Grab a glass and head to the South of France for fun and flirtation amongst the vines... Jenna Jenkins needs to get away. She's been unceremoniously sacked from her job and it's make or break time with her boyfriend Angus, so a summer job at the beautiful Chateau Montmorency in the south of France seems like the perfect solution. Planning the party of the century, dining out with suave Frenchmen, and giving in to a little temptation among the vines are all in a day's work... but is there a secret lurking in the chateau cellars? Caught in a trap she can't talk - or drink - herself out of, Jenna is well and truly corkscrewed. Things are really hotting up under the sun when a mysterious benefactor helps her out of her jam. The book is perfectly relevant to today's wine lovers, charmingly presented: wine information like bouquet, colour, and taste profile is essentially the same today, and Montorgueil's reverence for wine is delivered with an elan and is oh-so-very French, with observations like A full-bodied red wine wants to be laid on its side and made cozy. Delightful and informative, Monseigneur le Vin is sure to appeal to new and experienced wine lovers alike.

Country House Brewing in England, 1500-1900 (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Pamela Sambrook Country House Brewing in England, 1500-1900 (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Pamela Sambrook
R3,434 Discovery Miles 34 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Until the eighteenth century or even later, beer was the staple drink of most men and women at all levels of society. Tea and coffee were expensive luxuries while water might well carry disease. To supply the needs of both owners and servants, every country house with an accessible source of water had a brewhouse, usually close at hand. Although many of the brewhouses still stand, in some cases with the original brewing vessels (as at Lacock and Charlecote), their habitual conversion to other uses has allowed them to be ignored. Yet they are distinctive buildings - as much part of a country house as an ice-house or stables - which need both to be recognised and preserved.
The scale of brewing in country houses, which went on to a surprisingly late date in the nineteenth century (with odd survivals, such as Hickleton in Yorkshire, into the twentieth), was often considerable, if small besides that of commercial brewing. Copious records for both brewing and consumption exist. Pamela Sambrook describes the brewing equipment, such as coppers, mash tuns underbacks and coolers; the types of beers brewed, from strong ale to small beer and how they were kept; and the brewers themselves, their skills and attitudes.
"English Country House Brewing, 1500-1900" shows the role beer played in the life of the country house, with beer allowances and beer money an integral part of servants' rewards. Generous allowances were made for arduous tasks, such as harvesting. For celebrations, such as the heir's coming of age, extra-strong ale was provided. This book, which is heavily illustrated, is an important and original contribution to architectural, brewing and social history.

Churchill: A Drinking Life - Champagne, Cognac, and Cocktails (Hardcover): Gin Sander, Roxanne Langer Churchill: A Drinking Life - Champagne, Cognac, and Cocktails (Hardcover)
Gin Sander, Roxanne Langer
R313 Discovery Miles 3 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"An intoxicating read. You'll want to consume it twice." -A.J. Baime, New York Times bestselling author of The Accidental President and Dewey Defeats Truman A fun little book packed with historic Churchill information, drinking companions, locations, and preferences, as well as plenty of cocktail recipes! Churchill was seldom short of a witty remark, and made his views on drinking quite well-known: "I have taken far more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me." When feeling down he said he felt like "a bottle of champagne . . . left uncorked for the night." And when encouraging a young government minister to indulge in another drink, he promised, "Go ahead, I won't write it in my diary." Divided into four sections-Drink Choices, Drinking Companions, Drinking Spots, and Drink Recipes-this book will keep readers turning the pages of fresh and fun material as they lift a drink along with Winston. The book will also focus on the various eras-from the 1910s through the 1960s-the times in which he was drinking alone and with others. Working with the historic companies that kept him refreshed, it will include vintage advertisements and marketing material from their closely guarded archives. Winston certainly drank with a colorful cast of characters, and you'll glimpse those such as FDR, Stalin, Coco Chanel, Charlie Chaplin, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and various other kings, queens, dukes, and duchesses. Among the elegant settings we will pop in and out of for a drink include Hearst Castle, Chanel's house in the South of France, the Ritz Hotel in Paris, the Dorchester in London, Monaco, the Savoy, the Biltmore, and of course the bars and first-class cabins of the famed ocean liners the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary. So raise a glass and join us in toasting Churchill's life and unique abilities!

Soon you're sipping a Mexican Vieux Carre, which uses tequila for a similar rich and spicy effect. * If a Gin & Tonic is more your speed, head toward tropical territory with a gingery Lime in de Coconut. Like that one? Go for a Coconut-Lime Daiquiri next. * Everyone loves a Margarita, but have you tried the Manhattan-inspired La Rosita? * Discover the versatility of vodka with a cousin to the Martini, in the botanical Stupid Cupid.
