The Riddles of Harry Potter - Secret Passages and Interpretive Quests (Hardcover): Shira Wolosky The Riddles of Harry Potter - Secret Passages and Interpretive Quests (Hardcover)
Shira Wolosky
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Handbooks, guides, and articles on the Harry Potter books have been produced, but there is as yet no sustained discussion of the series as a literary work. Shira Wolosky shows here that the Harry Potter books take part in a rich literary tradition, including allegorical double meanings, mirror images among characters, psychological explorations of family dynamics, political and social critique, and complex moral questions. This book draws readers into deeper meanings of Harry Potter, arguing that the books launch and pursue interpretive quests in an ongoing effort to understand patterns and their attendant meanings, implications, and consequences.

Bedtime Story (Hardcover): Chloe Hooper Bedtime Story (Hardcover)
Chloe Hooper
R429 Discovery Miles 4 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the best-selling author of The Tall Man and The Arsonist, a personal tale about death, life and the enchantment of stories. With illustrations by Anna Walker. Let me tell you a story... When Chloe Hooper's partner is diagnosed with a rare and aggressive illness, she has to find a way to tell their two young sons. By instinct, she turns to the bookshelf. Can the news be broken as a bedtime tale? Is there a perfect book to prepare children for loss? Hooper embarks on a quest to find what practical lessons children's literature-with its innocent orphans and evil adults, magic, monsters and anthropomorphic animals-can teach about grief and resilience in real life. As she discovers, 'the right words are an incantation, a spell of hope for the future.' From the Brothers Grimm to Frances Hodgson Burnett and Tolkien and Dahl-all of whom suffered childhood bereavements-she follows the breadcrumbs of the world's favourite authors, searching for the deep wisdom in their books and lives. Both memoir and manual, Bedtime Story is stunningly illustrated by the New York Times award-winning Anna Walker. In an age of worldwide uncertainty, here is a profound and moving exploration of the dark and light of storytelling. 'Exquisitely beautiful. This book is an act of love.' Anna Funder, author of All That I Am and Stasiland 'Chloe Hooper has a formidable talent to take complex stories and ideas and truths, and to distil them into a language of direct and powerful beauty. This is a story of grief and of patience, of hope and acceptance. It is also a reminder of the solace that books give us, and of how the imaginary worlds we dive into as children remain with is for all our lives, of how they guide us into adulthood and maturity. There is a quiet courage and strength in this book. It is both gentle and uncompromising, a love letter to family and to literature that is bracingly unsentimental. I was profoundly moved, and profoundly grateful.' Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap and Damascus

The Children's Book Business - Lessons from the Long Eighteenth Century (Hardcover): Lissa Paul The Children's Book Business - Lessons from the Long Eighteenth Century (Hardcover)
Lissa Paul
R4,168 Discovery Miles 41 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In The Children's Book Business, Lissa Paul constructs a new kind of book biography. By focusing on Eliza Fenwick's1805 product-placement novel, Visits to the Juvenile Library, in the context of Marjorie Moon's 1990 bibliography, Benjamin Tabart's Juvenile Library, Paul explains how twenty-first century cultural sensibilities are informed by late eighteenth-century attitudes towards children, reading, knowledge, and publishing. The thinking, knowing children of the Enlightenment, she argues, are models for present day technologically-connected, socially-conscious children; the increasingly obsolete images of Romantic innocent and ignorant children are bracketed between the two periods. By drawing on recent scholarship in several fields including book history, cultural studies, and educational theory, The Children's Book Business provides a detailed historical picture of the landscape of some of the trade practices of early publishers, and explains how they developed in concert with the progressive pedagogies of several female authors, including Eliza Fenwick, Mary Wollstonecraft, Anna Barbauld, Maria Edgeworth, and Ann and Jane Taylor. Paul's revisionist reading of the history of children's literature will be of interest to scholars working in eighteenth-century studies, book history, childhood studies, cultural studies, educational history, and children's literature.

With its companion volume, this book effectively provides descriptions and evaluations of award-winning American fiction for children over the last 125 years. The compilers provide clear, insightful, and critical evaluations. Despite its title, the bibliography lists fiction for both children and young adults. . . . These two volumes, likely to become reference mainstays, are recommended for academic libraries that support children's and young adult literature or teacher education, and for public libraries and media centers. "Choice"

This volume is a fine addition to the reference works of children's literature and should be considered as a first purchase by those studying children's literature in-depth and in particular by those preparing booktalks. "ARBA "

These two volumes will be useful to anyone concerned with children's literature--librarians, teachers, and students. "Reference Books Bulletin"

Children's Literature - New Approaches (Paperback, 2004 ed.): K. Lesnik-Oberstein Children's Literature - New Approaches (Paperback, 2004 ed.)
K. Lesnik-Oberstein
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book documents the experiences of 15 mothers whose children labeled learning disabled attended public schools during the last four decades. Despite the right of parents to participate in educational decision-making, these mothers describe the challenge of exercising that right. In candid and compelling narratives, mothers speak to the language of experts, conflicts in shared decision-making, devaluation of "mother knowledge," and the influence of race, class, and gender. The constancy of issues suggests that this landmark legislation may, in fact, have engendered minimal changes in the lives of mothers and their children.

Emotional States, Attention, and Working Memory - A Special Issue of Cognition & Emotion (Hardcover): Nazanin Derakhshan,... Emotional States, Attention, and Working Memory - A Special Issue of Cognition & Emotion (Hardcover)
Nazanin Derakhshan, Michael Eysenck
R2,537 Discovery Miles 25 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Special Issue is concerned with the effects of three emotional states (positive affect; anxiety; and depression) on performance. More specifically, the contributors focus on the potential mediating effects of attention and of executive processes of working memory. The evidence discussed suggests that anxiety and depression both impair the executive functions of shifting and inhibition, in part due to task-irrelevant processing (e.g., rumination; worry). In contrast, positive affect seems to enhance the shifting function and does not impair the inhibition function. The complicating role of motivational intensity is also discussed, as are implications for future research.

Alternating Narratives in Fiction for Young Readers - Twice Upon a Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Perry Nodelman Alternating Narratives in Fiction for Young Readers - Twice Upon a Time (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Perry Nodelman
R3,276 Discovery Miles 32 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is about the implications of novels for young readers that tell their stories by alternating between different narrative lines focused on different characters. It asks: if you make sense of fiction by identifying with one main character, how do you handle two or more of them? Do novels with alternating narratives diverge from longstanding conventions and represent a significant change in literature for young readers? If not, how do these novels manage to operate within the parameters of those conventions? This book considers answers to these questions by means of a series of close readings that explore the structural, educational and ideological implications of a variety of American, British, Canadian and Australian novels for children and for young adults.

African American Adolescent Female Heroes - The Twenty-First-Century Young Adult Neo-Slave Narrative (Hardcover): Melanie A.... African American Adolescent Female Heroes - The Twenty-First-Century Young Adult Neo-Slave Narrative (Hardcover)
Melanie A. Marotta
R2,773 Discovery Miles 27 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the wake of the second wave of the Black Lives Matter movement, inequalities and disparities were brought to light across the publishing industry. The need for more diverse, representative young adult literature gained new traction, resulting in an influx of young adult speculative fiction featuring African American young women. While the #BlackGirlMagic movement inspired a wave of positive African American female heroes in young adult fiction, it is still important to acknowledge the history and legacy of enslavement in America and their impact on literature. Many of the depictions of young Black women in contemporary speculative fiction still rely on stereotypical representations rooted in American enslavement. African American Adolescent Female Heroes: The Twenty-First-Century Young Adult Neo-Slave Narrative investigates the application of the neo-slave narrative structure to the twenty-first-century young adult text. Author Melanie A. Marotta examines texts featuring a female, adolescent protagonist of color, including Orleans, Tankborn, The Book of Phoenix, Binti, and The Black God's Drums, as well as series like the Devil's Wake series, Octavia E. Butler's Parable series, and the Dread Nation series. Taken together, these chapters seek to analyze whether the roles for adolescent female characters of color are changing or whether they remain re-creations of traditional slave narrative roles. Further, the chapters explore if trauma, healing, and activism are enacted in this genre.

Representations of Technology in Science Fiction for Young People (Hardcover): Noga Applebaum Representations of Technology in Science Fiction for Young People (Hardcover)
Noga Applebaum
R4,165 Discovery Miles 41 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this new book, Noga Applebaum surveys science fiction novels published for children and young adults from 1980 to the present, exposing the anti-technological bias existing within a genre often associated with the celebration of technology. Applebaum argues that perceptions of technology as a corrupting force, particularly in relation to its use by young people, are a manifestation of the enduring allure of the myth of childhood innocence and result in young-adult fiction that endorses a technophobic agenda. This agenda is a form of resistance to the changing face of childhood and technology's contribution to this change. Further, Applebaum contends that technophobic literature disempowers its young readers by implying that the technologies of the future are inherently dangerous, while it neglects to acknowledge children's complex, yet pleasurable, interactions with technology today. The study looks at works by well-known authors including M.T. Anderson, Monica Hughes, Lois Lowry, Garth Nix, and Philip Reeve, and explores topics such as ecology, cloning, the impact of technology on narrative structure, and the adult-child hierarchy. While focusing on the popular genre of science fiction as a useful case study, Applebaum demonstrates that negative attitudes toward technology exist within children's literature in general, making the book of considerable interest to scholars of both science fiction and children's literature.

Wild Things - The Joy of Reading Children's Literature as an Adult (Paperback): Bruce Handy Wild Things - The Joy of Reading Children's Literature as an Adult (Paperback)
Bruce Handy
R469 R393 Discovery Miles 3 930 Save R76 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An irresistible, nostalgic, insightful-and "consistently intelligent and funny" (The New York Times Book Review)-ramble through classic children's literature from Vanity Fair contributing editor (and father of two) Bruce Handy. The dour New England Primer, thought to be the first American children's book, was first published in Boston in 1690. Offering children gems of advice such as "Strive to learn" and "Be not a dunce," it was no fun at all. So how did we get from there to "Let the wild rumpus start"? And now that we're living in a golden age of children's literature, what can adults get out of reading Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight Moon, or Charlotte's Web and Little House on the Prairie? A "delightful excursion" (The Wall Street Journal), Wild Things revisits the classics of every American childhood, from fairy tales to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and explores the back stories of their creators, using context and biography to understand how some of the most insightful, creative, and witty authors and illustrators of their times created their often deeply personal masterpieces. Along the way, Handy learns what The Cat in the Hat says about anarchy and absentee parenting, which themes are shared by The Runaway Bunny and Portnoy's Complaint, and why Ramona Quimby is as true an American icon as Tom Sawyer or Jay Gatsby. It's a profound, eye-opening experience to re-encounter books that you once treasured decades ago. A clear-eyed love letter to the greatest children's books and authors from Louisa May Alcott and L. Frank Baum to Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Mildred D. Taylor, and E.B. White, Wild Things is "a spirited, perceptive, and just outright funny account that will surely leave its readers with a new appreciation for childhood favorites" (Publishers Weekly).

British Children's Literature and Material Culture - Commodities and Consumption 1850-1914 (Hardcover): Jane Suzanne... British Children's Literature and Material Culture - Commodities and Consumption 1850-1914 (Hardcover)
Jane Suzanne Carroll
R2,948 Discovery Miles 29 480 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The 'golden age' of children's literature in the late 19th and early 20th century coincided with a boom in the production and trade of commodities. The first book-length study to situate children's literature within the consumer culture of this period, British Children's Literature and Material Culture explores the intersection of children's books, consumerism and the representation of commodities within British children's literature. In tracing the role of objects in key texts from the turn of the century, Jane Suzanne Carroll uncovers the connections between these fictional objects and the real objects that child consumers bought, used, cherished, broke, and threw away. Beginning with the Great Exhibition of 1851, this book takes stock of the changing attitudes towards consumer culture - a movement from celebration to suspicion - to demonstrate that children's literature was a key consumer product, one that influenced young people's views of and relationships with other kinds of commodities. Drawing on a wide spectrum of well-known and less familiar texts from Britain, this book examines works from Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There and E. Nesbit's Five Children & It to Christina Rossetti's Speaking Likenesses and Mary Louisa Molesworth's The Cuckoo Clock. Placing children's fiction alongside historical documents, shop catalogues, lost property records, and advertisements, Carroll provides fresh critical insight into children's relationships with material culture and reveals that even the most fantastic texts had roots in the ordinary, everyday things.

Reading the Child in Children's Literature - An Heretical Approach (Hardcover): David Rudd Reading the Child in Children's Literature - An Heretical Approach (Hardcover)
David Rudd
R3,295 Discovery Miles 32 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

David Rudd takes a lively and controversial look at the critical representation of the child in children's literature, arguing for a more open and eclectic approach: one that celebrates the diverse power, appeal and possibilities of children's literature. Drawing on psychoanalytically informed perspectives, Rudd shows how theory can be both exciting and liberating. He offers fresh and stimulating close readings of key texts, ranging from established classics - such as Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Winnie-the-Pooh - to more modern works, including novels (Peter Pan in Scarlet and The Children's Book) and picture books (Zoo, The Missing Piece and Where the Wild Things Are). Sophisticated yet highly approachable, this is an essential read for anyone with an interest in the study of children's literature.

Children's Literature and the Fin de Siecle (Hardcover, New): Roderick McGillis Children's Literature and the Fin de Siecle (Hardcover, New)
Roderick McGillis
R2,692 Discovery Miles 26 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The close of a century invites both retrospection and prognostication. As a period of transition, it also brings a sense of uncertainty, finality, and apocalypticism. These feelings stem from various events, such as political turmoil, scientific advancements, and social change. As might be expected, literature reflects such changes and the feelings they engender. But perhaps more surprisingly, children's literature is especially sensitive to such matters, and fiction for children often struggles with dark and unpleasant issues. This book examines fin de siecle tensions in 19th- and 20th-century children's literature from around the world. Each chapter is written by an expert contributor, and the volume ranges over a disparate variety of topics. These include poetry, series books, pacifist fiction, gender issues, religion and literature, eco-criticism, minority experiences, humor and the Holocaust, fantasy and science fiction, and computer culture. In exploring these issues in relation to children's literature, the contributors reveal the shifting nature of our values and the world in which we live. Global in nature, the chapters look at children's literature from such places as Germany, Holland, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.

Keith O'Sullivan, Padraic Whyte
R3,928 Discovery Miles 39 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides scholars, both national and international, with a basis for advanced research in children's literature in collections. Examining books for children published across five centuries, gathered from the collections in Dublin, this unique volume advances causes in collecting, librarianship, education, and children's literature studies more generally. It facilitates processes of discovery and recovery that present various pathways for researchers with diverse interests in children's books to engage with collections. From book histories, through bookselling, information on collectors, and histories of education to close text analyses, it is evident that there are various approaches to researching collections. In this volume, three dominant approaches emerge: history and canonicity, author and text, ideals and institutions. Through its focus on varied materials, from fiction to textbooks, this volume illuminates how cities can articulate a vision of children's literature through particular collections and institutional practices.

Gulliver's Travels - Into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts (Hardcover): Jonathan Swift Gulliver's Travels - Into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts (Hardcover)
Jonathan Swift
R765 Discovery Miles 7 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Gulliver's Travels, published first in 1726 and again in 1735, is the most well-known work of Irish satirist Jonathan Swift. It is the story of Lemuel Gulliver, who captains a ship and sails the world, stopping in odd locations (such as Lilliput, Brobdingnag, and Glubbdubdrib) and getting into all sorts of trouble. During his adventures, he is held captive by a tiny race of people no taller than six inches, becomes an exhibition for giants, and meets a race of horses (Houyhnhnms) who rule humans (Yahoos). The entire work is a parody of the "travel" genre of literature (which was immensely popular at the time) and a satire on human nature in general. This classic, which includes all four of Gulliver's adventures, is a delight for readers young and old. JONATHAN SWIFT (1667-1745) was an Irish poet, essayist, satirist, political pamphleteer (for both Whigs and Tories), and cleric. Swift is the most well-known prose satirist in the English language, renowned for his works Gulliver's Travels, A Tale of a Tub, and An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, among others. He was a master of two styles of satire: Horatian and Juvenalian, and originally published all his works under pseudonyms.

The Making of the Modern Child - Children's Literature in the Late Eighteenth Century (Hardcover): Andrew O'Malley The Making of the Modern Child - Children's Literature in the Late Eighteenth Century (Hardcover)
Andrew O'Malley
R3,883 Discovery Miles 38 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Making of the Modern Child explores how the concept of childhood in the Victorian era was constructed through the ideological work performed by children's literature, as well as pedagogical writing and medical literature of the era. The author ties the evolution of the idea of 'the child' to the growth of the middle class, which used the figure of 'the child' as a symbol in its various calls for social reform.

Literature and Propaganda (Hardcover): A.P. Foulkes Literature and Propaganda (Hardcover)
A.P. Foulkes
R5,120 Discovery Miles 51 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First Published in 2002. It is easy to see that we are living in a time of rapid and radical social change. It is much less easy to grasp the fact that such change will inevitably affect the nature of those disciplines that both reflect our society and help to shape it. Yet this is nowhere more apparent than in the central field of what may, in general terms, be called literary studies. 'New Accents' is intended as a positive response to the initiative offered by such a situation. Each volume in the series will seek to encourage rather than resist the process of change. To stretch rather than reinforce the boundaries that currently define literature and its academic study.
