Africa.
For fans of Ann Patchett, Maggie O'Farrell and Emma Stonex comes And Now the Light is Everywhere: a breath-taking mystery and a soaring, beautifully written examination of love in all its guises.
Argyll, 1998. Stories run deep in the MacArthur family, passed from generation to generation. Tales not just of selkies and changelings, but of the lives and deaths of the family themselves. Anna MacArthur has heard how her beautiful grandmother Netta boarded a ship for Canada after the war, leaving behind her young son Donnie, and was never seen again.
Now, fifty years after her disappearance, Anna accidentally pulls a loose thread in the story of Netta's fate, causing the tale of her vanishing to unravel completely. As Anna pieces together a far more disquieting version of events, she is also forced to examine her own memories of her father Donnie's death.
Yet the truth is sometimes bent and buried for a reason. And bringing to light what some have concealed for years may not be free of consequences . . .
This book examines mass marketing techniques in a political rather
than economic context. The authors' thesis remains persuasive:
democratic politics, precisely because it requires mass support for
its legitimation, increases the need for public opinion to be
channelized and focused. This is precisely the task of marketing in
the political process. Increasingly, advanced societies are
involved in symbolic rather than direct forms of struggle. As a
result, management of ideas becomes crucial to both political
survival and economic expansion. Romain Laufer and Catherine
Paradeise argue that public opinion and media formation is built
into the fabric of Western political culture, dating from the
Sophists in ancient Greece through Machiavelli in the aristocratic
baronies of pre-capitalist Europe. With the rise of the
bureaucratic-administrative state in the West, the need for
persuasive public opinion analysis became part of the fabric of the
advanced Western democratic and capitalist nations. The volume
benefits from authors trained and familiar with the traditions of
both the United States and Europe. They are able to consider
contrasts in marketing styles as well as continuities of contents
among advanced nation-states. No simple "how-to" manual, this
bracingly different volume discusses its subject with an easy
command of the philosophical and cultural literatures, as well as
the major classics of economics, sociology, and political science.
Reveals proven solutions for bettering the lives of people with
serious mental illness, their families, and their communities.
Leading scientist and gifted storyteller Rachel A. Pruchno, PhD,
was shocked to encounter misinformation, ignorance, and intolerance
when she sought to help her daughter, newly diagnosed with bipolar
disorder. Turning to the scientific literature, Dr. Pruchno
eventually found solutions, but she realized many others would need
help to understand the highly technical writing and conflicting
findings. In Beyond Madness-part memoir, part history, and part
empathetic guide-Dr. Pruchno draws on her decades as a mental
health professional, her own family's experiences with mental
illness, and extensive interviews with people with serious mental
illness to discuss how individuals live with these illnesses,
including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression.
The book * presents real-world vignettes that vividly describe what
it is like to experience some of the most troubling symptoms of a
severe mental illness * offers practical advice for how
individuals, family members, and communities can help people with a
serious mental illness * explains how people with mental illness
can find competent health care providers, identify treatment
regimens, overcome obstacles to treatment, cope with stigma, and
make decisions * provides insight into programs, such as Crisis
Intervention Training, that can help people undergoing mental
health crisis avoid jail and get the treatment they need * takes
aim at the popular concept of "rock bottom" and reveals why this is
such a harmful and simplistic approach * advocates for
evidence-based care * documents examples of communities that have
embraced successful strategies for promoting recovery * shows that
people with serious mental illnesses can live productive lives
Meticulously researched and engagingly written, Beyond Madness is a
call to action and a promise of hope for everyone who cares about
and interacts with the millions of people who have serious mental
illness. Family members, friends, teachers, police, primary care
doctors, and clergy-people who recognize that something is wrong
but don't know how to help-will find the book's practical advice
invaluable.
Dedicated to the topics of eroticism and sexuality in the visual
production of the medieval and early modern Muslim world, this
volume sheds light on the diverse socio-cultural milieus of erotic
images, on the range of motivations that determined their
production, and on the responses generated by their circulation.
The articles revise what has been accepted as a truism in existing
literature-that erotic motifs in the Islamic visual arts should be
read metaphorically-offering, as an alternative, rigorous
contextual and cultural analyses. Among the subjects discussed are
male and female figures as sexualized objects; the spiritual
dimensions of eroticism; licit versus illicit sexual practices; and
the exotic and erotic 'others' as a source of sensual delight. As
the first systematic study on these themes in the field of Islamic
art history, this volume fills a considerable gap and contributes
to the lively debates on the nature and function of erotic and
sexual images that have featured prominently in broader
art-historical discussions in recent decades.
From ancient times to our modern age western empires have shaped
societies around the world. From trade patterns and migration to
sexuality, race and the environment, empire has touched upon all
aspects of human experience as well as the natural world. A
Cultural History of Western Empires presents historians, and
scholars and students of imperial history with a comprehensive and
interdisciplinary overview of the cultural history of empire
through six highly-illustrated volumes. Contributed to by 52
experts, each offering their overview of a theme applied to a
period in history, each volume includes chapters on war, trade,
natural worlds, labor, mobility, sexuality, resistance and race.
The six volumes cover: 1-- Antiquity (500BCE-800CE); 2-- The Middle
Ages (800-1450); 3-- The Renaissance (1450-1650); 4-- The Age of
Enlightenment (1650-1800); 5-- The Age of Empire (1800-1920); 6--
the Modern Age (1920-2000+) Each volume opens with a series preface
and introduction, then adopts the same thematic structure, enabling
readers to trace one theme throughout history, as well as gaining a
thorough overview of each individual period.
The carole was the principal social dance in France and England
from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and
English medieval literature. However, it has been widely
misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries
and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was
performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds
and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and
outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is
underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional
texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in
moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert
Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history,
choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the
primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate
the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also
in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all
the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical,
lyrical, musical and iconographical.
Consolidating pupils' learning The Exploring maths Home Books
support and consolidate the work carried out in class. Each lesson
has a homework task reinforcing what's been taught in class. Each
homework task reminds pupils what they have learned in the lesson,
so that they can apply it to the questions. Accessible language
ensures that pupils can work without adult support.
It is no surprise that women and men experience biological and
physiological differences fundamentally and throughout the
lifecycle. What is surprising is that faced with such a
self-evident truth, there should be so little consideration to date
of how these differences affect susceptibility to disease and
metabolic response to dietary treatment. Understanding these
differences and developing a gender-based approach focusing on the
specific needs and conditions of women is crucial to achieve
effective nutritional strategies for women's health.
Expanding the knowledge-base regarding sex, nutrition, and
medicine, Optimizing Women's Health through Nutrition presents the
biology, physiology, and metabology unique to women. The book
demonstrates in a practical, accessible manner the scientific
application of this data addressing lifecycle changes, disease
prevention, and treatment. Based on sound research and supported by
extensive references, it begins by describing recent research on
biological and physiological differences and how these differences
translate into varying disease trends between the sexes.
Contributions describe the nutritional needs of women during the
lifecycle, particularly during adolescence, pregnancy and
lactation, premenopause, and menopause and midlife stages. The bulk
of the book addresses each of the common major diseases or
conditions that specifically affect the health of women. It
emphasizes the role of nutrition in disease risk reduction as well
as management and treatment of disease. Specific disease selection
was dictated by those in which women are more vulnerable or have a
higher incidence than men.
The concluding section identifies areas for futureresearch and
strategic areas of investigation for researchers and health
professionals, government regulators, and food industry
professionals involved in creating novel foods that enhance women's
health.

This title offers fresh insights on the so-called 'justice versus
peace' dilemma, examining the challenges and prospects for
promoting both peace and accountability, specifically in African
countries affected by conflict or political violence. Peace versus
Justice? draws on the expertise of many insiders analysts,
individuals who are not only authorities on transitional
accountability processes, but who have participated in them,
whether as legal practitioners or commissioners. While the primary
focus is on processes in Africa, many of the contributors also draw
on lessons from earlier processes elsewhere in the world,
particularly Latin America. The chapters in this volume consider a
wide range of approaches to accountability and peacebuilding. These
include not only domestic courts and tribunals, hybrid tribunals,
or the International Criminal Court, but also truth commissions and
informal or non-state justice and conflict resolution processes.
Taken together, they demonstrate the wealth of experiences and
experimentation in transitional justice processes on the continent.

During the 1740s, literate Russians mostly kept to traditional
forms of written language. Although the linguistic reforms
undertaken by Peter the Great earlier in the century affected
printed secular texts and the imperial administration, these
reforms were less radical than often assumed. This study draws
conclusions based on an analysis that differs from earlier ones.
First of all, the study examines the Russian language during a
comparatively little-known decade of the eighteenth century. In
doing so, it takes into account not only strictly linguistic data,
but also developments in Russian society. Second, the investigation
analyzes sources that are seldom valued for their linguistic
content, thus offering a broader perspective on the Russian
language of the period.
