from the' Master Guide to Drawing Anime' series for beginning anime
artists. Readers will learn how to use simple templates to draw the
head from different angles, bodies of characters from different age
groups and authentic anime hairstyles and fashions. Next, they'll
see, step by step, how to draw dozens of the most popular character
types and the emotions and attitudes that make them compelling.

This is the first major publication on the art and lives of
twentieth-century Fort Worth artists Scott (1942-2011) and Stuart
(1942-2006) Gentling. Prolific modern-day Renaissance men, the
brothers created an extensive body of landscapes; portraits of
regional and national luminaries; historical studies ranging from a
visual reconstruction of the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan to
subjects drawn from the French and American Revolutions; and
natural history illustrations of the flora and fauna of Texas.
Realist painters, they drew inspiration from past masters such as
Jacques-Louis David and John James Audubon, and they corresponded
and collaborated with contemporaries such as Andrew Wyeth and Ed
Ruscha. The Gentling brothers' place within the canon of
twentieth-century American art is established here. Along with 290
images, including 120 plates, the book includes five essays, two by
scholars Erika Doss of the University of Notre Dame and Barbara
Mundy of Fordham University; a trio of Carter museum curators
provide deep analyses of the Gentlings' artistic process, the
output of their fifty-year career, and a chronology of their lives;
plus several brief and incisive takes on specific aspects of the
brothers' multifaceted art and lives are featured throughout.
The profession of sculpture was transformed during the eighteenth
century as the creation and appreciation of art became increasingly
associated with social interaction. Central to this transformation
was the esteemed yet controversial body, the Academie royale de
peinture et de sculpture. In this richly illustrated book, Tomas
Macsotay focuses on the sculptor's life at the Academie, analysing
the protocols that dictated the production of academic art. Arguing
that these procedures were modelled on the artist's study journey
to Rome, Macsotay discusses the close links between working
practices introduced at the Academie and new notions of academic
community and personal sensibility. He explores the bodily form of
the morceau de reception on which the election of new members
depended, and how this shaped the development of academic ideas and
practices. Macsotay also reconsiders the early revolutionary years,
where outside events exacerbated tensions between personal autonomy
and institutional authority. The Profession of sculpture in the
Paris Academie underscores the moral and aesthetic divide
separating modern interpretations of sculpture based on notions of
the individual artistic persona, and eighteenth-century notions of
sociable production. The result is a book which takes sculpture
outside the national arena, and re-focuses attention on its more
subjective role, a narrative of intimate life in a modern world.
