Confucian Capitalism - Shibusawa Eiichi, Business Ethics, and Economic Development in Meiji Japan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... Confucian Capitalism - Shibusawa Eiichi, Business Ethics, and Economic Development in Meiji Japan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
John H Sagers
R3,929 Discovery Miles 39 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the life story of Shibusawa Eiichi (1840-1931), one of the most important financiers and industrialists in modern Japanese history, as its narrative focal point, this book explores the challenges of importing modern business enterprises to Japan, where the pursuit of profit was considered beneath the dignity of the samurai elite. Seeking to overturn the Tokugawa samurai-dominated political economy after the Meiji Restoration, Shibusawa was a pioneer in introducing joint-stock corporations to Japan as institutions of economic development. As the entrepreneurial head of Tokyo's Dai-Ichi Bank, he helped launch modern enterprises in such diverse industries as banking, shipping, textiles, paper, beer, and railroads. Believing businesses should be both successful and serve the national interest, Shibusawa regularly cautioned against the pursuit of profit alone. He insisted instead on the 'unity of morality and economy' following business ethics derived from the Confucian Analects. A top leader in Japan's business community for decades, Shibusawa contributed to founding the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce, and numerous educational and philanthropic organizations to promote his vision of Confucian capitalism. This volume marks an important contribution to the international debate on the extent to which capitalist enterprises have a responsibility to serve and benefit the societies in which they do business. Shibusawa's story demonstrates that business, government, trade associations, and educational institutions all have valuable roles to play in establishing a political economy that is both productive and humane.

Maren Heidemann, Joseph Lee
R4,397 Discovery Miles 43 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores commercial contract law in scholarship and legal practice, suggests new research agendas and provides a forum for debate of typical issues that might benefit from further attention by scholarship and legislatures. The authors from over ten different jurisdictions take an international and comparative approach. Not confined to EU law it re-opens the debate internationally and seeks to reclaim the wider meaning of European law as rooted in geography and cultural legal heritage. There is a need to focus on commercial contracts in more detail in research and legislation. The transactional approach, the role of recent law reform, including the new French Civil Code, cross-border dealings, substantive contract law in public international law and ICSID arbitration as well as current contractual practices like OEM, CSR, contractual co-operation, sustainability and intra-corporate arbitration contribute to a wider regulatory outlook for commercial transactions.

Ernst Von Kimakowitz, Hanna Schirovsky, Carlos Largacha-Martinez, Claus Dierksmeier
R3,608 Discovery Miles 36 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book demonstrates how principles of a Humanistic Management paradigm are practiced in a variety of industries and regions by businesses of different ownership structures and sizes. What unites these businesses is their commitment to the three stepped approach of Humanistic Management, which is grounded in unconditional respect for the dignity of life, the integration of ethics in management decisions, and active engagement with stakeholders. These businesses are not labeled social enterprises, but operate within the mainstream of competitive markets. However, they do have a deep sense of responsibility towards the communities in which they operate and act accordingly, knowing that sustaining business success over time depends on a value proposition to society at large. The cases featured in this book serve to clarify that businesses can thrive not despite but because they are upholding principles of Humanistic Management. It will be valuable reading for academics working in the field of business ethics, sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Business Ethics and Leadership from an Eastern European, Transdisciplinary Context - The 2014 Griffiths School of Management Annual Conference on Business, Entrepreneurship and Ethics (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Sebastian Vaduva, Ioan S. Fotea, Andrew R Thomas
R3,317 Discovery Miles 33 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book aims to provide insight into the fields of business and leadership by examining the role of ethics in these areas. The papers in this book derive from the 2014 Annual Griffiths School of Management International Conference, organized by Emanuel University of Oradea, Romania, where academics and practitioners interacted and discussed current insights and research in the different dimensions of business ethics and leadership. This resulting book offers empirical and theological research on ethics, business and leadership from a transdisciplinary and knowledge- based context. Since the financial crisis in 2008, the debate on business ethics and leadership has dominated the public sphere at all levels of interest, from grassroots to the elites in educational institutions, governments, businesses and NGOs. Naturally, constructive and transdisciplinary discussions need to take place, with due consideration for the specific context of each situation, so that propositions upon which to build the future can be formulated. These discussions unfold in an ever more intricate world of business, powered by ever more pervasive and intelligent technology and scientific development, all brought together by globalization. In this world, organizations are faced with new and more complex ethical issues in their pursuit to serve clients, gain profits, motivate employees, collaborate with partners and act responsibly towards society and the environment. A wise approach to changing the future is to understand the mistakes of the past, because one must always learn how to overcome past mistakes in order to develop a better future. But a necessary approach to building a better future is looking at the world through a transdisciplinary mindset. This allows us to see the world as a complex whole; it fosters creative interaction between fields of knowledge; it opens doors for knowledge and innovation flows across disciplines; and it allows the tackling of complex problems and situations. Given the current context of our world, this is an approach that we ought to pursue. Featuring contributions from academics, researchers, scholars and practitioners from across the globe, this book will be of great interest for students and practitioners in the fields of business, leadership and ethics.

Capitalism, Corporations and the Social Contract - A Critique of Stakeholder Theory (Hardcover, New): Samuel F. Mansell Capitalism, Corporations and the Social Contract - A Critique of Stakeholder Theory (Hardcover, New)
Samuel F. Mansell
R2,227 Discovery Miles 22 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In whose interests should a corporation be run? Over the last thirty years the field of 'stakeholder theory' has proposed a distinctive answer: a corporation should be run in the interests of all its primary stakeholders - including employees, customers, suppliers and financiers - without contradicting the ethical principles on which capitalism stands. This book offers a critique of this central claim. It argues that by applying the political concept of a 'social contract' to the corporation, stakeholder theory in fact undermines the principles on which a market economy is based. The argument builds upon an extensive review of the stakeholder literature and an analysis of its philosophical foundations, particularly concerning the social contract tradition of John Rawls and his predecessors. The book concludes by offering a qualified version of Milton Friedman's shareholder theory as a more justifiable account of the purpose of a corporation.

Corporate Social Responsibility, Private Law and Global Supply Chains (Hardcover): Andreas Ruhmkorf Corporate Social Responsibility, Private Law and Global Supply Chains (Hardcover)
Andreas Ruhmkorf
R3,171 Discovery Miles 31 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Ruhmkorf's thought-provoking book has a powerful message: that we cannot rely on the discretion of business to promote CSR voluntarily. Through the devastating example of the Rana Plaza disaster, Ruhmkorf shows that we must get beyond business rhetoric and develop a multidimensional approach to the regulation of global supply chains. Whilst recognising the existing limitations of private law, his book highlights the potential contribution of private law to the development and promotion of CSR. The task is not an easy one, but by adopting a pluralistic approach to corporate law and by employing contract law, consumer law and tort law more dynamically, English private law could fill many of the regulatory gaps. The message is urgent and strong. This is a must read book for anyone concerned with CSR, supply chains and the law.' - Charlotte Villiers, University of Bristol, UK 'This book fills an important gap in discussions of international CSR standards. It is all very well to say that states must protect and companies should respect human rights, but when breaches of human rights do occur, it is remedies that matter. Ruhmkorf explores the limits of private law avenues for seeking such remedies. In so doing, he provides a valuable understanding of obstacles to fuller realization of the three-pillared ''Protect, Respect and Remed'' Framework of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. - Alice de Jonge, Monash University, Australia Current debate surrounding social responsibility has neglected to fully comprehend the important role of national private law in achieving socially responsible conduct in business. This insightful book demonstrates how private law makes a significant contribution to the promotion of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and how it could be improved. Based on the analysis of four substantive areas (company law/corporate governance, contract law, consumer law and tort law), this inclusive book covers a full range of issues that are important for CSR. These include directors duties, corporate reporting, the incorporation of CSR policies into the supply chain, consumer rights and the tortious liabilities of companies. The book discerns how national private law in the home state of multinational enterprises can legally affect their socially responsible conduct worldwide. Andreas Ruhmkorf demonstrates that private law already promotes and, with certain amendments, could better promote CSR in the regulation of global supply chains. The book's findings are applied to the collapse of the Rana Plaza Building in Bangladesh, which offers a supportive empirical insight. As an up-to-date and comprehensive survey of CSR and global supply chains, this work will benefit researchers and practitioners interested in the fields of CSR, private law, international law, political economy, international labor standards and sustainable supply chains.

Ethicmentality - Ethics in Capitalist Economy, Business, and Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Michela Betta Ethicmentality - Ethics in Capitalist Economy, Business, and Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Michela Betta
R2,724 R1,866 Discovery Miles 18 660 Save R858 (31%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ethicmentality is an innovative book. It blends ethics with mentality to capture the interdependence of ethical life and social life creatively. The book is also innovative because of the way this interdependence is explored. By focusing on practical ethical behavior in today's economy, business, and society, Michela Betta has advanced an understanding of ethics freed from the burden of moral theory. By introducing a new type of analysis this book also contributes to methodological innovation. Familiar issues are revisited through the notion of ethicmentality. Capitalist economy is presented in terms of a mentality embedded in society, culture, and politics. Government is revealed as mentality about how to govern economically through market freedom rather than human rights. The rise of the financial economy is described as challenging the traditional capitalist mentality of equal opportunities. A money mentality around debts and owing is perceived as having replaced credit and owning, and the rise of corporation managers as having destroyed the old mentality of ownership. Ethicmentality shows the potential of constructive critique from economic, business, and society perspectives. It also breaches traditional limits by developing the idea of ethical capital and entrepreneurial ethics. Ethical thinking is infused with the Aristotelian notion of virtues and moderation to reflect about modern work. Ethicmentality helps us see the complexity of social and personal life. Given the pervasive nature of mentality and ethics' focus on individual deliberation, ethicmentality represents their productive combination, a new blend for ethical and social analysis.

An enlightening read for researchers of social business and sustainability, this book analyses perceptions towards success, and the desire to solve environmental problems, underlining a fundamental aspect of the entrepreneur's personal value structure.

Social Responsibility and Sustainability - How Businesses and Organizations Can Operate in a Sustainable and Socially... Social Responsibility and Sustainability - How Businesses and Organizations Can Operate in a Sustainable and Socially Responsible Way (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Walter Leal Filho
R4,402 Discovery Miles 44 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book comprehensively describes social responsibility and sustainable development, with contributions from scientists and representatives from industry working in the field. The papers are innovative, cross-cutting and many share practice-based experiences, some of which may be replicable elsewhere. Prepared by the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP) and the World Sustainable Development Research and Transfer Centre (WSD-RTC), it reiterates the current need to promote social responsibility. Social responsibility and sustainable development are two different concepts, whose integration over the years has led to significant advances in the way enterprises see and perceive their operations. It is not only about policies or steps taken to meet legal requirements, but is also about social equality and environmental accountability, also bearing in mind the links with eco-efficiency, innovation, and the health and wellbeing of workers. According to ISO 26000, social responsibility is the responsibility of an organisation for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behaviour that: a) contributes to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of society b) takes into account the expectations of stakeholders c) is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behaviour d) is integrated throughout the organisation and practised in its relationships. But even though the relations between social responsibility and sustainability are strong, it is still necessary to encourage organisations to adhere to, or at least follow the principles of sustainable development in their operations, giving something back to the community. As such, there is a need for a better understanding of how social responsibility is related to sustainable development, and of the identification of processes, methods and tools that may help the integration of these two important elements. There is also a real need to showcase successful examples of how to structure behaviour and institutional practice in line with the sustainability challenges we face today.
