Serenade to Music is sublime - one of the most stunningly beautiful
musical creations of the 20th century. This choral meditation on
the nature of music and its power to enrapture is a setting of text
from Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. This tender and
much-loved work was composed in 1938 in honour of Sir Henry Wood.
It was written for 16 soloists and orchestra but may also be sung
by four soloists and chorus, or by mixed-voice chorus. This
beautifully presented edition includes an introduction by Michael
Kennedy. Also available for full orchestra without choir.
This gentle song is taken from the song cycle 'Songs for Seven
Storeys', which Bob Chilcott wrote to celebrate the opening of the
New Evelina Children's Hospital on London's South Bank. With a
singable, folksy tune and an atmospheric piano part, this song has
wide appeal. Orchestral material for 'Songs for Seven Storeys' is
available on hire from the OUP Hire Library, or appropriate
overseas agent.
Wilberg arranged this familiar hymn for the funeral of US President
Gerald Ford. To distinguish this arrangement from the other known
settings of O God our help in ages past, Wilberg chose a much lower
key for a warmer, more comforting sound. Also, in the last verse,
the melody is passed to the tenors and altos, which allows the
outer voices to develop and further broaden the texture. Whether
performing this work with piano accompaniment or with orchestra, it
will certainly rejuvenate this traditional favorite.
for SATB, organ, and optional strings A gentle melody and lush
harmonic backdrop create a stunning musical setting of a text by
eminent American hymn writer, Thomas Troeger. One Gift sheds new
light on the gifts that the Magi bring to the Christ child. The
strings add an attractively profound dimension to the work. Score
and string parts on are sale (978-0-19-387034-5)
for SATB unaccompanied This is a lush setting of three poems by
Sara Teasdale who, in 1918, won the precursor to the Pulitzer Prize
for Poetry. This piece would make a welcome addition to the
repertoire of community choirs.
for SATB unaccompanied These short motets (Bread of Heaven and
Bread of the World) are accessible by any church choir. The text
makes them appropriate for any time during the church year, but
they could find a special place during the Lenten season.
for SA and piano This attractive setting of a text by Christina
Rossetti combines a shapely melody with a gentle, rippling piano
accompaniment. Ideal for Easter concerts and services.
for solo voice, SATB choir, flute, and keyboard or guitar or
chamber orchestra This heartwarming song, setting words by the
composer, has a rich, satisfying melody that befits the sentiment
of the text: music is a gift that enriches the soul and lasts a
lifetime.
