Philip Schaff's The Creeds of Christendom is a massive set,
originally published in three volumes and here reproduced across
five volumes, cataloging and explaining the many different creeds
from the myriad Christian denominations. The differences in belief
between Calvinists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians, for example, can
often be subtle, so a thorough examination of the particulars as
well as an explanation for how those different beliefs result in a
different worldview is necessary. Volume One: Part II covers: . the
Catechism of Geneva AD 1546 and 1541 . the Reformed Confessions of
France and Netherlands . the Reformed Confessions of Germany . the
Reformed Confessions of Bohemia, Poland, and Hungary . the Anglican
Articles of Religion . the Presbyterian Confessions of Scotland .
the Westminster Standards . the Creeds of Modern Evangelical
Denominations. (See Volume One: Part I for the Table of Contents
for this volume.) Swiss theologian PHILIP SCHAFF (1819-1893) was
educated in Germany and eventually came to the United States to
teach at the German Reformed Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
He wrote a number of books and hymnals for children, including
History of the Christian Church and The Creeds of the Evangelical
Protestant Churches.
With this new lectionary commentary series, Westminster John
Knox offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market
today. When complete, the twelve volumes of the series will cover
all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with
movable occasions, such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and
All Saints' Day.
For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief
essays--one each on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and
homiletical challenges of the text. This gives preachers sixteen
different approaches to the proclaimation of the Word on any given
occasion.
The editors and contributors to this series are world-class
scholars, pastors, and writers representing a variety of
denominations and traditions. And while the twelve volumes of the
series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary,
each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that
nonlectionary preachers, as well as teachers and students, may make
use of its contents.
In this updated edition of the bestselling classic, author John
Eldredge reminds men they need adventure in their lives . . . in their
work, in their love, and their spiritual lives. He reveals how God
designed men to be dangerous. Simply look at the dreams and desires
written in the heart of every boy: to be a hero, to be a warrior, and
to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men today have
abandoned these dreams and desires—aided by a Christianity that feels
like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder
that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and
bored to death.
In this provocative six-session video study (DVD/digital video
downloads sold separately), John Eldredge explains how God wants to
heal these deep wounds from earlier years that take away a man's
confidence and—in some cases—his masculinity. He shows that deep within
the heart of every man is a longing for a battle to fight, an adventure
to live, and a beauty to rescue—because that is how God created him. It
is time for the church to reclaim these wounded warriors. It is time to
give men permission to be what God designed them to be—dangerous,
passionate, alive, and free!
Sessions include:
- The Heart of a Man
- The Wound
- A Battle to Fight
- An Adventure to Live
- A Beauty to Rescue
- A Band of Brothers

This volume remains the most definitive study and discussion of the
rite of confirmation in the Lutheran Church. In recent years there
has been a renewed interest in offering Holy Communion to children
at an earlier age, as was the practice in the Lutheran Church up to
the time when Pietism and then Rationalism elevated the rite of
Confirmation to a near-sacramental nature. This volume was
commissioned by The Missouri Synod's Board of Parish Education and
addressed the concerns then that remain today: how best to offer
formal instruction in the faith to the church's young people in
such a manner that it helps them grow in the grace of their Lord
Jesus Christ and into Christian maturity.
My wife (Kathy) and I were both brought up in Christian homes. We
were taught from an early age that "God loves us and He has a plan
for each one of us." Therefore, we had a good foundation starting
out. God has blessed me by putting Kathy and me in the same church
one Saturday night. It was love at first sight We were married not
long afterwards and forty years later, here we are writing a book.
God gave me the inspiration for this book over eleven years ago,
but the manuscript perished in an unfortunate house fire. So, it is
all in His timing. God has blessed us with two fine boys, who are
now married to wonderful girls. Our children have blessed our lives
with some of life's greatest treasures...our grandchildren. We have
five of these blessings, whom we love and adore. Besides writing,
God has blessed us with another great adventure. Volunteer
Missions. God has placed before us a love of sharing the good news,
at home and in other parts of the world. Kathy and I have been
blessed to travel to Romania, Mexico, Alaska and Montana on
short-term mission trips. We will be traveling to Guatemala in the
near future, sharing the message of God's love. We hope and pray
that you will be blessed with joy, laughter and yes, even sadness
in reading this book as much as Kathy and I have in writing it. God
Bless
In this work the author moves away from youth-centered catechesis
toward a catechetical method that gets at the heart of faith
formation for ALL generations, storytelling. In the
African-American storytelling tradition, both the storyteller and
listener are important-they embody the story. What happens in the
story exchange process is the discovery of connections. The
author's method of African-American storytelling, My Story-Your
Story, brings to life the Christian story through our shared
experiences. Intergenerational catechesis invites us to see
ourselves and one another across time-through eyes that are young,
middle-aged, and elderly. Based on an understanding of family,
intergenerational catechesis moves away from the domestic church as
a starting point for growing in faith to the community as a
starting point. Where the domestic church focuses on those who live
in the household, intergenerational catechesis focuses on everyone
in the Church community: single persons, divorced persons,
widows/widowers, teens, young adults, pre-school and elementary
children, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. In highlighting
our connections we are better able to see ourselves and one another
differently. When we see ourselves and others transformed faith is
revitalized.
