century and concludes that agriculture played a vital but complicated role in the economy of eighteenth-century England.

Family Agriculture - Tradition and Transformation (Hardcover): David G. Francis Family Agriculture - Tradition and Transformation (Hardcover)
David G. Francis
R2,885 Discovery Miles 28 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1994, this book examines the importance of family agricultural systems in both the developed and the developing worlds. Throughout the world, and throughout history, the family unit has been at the heart of agricultural systems. Working together, families not only furnish their own needs, but form the basis for society itself: they provide the labour, population, resources and the market to maintain much of the world’s economic and social development. But the global race for financial prosperity, with its large-scale intensive farming techniques, is increasingly undermining the family’s role in food production and social cohesion. This book explores both traditional and modern farming techniques and looks at their different consequences for national agricultural resources and for rural societies. Finally, it suggests ways in which technology can be harnessed to meet the needs of the family rather than undermine it, in order to achieve a viable and sustainable agriculture for the future.

Man and Natural Resources - An Agricultural Perspective (Hardcover): Cedric Stanton Hicks Man and Natural Resources - An Agricultural Perspective (Hardcover)
Cedric Stanton Hicks
R2,868 Discovery Miles 28 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1975, yet prophetic in its wisdom this book deals with major aspects of man’s ecological destruction in an industrial framework. As well as discussing the destruction of forests by early civilizations the book examines the rate and extension of environmental deterioration in more recent times and the importance of the integrated ‘feed-back’ controls which maintain stability in the ecosphere of which humankind forms a part. Examining the role of entropy, energy quanta and indeterminacy in overthrowing both science and economic theory, the book provides examples from the 20th Century of the uncontrolled demands for energy and material resources, as well as of increasing toxic hazard in the biosphere.

Forestland Investment - Valuation and Analysis (Hardcover): Bin Mei, Michael L. Clutter Forestland Investment - Valuation and Analysis (Hardcover)
Bin Mei, Michael L. Clutter
R4,567 Discovery Miles 45 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Forestland investment has surged in the past few decades as a result of land ownership change in the forestry industry. Timberland investment and management organizations and real estate investment trusts have bought up land and resources that were divested by vertically integrated forest products companies. This book provides a seminal coverage of this seismic shift in the industry, exploring the philosophy, driving factors, valuation, theory, research, implementation, practice, and effects of forestland investment. Across 15 chapters the book reviews the history of forestland investment; discusses the optimal forest rotation; explains timberland appraisal; examines the return drivers of forestland; analyzes timberland index construction methods and results; prices timberland assets; reviews financial and real options; investigates real option values in forestland management; evaluates timber harvest contracts; examines new opportunities in the emerging woody bioenergy market; and eventually offers prospects on forestland investment in the future. It also discusses how forest carbon can be used as a nature-based climate solution. This book is essential reading for forestry business students and scholars, as well as practitioners and policymakers in the industry.

A Global Atlas of Atolls (Hardcover): Walter M. Goldberg, Eugene C. Rankey A Global Atlas of Atolls (Hardcover)
Walter M. Goldberg, Eugene C. Rankey
R6,766 Discovery Miles 67 660 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Both authors are ideally suited to prepare this book, offering a nice mix of biological and geological expertise on coral reef systems. There is a glaring gap in the market for this book - there is no literature or database that comprehensively summarises the latest remote sensing imagery for global atolls. There is no comparable book. The treatment employs state-of-the-art satellite imagery and updates the existing Atlas of Coral Reefs by Spalding et al which came out more than 20 years ago. Atolls are a favorite topic of research in the biological/ecological and geological sciences due to their unusual ring-like reef form and their laboratory-like, isolated settings. The great strength and contribution of this book is the comprehensive analysis and summary of all these different atolls and their main characteristics in one place. The writing is excellent, striking a nice balance between providing enough detail while also being accessible to a general reader. A useful resource for a range of higher education courses, undergraduate and masters level courses i.e., coastal processes and environments, coral reefs and climate change, oceans coasts and climate. One reviewer says: "This is a superb volume, which I suspect will be much referred to. The authors a pre-eminent in this, and it will be authoritative as well as useful to a wide range of people."

Push Button Agriculture - Robotics, Drones, Satellite-Guided Soil and Crop Management (Paperback): K.R. Krishna Push Button Agriculture - Robotics, Drones, Satellite-Guided Soil and Crop Management (Paperback)
K.R. Krishna
R2,641 Discovery Miles 26 410 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book covers three main types of agricultural systems: the use of robotics, drones (unmanned aerial vehicles), and satellite-guided precision farming methods. Some of these are well refined and are currently in use, while others are in need of refinement and are yet to become popular. The book provides a valuable source of information on this developing field for those involved with agriculture and farming and agricultural engineering. The book is also applicable as a textbook for students and a reference for faculty.

Ancient and Traditional Foods, Plants, Herbs and Spices used in the Middle East (Hardcover): Rajkumar Rajendram, Victor Preedy,... Ancient and Traditional Foods, Plants, Herbs and Spices used in the Middle East (Hardcover)
Rajkumar Rajendram, Victor Preedy, Vinood Patel
R5,190 Discovery Miles 51 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is a great deal of contemporary interest in this topic and given this context, it is surprising that there are few texts around that cover this area. I think the proposal is perfectly placed to address this gap in the available literature in terms of an accessible ‘one-stop shop’ which researchers and scientists value as a broad overview of the contemporary literature and evidence-base. This book will interest practitioners and researchers in the food science and nutrition fields, and possibly others with an interest in the interaction between diet and health. There have been considerable advances in scientific techniques in the last few decades and these have been used to examine the composition and applications of traditional cures. Modern science has also seen the investigation of herbs, spices, and botanicals beyond their traditional usage. The evidence-based approach that the Editors propose is relatively rare for this type of topic. I think the market is already established for a book of this kind, it’s simply that there isn’t currently a book available to tap this market. I would believe this book would fulfill that role admirably.

Agricultural Development in Asia and Africa - Essays in Honor of Keijiro Otsuka (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Jonna P. Estudillo,... Agricultural Development in Asia and Africa - Essays in Honor of Keijiro Otsuka (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Jonna P. Estudillo, Yoko Kijima, Tetsushi Sonobe
R1,718 Discovery Miles 17 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Open Access book explores the multifaceted nature of agricultural and rural development in Asia and examines the extent to which the Asian experience is being replicated in contemporary Africa. This volume compiles the works of top scholars who provided analyses and evidences from household-level surveys collected for many years in several parts of Asia and Africa. The most important finding presented in this book is that African agricultural development has evolved following the pathways of Asian agricultural development. The common pathways are borrowed technology from abroad and adaptive research in rice farming; secured property rights on natural resources; adoption of ICTs; investments in human capital, including training; and launching of the high-value agriculture. In both continents, agricultural development started in the crop sector, which had a strong tendency to induce the dynamic development of other sectors in rural areas.

The Antievolution Pamphlets of Harry Rimmer - A Ten-Volume Anthology of Documents, 1903–1961 (Paperback): Edward B. Davis The Antievolution Pamphlets of Harry Rimmer - A Ten-Volume Anthology of Documents, 1903–1961 (Paperback)
Edward B. Davis
R1,517 Discovery Miles 15 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1995, The Antievolution Pamphlets of Harry Rimmer is the sixth volume in the series, Creationism in Twentieth Century America. The volume brings together original sources from the prominent evangelist and pastor Harry Rimmer. The consortium of pamphlets in this volume detail Rimmer’s antievolutionist sentiments, a notion which characterized his early writings. The pamphlets detail Rimmer’s rhetoric on evolution and science from the early part of the 20th century as he travelled across America to disseminate his writings. The works in this volume address Rimmer’s polemic on the danger posed by modern science and the consequential disassociation with religion. While Rimmer did not discount science itself, he argued for, what he termed, ‘true science’, claiming that modern science was based only in scientific opinion and not fact. As a self-proclaimed scientist, these writings take a unique view of the relationship between religion and science from this period through Rimmer’s dual nature as both scientist and pastor. This volume will be of great interest to historians of natural history, science and religion.
