Survey of London: Whitechapel - Volumes 54 and 55 (Hardcover): Peter Guillery Survey of London: Whitechapel - Volumes 54 and 55 (Hardcover)
Peter Guillery
R4,369 Discovery Miles 43 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Survey of London returns to the East End to chronicle Whitechapel, shedding new light on this widely misunderstood district In these volumes, the Survey of London returns to the East End to chronicle Whitechapel, covering Aldgate to Mile End Green, and Brick Lane to Wellclose Square. The name Whitechapel-one of London's best known-is highly evocative, carrying dark, even mythic associations. These are set aside to present new histories of all the area's sites and buildings, those standing and many that have gone, in districts that have been repeatedly rebuilt. Abutting the City of London, Whitechapel has, since medieval times, housed commerce and many varied industries. Enriched by centuries of immigration, this area has been "global" for as long as that word has denoted the world and, amidst widespread poverty, some of London's great institutions have been founded here. In the midst of these landmarks, Whitechapel has seen recent transformation. These volumes bear historical witness with hundreds of superb new photographs and meticulous architectural drawings illustrating detailed accounts of topographical development in accessible prose. They will be an invaluable resource for historians, planners, residents, and the wider public. Distributed for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

The Design of Urban Manufacturing (Paperback): Robert N. Lane, Nina Rappaport The Design of Urban Manufacturing (Paperback)
Robert N. Lane, Nina Rappaport
R1,108 Discovery Miles 11 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

American cities are rediscovering the economic and social value of urban manufacturing. However, urban manufacturing is often invisible and poorly understood in terms of urban design, architecture, and policy. The Design of Urban Manufacturing brings a multidisciplinary approach to a new complex reality that urban manufacturing now sits squarely at the intersection of research, education, and neighborhood revitalization. Using cases studies from across North America and beyond, this book presents innovative approaches not only to the design of districts and buildings, but to the design of policy as well: the special roles that governments, local development corporations, and not-for-profit organizations all have to play in supporting manufacturing. This book presents current models for working neighborhoods where factories enable fine-grained, mixed-use communities and face-to-face contact while creatively solving the very real problems of goods movement and functional buildings. Design guidelines and policy recommendations are calibrated to different types of production districts. The Design of Urban Manufacturing is the essential resource for policy makers, designers, and students in urban design, planning, and urban and economic development.

Learning from Informal Settlements in Iran - Models, Policies, Processes, and Outcomes (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Mahyar Arefi Learning from Informal Settlements in Iran - Models, Policies, Processes, and Outcomes (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Mahyar Arefi
R2,427 Discovery Miles 24 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores the tenacity of Iran's informal settlements against the backdrop of the World Bank's USD 80 million loan for physical upgrading. Arefi seeks to identify and unravel the distinctive models, policies, processes, and outcomes associated with it, and explains why-despite obvious challenges-informal settlements remain popular in Iran, and also how understanding them in a broader theoretical context helps rectify existing redevelopment policies in order to develop more effective ones.

Urban Smellscapes - Understanding and Designing City Smell Environments (Hardcover, New): Victoria Henshaw Urban Smellscapes - Understanding and Designing City Smell Environments (Hardcover, New)
Victoria Henshaw
R5,209 Discovery Miles 52 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We see the city, we hear the city, but above all: we smell the city. Scent has unique qualities: ubiquity, persistence, and an unparalleled connection to memory, yet it has gone overlooked in discussions of sensory design. What scents shape the city? How does scent contribute to placemaking? How do we design smell environments in the city? Urban Smellscapes makes a notable contribution towards the growing body of literature on the senses and design by providing some answers to these questions and contributing towards the wider research agenda regarding how people sensually experience urban environments. It is the first of its kind in examining the role of smell specifically in contemporary experiences and perceptions of English towns and cities, highlighting the perception of urban smellscapes as inter-related with place perception, and describing odour's contribution towards overall sense of place. With case studies from factories, breweries, urban parks, and experimental smell environments in Manchester and Grasse, Urban Smellscapes identifies processes by which urban smell environments are managed and controlled, and gives designers and city managers tools to actively use smell in their work.

The Sociotechnical Constitution of Resilience - A New Perspective on Governing Risk and Disaster (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... The Sociotechnical Constitution of Resilience - A New Perspective on Governing Risk and Disaster (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Sulfikar Amir
R3,914 Discovery Miles 39 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book considers the concept of resilience in a global society where coping with the consequence and long term impact of crisis and disaster challenges the capacity of communities to bounce back in the event of severe disruption. Catastrophic events such as the 9.11 terrorist attack, the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the volcano eruption in Central Java entailed massive devastation on physical infrastructures, and caused significant social and economic damage. This book considers how the modern sociotechnological system facilitating human activity defines how societies survive and whether a crisis will be short-lived or prolonged. Drawing on the concept of sociotechnical resilience, this book closely examines a range of events North America, Asia, Australia, and Europe. By presenting the successes and failures of sociotechnical resilience, it offers important insights and practical lessons to build better and comprehensive understandings of resilience in a real-world setting, significantly contributing to the study of disaster resilience.

Smart Cities - Governing, Modelling and Analysing the Transition (Hardcover, New): Mark Deakin Smart Cities - Governing, Modelling and Analysing the Transition (Hardcover, New)
Mark Deakin
R4,359 Discovery Miles 43 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Smart city development has emerged a major issue over the past 5 years. Since the launch of IBM's Smart Planet and CISCO's Smart Cities and Communities programmes, their potential to deliver on global sustainable development targets have captured the public's attention. However, despite this growing interest in the development of smart cities, little has as yet been published that either sets out the state-of-the-art, or which offers a less than subjective, arm's length and dispassionate account of their potential contribution. This book brings together cutting edge research and the findings from technical development projects from leading authorities within the field to capture the transition to smart cities. It explores what is understood about smart cities, playing particular attention on the governance, modelling and analysis of the transition that smart cities seek to represent. In paving the way for such a representation, the book begins to account for the social capital of smart communities and begins the task of modelling their embedded intelligence through an analysis of what the "embedded intelligence of smart cities" contributes to the sustainability of urban development. This innovative book offers an interdisciplinary perspective and shall be of interest to researchers, policy analysts and technical experts involved in and responsible for the planning, development and design of smart cities. It will also be of particular value to final year undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in Geography, Architecture and Planning.

Geology of the Northwest African Continental Margin (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982): U. V. Rad, K.... Geology of the Northwest African Continental Margin (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982)
U. V. Rad, K. Hinz, M. Sarnthein, E. Seibold
R2,890 Discovery Miles 28 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Northwest African and the conjugate Northeast American con- tinental margins provide excellent examples of mature passive continental margins which record in their thick sediment cover the birth and evolution of the Atlantic Ocean Basins during the past 200 million years. Due to a dense net of single- and multichannel seismic reflection lines, numerous Deep Sea Drill- ing Project (DSDP) sites and petroleum exploration wells, and the well-known onshore geology, the Northwest African margin is one of the bes"t-documen ted margins of the world. A particu- lar advantage of this margin is that its coastal basins are well exposed and accessible for detailed stratigraphic studies and onshore-offshore correlations, whereas the Mesozoic-Ceno- zoic marginal basins off eastern North America underlie only the present continental shelf and slope. During the past decade, the Northwest African margin was stu- died in great detail, particularly by the Woods Hole Oceano- graphic Institution, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory, Imperial College London, Shell Internationale Petroleum Maat- schappij (Den Haag), Kiel University, and the Bundesanstalt fiir Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe (BGR) at Hannover. A num- ber of important synthesis papers summarized these results; e. g. , Summerhayes et al. , 1971; Dillon and Sougy, 1974; Seibold and Hinz, 1974; Uchupi et al. , 1976; Lehner and de Ruiter, 1977 (all quoted in the references of Seibold, this Vol. ).

The Routledge Handbook of Designing Public Spaces for Young People - Processes, Practices and Policies for Youth Inclusion... The Routledge Handbook of Designing Public Spaces for Young People - Processes, Practices and Policies for Youth Inclusion (Hardcover)
Janet Loebach, Sarah Little, Adina Cox, Patsy Eubanks Owens
R6,362 Discovery Miles 63 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Designing Public Spaces for Young People is a thorough and practical resource for all who wish to influence policy and design decisions in order to increase young people's access to and use of public spaces, as well as their role in design and decision-making processes. The ability of youth to freely enjoy public spaces, and to develop a sense of belonging and attachment to these environments, is critical for their physical, social, cognitive, and emotional development. Young people represent a vital citizen group with legitimate rights to occupy and shape their public environments, yet they are often driven out of public places by adult users, restrictive bylaws, or hostile designs. It is also important that children and youth have the opportunity to genuinely participate in the planning of public spaces, and to have their needs considered in the design of the public realm. This book provides both evidence and tools to help effectively advocate for more youth-inclusive public environments, as well as integrate youth directly into both research and design processes related to the public realm. It is essential reading for researchers, design and planning professionals, community leaders, and youth advocates.

Local Governments and Climate Change - Sustainable Energy Planning and Implementation in Small and Medium Sized Communities... Local Governments and Climate Change - Sustainable Energy Planning and Implementation in Small and Medium Sized Communities (Paperback, 2010 ed.)
Maryke van Staden, Francesco Musco
R5,195 Discovery Miles 51 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Global warming is changing the world as we know it. Climate change can have catastrophic impacts in numerous cities across the world. It is time for us to react - quickly and effectively. The European Community (EC) has been leading the fight against climate change, making it one of its top priorities. We have introduced the most ambitious targets of their kind, known as the "20/20/20 by 2020" initiative within the "Climate Action and Renewable Energy Package." As a result, European Member States have taken on a commitment to curb their CO emissions by at least 20% by 2020. 2 These targets are indeed commendable; however, they are only the start if we are to avoid the consequences of global warming. Whilst top level coordination from the European Institutions and Member State governments is vital, the role of mitigating and adapting to climate change at local level must not be forgotten. In fact, here cities, regions and their citizens play a significant a role. It is therefore vital they become directly involved in the climate change challenge. The European Commission therefore launched in 2008 a new initiative, the Covenant of Mayors, which brings together a network of European mayors in a voluntary effort to go beyond the European Union's already ambitious targets. Half of our greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) are created in and by cities.

In the Skin of the City - Spatial Transformation in Luanda (Hardcover): Antonio Tomas In the Skin of the City - Spatial Transformation in Luanda (Hardcover)
Antonio Tomas
R2,069 Discovery Miles 20 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With In the Skin of the City, Antonio Tomas traces the history and transformation of Luanda, Angola, the nation's capital as well as one of the oldest settlements founded by the European colonial powers in the Southern Hemisphere. Drawing on ethnographic and archival research alongside his own experiences growing up in Luanda, Tomas shows how the city's physical and social boundaries-its skin-constitute porous and shifting interfaces between center and margins, settler and Native, enslaver and enslaved, formal and informal, and the powerful and the powerless. He focuses on Luanda's "asphalt frontier"-the (colonial) line between the planned urban center and the ad hoc shantytowns that surround it-and the ways squatters are central to Luanda's historical urban process. In their relationship with the state and their struggle to gain rights to the city, squatters embody the process of negotiating Luanda's divisions and the sociopolitical forces that shape them. By illustrating how Luanda emerges out of the continual redefinition of its skin, Tomas offers new ways to understand the logic of urbanization in cities across the global South.

Housing Contemporary Ireland - Policy, Society and Shelter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007): Michelle... Housing Contemporary Ireland - Policy, Society and Shelter (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2007)
Michelle Norris, Declan Redmond
R4,055 Discovery Miles 40 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

During the past decade, Ireland 's economic growth has attracted international attention. This book analyses the consequences of that growth on housing and serves as a primer to other countries on the complexities of delivering sustainable housing solutions in the face of economic success. It introduces key housing developments and also reports on the findings of the latest research on the transformation of the sector in the past decade.

Transcultural Cities - Border-Crossing and Placemaking (Paperback): Jeffrey Hou Transcultural Cities - Border-Crossing and Placemaking (Paperback)
Jeffrey Hou
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transcultural Cities uses a framework of transcultural placemaking, cross-disciplinary inquiry and transnational focus to examine a collection of case studies around the world, presented by a multidisciplinary group of scholars and activists in architecture, urban planning, urban studies, art, environmental psychology, geography, political science, and social work. The book addresses the intercultural exchanges as well as the cultural trans-formation that takes place in urban spaces. In doing so, it views cultures not in isolation from each other in today's diverse urban environments, but as mutually influenced, constituted and transformed. In cities and regions around the globe, migrations of people have continued to shape the makeup and making of neighborhoods, districts, and communities. For instance, in North America, new immigrants have revitalized many of the decaying urban landscapes, creating renewed cultural ambiance and economic networks that transcend borders. In Richmond, BC Canada, an Asian night market has become a major cultural event that draws visitors throughout the region and across the US and Canadian border. Across the Pacific, foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong transform the deserted office district in Central on weekends into a carnivalesque site. While contributing to the multicultural vibes in cities, migration and movements have also resulted in tensions, competition, and clashes of cultures between different ethnic communities, old-timers, newcomers, employees and employers, individuals and institutions. In Transcultural Cities Jeffrey Hou and a cross-disciplinary team of authors argue for a more critical and open approach that sees today's cities, urban places, and placemaking as vehicles for cross-cultural understanding.

The Urban Sociology Reader (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Jan Lin, Christopher Mele The Urban Sociology Reader (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Jan Lin, Christopher Mele
R1,660 Discovery Miles 16 600 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

The urban world is an exciting terrain for investigating the central institutions, structures and problems of the social world and how they have transformed through the last 200 years. This Reader comprises sections on urban social theory, racial and social difference in the city, culture in everyday life, culture and the urban economy, globalization and transnational social relations and the regulation of urban space.

Providing an essential resource for students of urban studies, this book brings together important but, till now, widely dispersed writings. Editorial commentaries precede each entry; introducing the text, demonstrating its significance, and outlining the issues surrounding its topic, whilst the associated bibliography enables deeper investigations.

The Ecology of River Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1986): Bryan R. Davies, Keith F. Walker The Ecology of River Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 1986)
Bryan R. Davies, Keith F. Walker
R7,781 Discovery Miles 77 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large."

Urban Landscape Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Giovanni Maciocco Urban Landscape Perspectives (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Giovanni Maciocco
R2,620 Discovery Miles 26 200 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The articles are by scholars who have a particular interest in and experience of the city project at various operative scales. They include theoretical reflections on the landscape as an eminently project-like figure. The book describes new methods and approaches dealing with the contemporary environment, whether it is from the point of view of the city or the landscape.

Architecture & Design versus Consumerism - How Design Activism Confronts Growth (Paperback, New): Ann Thorpe Architecture & Design versus Consumerism - How Design Activism Confronts Growth (Paperback, New)
Ann Thorpe
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The mentality that consumerism and economic growth are cure-alls is one of the biggest obstacles to real sustainability, but any change seems impossible, unthinkable. Our contemporary paradox finds us relying for our well being on consumer-driven economic growth that we actually can t afford not in environmental, economic or social terms. Although architecture and design have long been seen as engines for consumerism and growth, increasing numbers of designers are concerned about the problems resulting from growth. But designers face a paradox of their own; in scenarios of sustainable consumption, where people consume or build significantly less, what will be left for designers to do?

This book, informed by recent research into the viability of a "steady state" economy, sets an agenda for addressing the designer s paradox of sustainable consumption. The agenda includes ways that architecture and design can help transition us towards a new kind of economy that prioritizes real wellbeing rather than economic growth. Packed with examples and illustrations, the book argues that taking action, or activism, is an important but so far underexplored way for architects and designers to confront consumerism.

The first chapters explore how economic growth and consumerism shape and are shaped by the professions of architecture, product, and landscape design and how we can understand the problem of consumerism as four main challenges that designers are already addressing. The book maps out the main issues surrounding the development of metrics that designers and others can use to measure wellbeing, instead of simply measuring economic growth. The second half of the book looks at how design activism works and its connection to growth and consumerist issues. These chapters examine how activist practices are financed, highlight five specific methods that designers use in working for social change, and investigate the power of these methods. The book concludes with a consideration of what design s role might be in a "post-growth" society.

Reviving Critical Planning Theory - Dealing with Pressure, Neo-liberalism, and Responsibility in Communicative Planning... Reviving Critical Planning Theory - Dealing with Pressure, Neo-liberalism, and Responsibility in Communicative Planning (Paperback, New)
Tore Oivin Sager
R1,532 Discovery Miles 15 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discussing some of the most vexing criticism of communicative planning theory (CPT), this book goes on to suggest how theorists and planners can respond to it. Looking at issues of power, politics and ethics in relation to planning, this book is for both critics and advocates of CPT, with lessons for all.

With severe criticisms being raised against CPT, the need has arisen to systematically think through what responsibilities planning theorists might have for the end-uses of their theoretical work. Offering inventive proposals for amending the shortcomings of this widely adhered planning method, this book reflects on what communicative planning theorists and practitioners can and should do differently.

The Territorial Future of the City (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Giovanni Maciocco The Territorial Future of the City (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)
Giovanni Maciocco
R3,986 Discovery Miles 39 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The volume brings together contributions by leading scholars and young academics with experience in the urban potential of the territory in situations not necessarily linked to the dense metropolis, its compact form or to city sprawl. What brings these scholars together is their common reflection on this central theme, though from varied disciplinary and experimental backgrounds. They offer new forms of representing social and spatial processes of the contemporary society.

Planning and Knowledge - How New Forms of Technocracy Are Shaping Contemporary Cities (Hardcover): Mike Raco, Federico Savini Planning and Knowledge - How New Forms of Technocracy Are Shaping Contemporary Cities (Hardcover)
Mike Raco, Federico Savini
R2,184 Discovery Miles 21 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book uses a broad international perspective to examine the different landscapes of knowledge driving contemporary urban change, as historically established systems of regulation and control are being subject to unprecedented pressures from multiple directions. Its authors reflect on the shift in power relations between expert and local cultures in planning processes, examining its disruptive effect on the traditional separation between public, private, and voluntary sectors.

Shaping the City to Come - Rethinking Modern Architecture and Town Planning in England, c. 1934-51 (Hardcover): Deborah Lewittes Shaping the City to Come - Rethinking Modern Architecture and Town Planning in England, c. 1934-51 (Hardcover)
Deborah Lewittes
R3,641 Discovery Miles 36 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study reassesses modern architecture and town planning in mid-twentieth-century England, highlighting ideas and debates that were in circulation as modernist ideals gradually took root. The book reveals an architectural culture that was serious, active, and visionary, with impact that extended into the postwar years. Through close studies of specific works and writings, the author acknowledges the importance of the international context of modern architecture as it intersected with the variety of narratives that defined English modernism, such as national identity, the New Empiricism, and the picturesque, taking into account the large community of emigre architects who settled in England with the approach of World War II, as well as a more general dissemination of international style forms and theories from continental Europe. The book places familiar figures such as Berthold Lubetkin and Ernoe Goldfinger, as well as projects such as Tecton's Penguin Pool and the Festival of Britain's "Live Architecture" Exhibition, in new light, presenting a rich picture of the modern architectural climate in England. The study draws attention to the debates, proposals, and processes that fed into the development of modernist, urban-minded, and forward-looking architectural ideals.

From Understanding to Action - Sustainable Urban Development in Medium-Sized Cities in Africa and Latin America (Paperback,... From Understanding to Action - Sustainable Urban Development in Medium-Sized Cities in Africa and Latin America (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004)
Marco Keiner, Christopher Zegras, Willy A Schmid, Diego Salmeron
R2,649 Discovery Miles 26 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Hans van Ginkel Rector, United Nations University The challenges of the world's future are linked to the growing share of the global population that will reside in urban areas. UN projections indicate that by 2030 the world's urban population share will rise to 60 percent. Of the two billion added to the global population, 99 percent will be added to the urban areas of the world. Of this number, 95 percent will be in countries of the developing world. As most people will live in urban areas we had better work to build and organize them as both attractive and less resource consuming places. That is, to promote sustainable urban development is to promote the creation of dense human settlements that are livable and have reduced their impacts on larger scale ecosystems. While much attention has been focused on the "mega-cities," those with a population of over 10 million, the amount of people living in these places will remain almost constant while the smaller and medium size cities will be the great absorbers of the world's urban population. Indeed, it is predicted that while the absolute number of people that will live in urban centers of 10 million or more will increase from approximately 263 to 375 million between 2000 and 20 IS, their share of the total urban population will only increase from 9. 2 percent to 9. 8 percent, a 6. 34 percent increase.
