Chronic Pain - A Resource for Effective Manual Therapy (Paperback): Chronic Pain - A Resource for Effective Manual Therapy (Paperback)
R1,102 Discovery Miles 11 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The effective management of pain is a problem which confronts all manual therapists. This book provides a clear picture of our current understanding of pain mechanisms and shows how that knowledge should inform approaches to treatment. The knowledge of pain science that the book conveys will help the therapist select the best approach to the clinical management of each patient. Different types of pain disorder may require different management strategies which may involve only one discipline or, at other times, a multidisciplinary team which may also include medical clinicians, psychologists, occupational therapists, nurses and other healthcare practitioners as well as manual therapists. The book is divided into three parts: An introduction to the concept of pain and its neurophysiological mechanisms. A review and discussion of current and potential evidence-based evaluation methods. A review and discussion of common types of functional pain disorders. This approach provides readers with a comprehensive reference to evidence-based information that should enable them to manage their clients' pain as effectively as possible.

Methods in Pain Research (Paperback): Lawrence Kruger Methods in Pain Research (Paperback)
Lawrence Kruger
R1,933 Discovery Miles 19 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the past two decades, pain research has become one of the most rapidly growing areas of neuroscience activity. Methods in Pain Research brings together in a single volume a survey of the methods that can be used to study a reaction or 'sensory report' in humans that can only be inferred by indirect means in animal or tissues studies. It presents source material, useful advice, and guidance to specific details as well as examples of current usage. With each topic presented by one or more of the leading experts in the field, it examines the major modern techniques used in studying pain, including gene linkage, brain imaging methods, the use of transgenic rodent models, painful sensory neuropathy models, and more. The material also covers conventional methods of pain study, such as anatomical and electophysiological techniques. Methods in Pain Research provides up-to-date methodology and a guide to the strategies of experimental design.

OK (Paperback): Michelle McSweeney OK (Paperback)
Michelle McSweeney
R253 Discovery Miles 2 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. "OK" as a word accepts proposals, describes the world as satisfactory (but not good), provides conversational momentum, or even agrees (or disagrees). OK as an object, however, tells a story of how technology writes itself into language, permanently altering communication. OK is a young word, less than 200 years old. It began as an acronym for "all correct" when the steam-powered printing press pushed newspapers into the mainstream. Today it is spoken and written by nearly everyone in the world. Drawing on linguistics, history, and new media studies, Michelle McSweeney traces OK from its birth in the Penny Presses through telephone lines, grammar books, and television signals into the digital age. Nearly ubiquitous and often overlooked, OK illustrates the never-ending dance between language, technology, and culture, and offers lessons for our own techno-historical moment. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Meanings of Pain (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016): Simon van Rysewyk Meanings of Pain (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2016)
Simon van Rysewyk
R5,233 Discovery Miles 52 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although pain is widely recognized by clinicians and researchers as an experience, pain is always felt in a patient-specific way rather than experienced for what it objectively is, making perceived meaning important in the study of pain. The book contributors explain why meaning is important in the way that pain is felt and promote the integration of quantitative and qualitative methods to study meanings of pain. For the first time in a book, the study of the meanings of pain is given the attention it deserves. All pain research and medicine inevitably have to negotiate how pain is perceived, how meanings of pain can be described within the fabric of a person's life and neurophysiology, what factors mediate them, how they interact and change over time, and how the relationship between patient, researcher, and clinician might be understood in terms of meaning. Though meanings of pain are not intensively studied in contemporary pain research or thoroughly described as part of clinical assessment, no pain researcher or clinician can avoid asking questions about how pain is perceived or the types of data and scientific methods relevant in discovering the answers.

Pain - A Sociological Introduction (Hardcover): E. Denny Pain - A Sociological Introduction (Hardcover)
E. Denny
R1,508 Discovery Miles 15 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pain in one form or another is probably the most common symptom presented to medical and healthcare professionals. Long a subject of biomedical interest, more recent biopsychosocial theories have extended the study of pain as a concept which is highly individual in the way it is experienced. Today s landscape offers a broad array of approaches to understanding pain and, crucially, to alleviating its impact. This concise and accessible volume aims to make sense of what is at first sight an eclectic mix of theoretical and practical work on pain, from a distinctly sociological perspective. While there has been much quantitative medical research on pain, in exploring sociology s important contributions to this field Elaine Denny offers insight into the world of those living with pain and the meaning it has in their lives. She provides readers with a range of explanations of pain and various influences on the experience of pain, critically analysing competing schools of thought and embedding this work in the everyday practice of providing care. The result is an illuminating volume for students of health and medical professions studying pain, the body, and the sociology of health and illness.

Understanding Anesthesia - What You Need to Know about Sedation and Pain Control (Hardcover, New): Steven L. Orebaugh Understanding Anesthesia - What You Need to Know about Sedation and Pain Control (Hardcover, New)
Steven L. Orebaugh
R1,135 Discovery Miles 11 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most people choose their surgeon with care, but very few think about the anesthesiologist, even though that physician's skills and approach can significantly influence surgical outcomes. Here Dr. Steven L. Orebaugh recommends steps we all can take to secure safe and effective anesthesia. What type of anesthesia is used-and how it is applied-directly affects postoperative comfort as well as mental clarity and rehabilitation. This book describes the various options for anesthesia and how they can be used together for the best possible outcome and optimal pain management. Dr. Orebaugh offers a brief history of the subject and a clear and careful overview of the types of anesthesia and their associated complications and risks. Dr. Orebaugh focuses especially on the benefits of regional anesthesia. When appropriately applied-whether alone or with other methods-spinal and peripheral nerve blocks often lead to better recovery and reduced pain. Studies show that as many as half of all surgical patients experience poorly controlled postoperative pain. Regional anesthetic nerve blocks can help significantly in managing this pain while reducing the side effects of general anesthetics and pain medications. A better understanding of anesthesia will reassure people contemplating surgery and equip them to take the necessary steps toward healthy recovery. Knowing their options, they can have informed conversations with their doctor and indicate a preference for a specific anesthetic treatment. Written by a compassionate and experienced anesthesiologist and backed by scientifically accurate information and the latest research, this book will help patients do just that.

Muscles, Nerves, and Pain - A Guide to Diagnosis, Pain Concepts and Therapy (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2017): Wilfred A. Nix Muscles, Nerves, and Pain - A Guide to Diagnosis, Pain Concepts and Therapy (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2017)
Wilfred A. Nix
R3,556 Discovery Miles 35 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many patients suffer from problems in their muscles or nerves in combination with pain. This book is about the complex interplay between the causes of these problems and the puzzle they pose. Pain is the subjective experience of a psychophysical phenomenon arising from a defined area in the body. It is a cry for help and challenges the physician to ask the right questions and to carry out the right examinations. If they succeed in doing so, the patient's signs and symptoms will be translated into the present knowledge of pain concepts to initiate appropriate therapy. With this goal in mind, this book summarizes the latest scientific information on pain states and their mechanisms. It provides a deeper understanding of the different pain conditions and allows physicians to form strategies for better pain therapy. The second edition includes more graphs, tables, and illustrations. It is updated with the current and dynamically expanding knowledge on the therapy of several disease states and explains in more detail the processing of pain in the central nervous system. When puzzling symptoms of sensory, motor, and autonomic deficits are evident, an examination has to be performed systematically in order to reach the correct diagnosis. This calls for suitable anatomical knowledge. Depending on where a lesion exists within a peripheral nerve, the root or the plexus, typical patterns of paralysis can be detected. Numerous illustrations in the book help physicians to more easily understand and solve problems of peripheral nerve and root injuries and their sequelae in their daily work.

Heal the Pain, Comfort the Spirit - The Hows and Whys of Modern Pain Treatment (Hardcover): Dorene O'Hara Heal the Pain, Comfort the Spirit - The Hows and Whys of Modern Pain Treatment (Hardcover)
Dorene O'Hara
R2,034 Discovery Miles 20 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Specialists estimate that as many as 60 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, and approximately 20 percent of the population in most developed countries reports having chronic pain. According to one study, chronic back pain alone afflicts more than four million Americans, and nearly 50 percent of these are disabled by it. Pain is the most frequent cause of disability in the United States, with as many as 50 million Americans on short- or long-term disability leave from work at any one time. As these figures suggest, chronic pain is extremely difficult to treat successfully-it is a complex and baffling phenomenon, poorly understood even in the medical centers devoted to its diagnosis and treatment. In Heal the Pain, Comfort the Spirit Dorene O'Hara, an anesthesiologist with extensive training in pain management and clinical pharmacology, explores treatment techniques developed over many years of studying, treating, and lecturing on chronic pain. She also examines the important contributions made by other clinical professionals and by practitioners of alternative medicine. Combining a general survey of the forms of pain therapy with suggestions for how patients can find the most appropriate treatment plan for themselves, Heal the Pain, Comfort the Spirit provides needed answers for pain sufferers as well as practitioners.

"This book is a 'must have' resource in every physician/clinician practice setting."--Martin Grabois, M.D., Professor of PM&R, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston,TX. Dr. Vasudevan draws upon an accumulated reservoir of clinical expertise to provide readers with an up-to-date and highly readable guide to multidisciplinary pain management. . . . If only this book was available years ago"--Francis J. Keefe, PhD. Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Anesthesiology, Duke University, Durham, NC. This practical volume brings multidisciplinary innovations to the treatment of chronic pain. It argues expertly for the benefits of a biopsychosocial approach over current pain treatments more suited to acute care. The author's insights into the complexity of chronic pain and critiques of common but inconsistent unimodality pain management methods underscore the need for targeted multi-disciplinary pain programs. Among a wealth of useful clinical nuggets, readers will find guidance on adding "virtual" support to a pain management team, details on ways patients can take an active role in dealing with their chronic pain, and the original concept of the "back attack." Included in the coverage: Pain theories and factors behind chronic pain-its application in treatment. Cognitive behavioral coping strategies. Treatments that have questionable or controversial evidence. Evaluation of disability in patients with chronic pain. Creating a virtual multidisciplinary team. Common pain problems: low back pain, complex regional pain syndrome, myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia. Multidisciplinary Pain Management will enhance the work of diverse practitioners, including health and clinical psychologists, family and other primary care physicians, psychiatrists, occupational and physical therapists, and rehabilitation specialists.

Due to the recent explosion of placebo research at many levels the Editors believe that a volume on Placebo would be a good addition to the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology series. In particular, this volume will be built up on a meeting on Placebo which will be held in Tuebingen (Germany) in January 2013, and where the most prominent researchers in this field will present and exchange their ideas. The authors who will be invited to write chapters for this volume will be the very same speakers at this meeting, thus guaranteeing high standard and excellence in the topic that will be treated. The approach of the book is mainly pharmacological, including basic research and clinical trials, and the contents range from different medical conditions and systems, such as pain and the immune system, to different experimental approaches, like in vivo receptor binding and pharmacological/behavioral conditioning. Overall, the volume will give an idea of modern placebo research, of timely concepts in both experimental and clinical pharmacology, as well as of modern methods and tools in neuroscience.

Charuhas V. Thakar, Chirag R. Parikh
R3,650 Discovery Miles 36 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The kidneys participate in all vital processes of the body to maintain overall homeostasis and health. When kidneys are injured during surgical interventions, metabolic and hemodynamic control is disrupted, leading to dysfunction associated with greater mortality, length of hospital stay and cost. Peri-operative Kidney Injury presents the epidemiology, risk factors, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes associated with kidney injury during the peri-operative period. Concepts and principles of care to prevent kidney complications during surgical procedures are provided to equip health care professionals along with strategies to manage acute kidney injury and associated challenges when they occur. Chapters detail diverse surgical settings, ranging from the more common, such as abdominal, cardiac and vascular surgeries, to the intricately complex, including the use of the left ventricular assist device and organ transplants. This practical and comprehensive text blends the evidence-based standards of care with cutting edge advances in the field, while also providing the reader with a peek into innovations on the horizon.

Primum non nocere... The fact that a surgical procedure can leave any kind of pain casts a shadow over this tenet, which is seen as the basis of medical practice and anchor of its principle ethic... It is all the more surprising in that medicine has only paid attention to this paradoxical chronic pain situation for the past few years. Clarifying the knowledge acquired in this field has become all the more urgent for any care-giver today confronted by a legitimate request from patients: Why and how can a surgical procedure, which is supposed to bring relief, leave behind an unacceptable sequela? This is the approach which the contributors to this new subject of major clinical interest invite you to follow as you work your way through this book.
