Eco-Art Therapy in Practice (Paperback): Amanda Alders Pike Eco-Art Therapy in Practice (Paperback)
Amanda Alders Pike
R1,007 Discovery Miles 10 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Eco-Art Therapy in Practice is uplifting, optimistic, and empowering while outlining cost-effective, time efficient, and research-based steps on how to use nature in session to enhance client engagement and outcomes. Dr. Pike employs her background and credentials as a certified educational leader and board-certified art therapist to walk readers through establishing ecologically-based practices- such as growing art materials using hydroponics regardless of facility constraints. Each chapter is aligned with the continuing education requirements for art therapy board certification renewal to make its relevance clear and to orient the book for future training program integration. Appendices feature clinical directives in easy-to-follow, one-page protocols which encourage readers to consider client needs when applying methods, along with intake forms to bolster real-world application. This text will help clinicians and educators to employ eco-art therapy in practice, in turn empowering their clients and conveying an inclusive message of respect- respect for self, others, community, and the world.

Terror, Love and Brainwashing - Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems (Paperback, 2nd edition): Alexandra Stein Terror, Love and Brainwashing - Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Alexandra Stein
R909 Discovery Miles 9 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explains how people can be radically manipulated by extreme groups and leaders to engage in incomprehensible and often dangerous acts through psychologically isolating situations of extreme social influence. These methods are used in totalitarian states, terrorist groups and cults, as well as in controlling personal relationships. Illustrated with compelling stories from a range of cults and totalitarian systems, Stein's book defines and analyses the common identifiable traits that underlie these groups, emphasizing the importance of maintaining open yet supportive personal networks. Using original attachment theory-based research this book highlights the dangers of closed, isolating relationships and the closed belief systems that justify them, and demonstrates the psychological impact of these environments, ending with evidence-based recommendations to support an educational approach to awareness and prevention. Featuring a foreword by John Horgan, the new edition has been fully updated to include recent work on political extremism and radicalization and totalitarian systems, as well as the recent highly publicized NXIVM case. Terror, Love and Brainwashing, second edition is essential reading for professionals, policy makers, legal professionals, educators and cult survivors and their families themselves.

Clinical Approaches to Adult Development or Close Relationships and Socioeconomic Development (Hardcover): Michael L. Commons,... Clinical Approaches to Adult Development or Close Relationships and Socioeconomic Development (Hardcover)
Michael L. Commons, Jack Demick, Carl Goldberg
R2,728 Discovery Miles 27 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is one of the first to concentrate on positive growth and development in a clinical arena, rather than loss and pathology. In contrast to the general theories and cross-sectional studies of existing adult developmental research, much of this volume looks at the whole-life level of development of adults through case studies. The book unites three compatible approaches to the study of adult development. The first considers the development of whole life. The second approach examines behavior during certain periods in adults' lives by combining clinical and developmental stage perspectives. The third approach examines periods of life following the work of Erikson, Levinson, and Vaillant. The editors of this volume believe that these three approaches form, in their synergy, a comprehensive and multifaceted approach to uniquely difficult problems of late adolescence and early adulthood. It is the unification of these three approches that makes this book unique in its field.

A Personal Journey Through Psychotherapy - A Case Study Revisited (Paperback): Susan M Fereday A Personal Journey Through Psychotherapy - A Case Study Revisited (Paperback)
Susan M Fereday
R628 Discovery Miles 6 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a personal account of the enduring value of an appropriate psychotherapeutic intervention, and is set within the author's lifespan to date. It is also a unique view of how it feels to be the subject of a published case study. Following a long period of resistance to the therapeutic process, a direct channel to the author's unconscious is established via the art of the written word. It is a first person, chronological account of the psychological signposts that relentlessly point the author toward an unavoidable therapeutic encounter, one that will ultimately have the strength to contain her frightening experience of mental disturbance. The reader is afforded the opportunity to watch the story unfold, and to draw their own academic conclusions. Some of the psychological processes are presented in 'real' time, and will help to illustrate the link between experience, theory and practice in psychotherapy.

Nana
R3,623 Discovery Miles 36 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While scholarship in lesbian/gay studies, queer studies, and studies of gender and sexuality has had an enormous impact on medieval studies, little attention has been paid thus far to women who chose to live according to same-sex affectivity and desire. General treatments of homosexuality in the Middle Ages have assumed that little can be said on the subject. The contributors explore the many ways that lesbian love and desire may have been articulated and represented in the medieval period.

Beyond Therapeutic Culture in Latin America - Hybrid Networks in Argentina and Brazil (Hardcover): Piroska Csuri, Mariano Ben... Beyond Therapeutic Culture in Latin America - Hybrid Networks in Argentina and Brazil (Hardcover)
Piroska Csuri, Mariano Ben Plotkin, Nicolas Viotti
R3,563 R2,962 Discovery Miles 29 620 Save R601 (17%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

By focusing on quantitative and qualitative research in Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, this book expands on the notion of "therapeutic culture." Usually considered a global phenomenon disseminated from North to South, and associated to "modern" forms of "psychologized" subjectivity, "therapeutic culture" has become a key notion to understanding contemporary culture. However, this path-breaking research, grounded in a bottom-up perspective that follows specific therapeutic narratives, shows that the concept of the "therapeutic" should be extended to encompass a diversity of practices, both "secular" and "religious," "modern" and "traditional," that are deemed as therapeutic by the actors involved, although they are overlooked as such by most of the current literature. Pentecostal and Afro-Brazilian religions as well as New Age practices coexist and interact with "conventional" therapeutic techniques such as Psychoanalysis, conforming complex and hybrid therapeutic networks associated to different (also hybrid) forms of subjectivity. Although the book draws upon two cases from the "Global South," its theoretical conclusions are applicable to the analysis of the realm of the therapeutic at large. The book is aimed at university students (both graduate and undergraduate) and at the general public interested in the notion of the therapeutic and, specifically, in Latin American culture.

Enhancing Cognitive Fitness in Adults - A Guide to the Use and Development of Community-Based Programs (Hardcover, 2011 ed.):... Enhancing Cognitive Fitness in Adults - A Guide to the Use and Development of Community-Based Programs (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Paula Hartman-Stein, Asenath La Rue
R3,093 Discovery Miles 30 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Late life is characterized by great diversity in memory and other cognitive functions. Although a substantial proportion of older adults suffer from Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, a majority retain a high level of cognitive skills throughout the life span. Identifying factors that sustain and enhance cognitive well-being is a growing area of original and translational research. In 2009, there are as many as 5.2 million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease, and that figure is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. One in six women and one in 10 men who live to be at least age 55 will develop Alzheimer's disease in their remaining lifetime. Approximately 10 million of the 78 million baby boomers who were alive in 2008 can expect to develop Alzheimer's disease. Seventy percent of people with Alzheimer's disease live at home, cared for by family and friends. In 2008, 9.8 million family members, friends, and neighbors provided unpaid care for someone with Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia. The direct costs to Medicare and Medicaid for care of people with Alzheimer's disease amount to more than $148 billion annually (from Alzheimer's Association, 2008 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures). This book will highlight the research foundations behind brain fitness interventions as well as showcase innovative community-based programs to maintain and promote mental fitness and intervene with adults with cognitive impairment. The emphasis is on illustrating the nuts and bolts of setting up and utilizing cognitive health programs in the community, not just the laboratory.

C.K. Leong, R.M. Joshi
R4,325 Discovery Miles 43 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

It was during a pleasant and warm (both literally and figuratively) two- week period in October, 1991 that a number of researchers, scholars and c1inicians from diverse lands gathered at the beautiful Chateau de Bonas, near Toulouse, France to discuss psychological, neuropsychological and neurolinguistic aspects of reading and writing disorders. The occasion for the serious disputations of theories, research findings and c1inical appli- cations was the Advanced Study Institute (ASI) under the auspices of the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). There was much sharing of mutual experiences, and considerable debate on some issues. There were also friendly exchanges, 'international' ping-pong, tennis matches, and bicyc1e races, and even some convivial- ity akin to that of a c1ass reunion with members telling their stories of yesterday and visions of tomorrow. All these serious scientific disputations and the friendly exchanges would not have been possible without the major assistance from NATO and other institutions and individuals. We wish to express our deep appre- ciation to Dr. L. v. da Cunha ofNATO Scientific Affairs Division, Dr. Tilo Kester and Mrs. Barbara Kester of the International Transfer of Science and Technology (ITST) for their active support and substantial assistance throughout the Advanced Study Institute; Mr. Charles Stockman and his staff of the Chateau de Bonas for looking after our stay there; Christi Martin and Xi-Wu Feng of Oklahoma State University, and the University of Saskatchewan generally for facilitating our work.

Rosemary Hale

This book integrates the traditional chakra model, which provides a map-like tool for how psycho-emotional content interacts with the physical body, with current evidence-based psychological practice. Animal Killer - Transmission of War Trauma From One Generation to the Next (Paperback): Vamik D Volkan Animal Killer - Transmission of War Trauma From One Generation to the Next (Paperback)
Vamik D Volkan
R692 Discovery Miles 6 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A psychoanalytic process from its beginning to its termination is described to illustrate crucial technical issues in the treatment of individuals with narcissistic personality organization and the countertransference manifestations such patients stimulate in the analyst. The subject of this book exhibited cruelty to confirm and stabilize his grandiosity. His internal world was a "reservoir" of the deposited image of his father figure, an individual most severely traumatized during World War II. The patient was given the task to be a mass-"killer" of animals instead of being a hunted one. This book most clearly illustrates how the transgenerational transmission of trauma takes place and how the impact of war continues in future generations. The book also provides an understanding of a special kind of psychological motivation that directs a person to use weapons for mass killing. In this era of pluralism in psychoanalysis, providing the story of a psychoanalytic case in its duration opens ways for comparison and discussion of technique and can be used as a teaching tool.

The Beloved Ego - Foundations of the New Study of the Psyche (Hardcover): Wilhelm Stekel The Beloved Ego - Foundations of the New Study of the Psyche (Hardcover)
Wilhelm Stekel
R4,017 Discovery Miles 40 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Wilhelm Stekel was an Austrian physician and psychologist and one of Freud's earliest followers. A prolific writer, this book originally published in 1921, was considered by the translator 'the best general introduction of its author to the English public', containing as is does many of his central ideas. Although the author had already fallen out with him by this time, in the preface to this book, he acknowledges Freud's significance to the field and says he regards his 'Psycho-Analysis as being a step towards a new psycho-therapy'.
