Rural and Other Medically Underserved Populations, An Issue of Nursing Clinics of North America, Volume 50-3 (Hardcover): JoAnn... Rural and Other Medically Underserved Populations, An Issue of Nursing Clinics of North America, Volume 50-3 (Hardcover)
JoAnn S. Oliver
R1,689 Discovery Miles 16 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This issue will address health care issues and clinical implications of rural and other medically underserved priority populations. The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality identified priority populations to include rural residents, racial and ethnic minorities, low income groups, women, children, older adults, and other individuals who may require chronic care. The editors identified a need for articles focusing on priority populations to help further understand health implications of health disparities among specific populations. A main focus is on identifying useful clinically focused strategies to address racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic differences that are relevant and influence overall healthcare, access, and quality of life. The articles will provide clinicians and other consumers of Nursing Clinics of North America with a diverse and unique perspective on an array of clinically relevant and population focused topics. Some example topics included are: Tailoring interactive multimedia to improve diabetes self- management; Addressing mental and physical health among older adults; Using mobile devices to access evidence- based information in a rural setting; Identifying family history and development of risk factors for diabetes among underserved preschool children; Addressing smoking cessation, Cancer screening issues, Cardiovascular health, and Obesity.

Labors of Love - Nursing Homes and the Structures of Care Work (Hardcover): Jason Rodriquez Labors of Love - Nursing Homes and the Structures of Care Work (Hardcover)
Jason Rodriquez
R2,856 Discovery Miles 28 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Every day for the next twenty years, more than 10,000 people in the United States will turn 65. With life expectancies increasing as well, many of these Americans will eventually require round-the-clock attention--and we have only begun to prepare for the challenge of caring for them. In Labors of Love, Jason Rodriquez examines the world of the fast-growing elder care industry, providing a nuanced and balanced portrait of the day-to-day lives of the people and organizations that devote their time to supporting America's aging population. Through extensive ethnographic research, interviews with staff and management, and analysis of internal documents, Rodriquez explores the inner workings of two different nursing homes--one for-profit and one non-profit--to understand the connections among the administrative regulations, the professional requirements, and the type of care provided in both types of facilities. He reveals a variety of challenges that nursing home care workers face day to day: battles over the budget; the administrative hurdles of Medicaid and Medicare; the employees' struggle to balance financial stability and compassionate care for residents. Yet, Rodriquez argues, nursing home workers give meaning and dignity to their work by building emotional attachments to residents and their care. An unprecedented study, Labors of Love brings new insight into the underlying structures of a crucial and expanding sector of the American health care system.

Well Child Care in Infancy - Promoting Readiness for Life (Hardcover): William B. Pittard III Well Child Care in Infancy - Promoting Readiness for Life (Hardcover)
William B. Pittard III
R710 Discovery Miles 7 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Well child care is designed to promote optimal health status for children, including school and life success. This preventive care includes anticipatory guidance; continuity of care; assessment of growth and development; screening procedures for vision, hearing, dental, and cognitive development; and immunizations. Anticipatory guidance provides parental health education, counseling, and reassurance. The vast majority of Medicaid-insured children receive fewer than the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended number of well child visits in the preschool years, and a disproportionate number of children have poor health and lack school readiness. With little empirical data available indicating clinical effectiveness other than for immunizations, the AAP recommendations for well child care were originally based on consensus expert opinion, and more than three decades later, documentation of effectiveness remained unavailable. This information gap led policymakers to question the value of well child care and limited incentive to correct its underuse. Only in the last five years have experimental findings indicated an association between well child care and both more cost efficient health care and increased school readiness. Awareness of these findings by insurance company and Medicaid administrators is limited. The purpose for this book is to increase awareness by all stakeholders of the empirically determined clinical effectiveness of well child care. The short-term goal is to facilitate increased utilization of well child care, with a longer term goal of improved child health and life success.

R1,067 Discovery Miles 10 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 4th edition of Finnie's Handling the Young Child with Cerebral Palsy at Home has been updated to reflect the current practices of today. It aims to help parents assist their child with cerebral palsy (CP) towards achieving the most comfortable independence in all activities. It is hoped to show how, by using typical parenting skills, which involve guiding and exposing a child to develop through challenging experiences, the child with CP will also develop. The book is also intended to help professionals and other carers new to this field understand, support and encourage young children with CP and their families.Over the years since the first edition of this book was written ideas on appropriate therapies have changed and developed. Similarly opinion on early intervention has changed and the method of delivery of service has in some places moved from centralisation to home-based or community provision. The emphasis of this new edition however remains on a holistic approach to the child's needs seeing the difficulties in relation to the overall development of the child as a unique person from childhood to adulthood. Decision-Making in Midwifery Practice (Paperback, New): Maureen D. Raynor, Jayne E. Marshall, Amanda Sullivan Decision-Making in Midwifery Practice (Paperback, New)
Maureen D. Raynor, Jayne E. Marshall, Amanda Sullivan
R971 Discovery Miles 9 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book looks at a broad perspective of decision making and each chapter focuses on a specific aspect related to making crucial decisions. Following an initial introduction the book explores the concept of autonomy and the many factors that influence autonomous practise. The role of knowledge in decision making, using evidence to inform decisions, as well as different approaches to decision making are also examined - including the traditional or rational approach, decision analysis and the development of professional judgement. Dilemmas arise when decisions are made and therefore ethical decision making is an important component of this book. Management decisions may be different from those related to giving specific care to women, hence one chapter focuses on making management decisions. Emphasis is also placed on the role of the midwife in helping women make their own decisions, the role of reflection in enhancing the decisions midwives make and the support midwives can receive from their Supervisor of Midwives. Flowcharts explain and facilitate the decision-making process. A very practical approach to decision-making in midwifery, with contributions from midwives who have considerable experience in this area Provides guidelines on how to achieve successful autonomous midwifery practice, enabling theory to be effectively applied to practice Includes coverage of management roles and decision-making as well as clinical scenarios, offering frameworks and flowcharts to guide the inexperienced Suggests different approaches to making difficult decisions

Rosalie A. Kane, Robert L. Kane, Richard C. Ladd
R1,596 Discovery Miles 15 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Long-term care in the United States has taken the nursing home as its benchmark, but the monetary, social, and psychological costs of nursing home care are all too high. This book challenges the current dominance of nursing homes as the principal institution of long-term care. It offers a series of alternative models where both services and housing can be provided in a way that allows long-term consumers to enjoy dignified, "normal" lifestyles.

The authors start with the premise that long-term care is designed to assist people who lack the capacity to function fully independently. In addition, the authors argue, no disabled person of any age should be required to forsake his/her humanity in exchange for care. The book rejects the artificial dichotomy between social and medical care, asserting that both play important roles in the psychological and physical well-being of long-term care patients. The book considers the need for competent and compassionate medicine and discusses the methods for improving both its coordination of care and its effectiveness. The book redefines the meaning of safety and protection in long-term care, and how this goal can be accomplished without sacrificing quality of living.

As the new millennium and the aging of baby boomers approaches, more creative approaches to providing better long-term care are required. This volume outlines a useful framework for the provision of effective and humane community-based programs that are both feasible and affordable. The Heart of Long-Term Care is intended for geriatricians, public health professionals, family physicians, and nurses who care for elderly patients.

R1,407 Discovery Miles 14 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Globalization is reshaping the field of health promotion practice. In this innovative study, the authors outline health promotion's traditional concerns and argue that 'a policy of glocalization' (thinking globally, acting locally) can succeed in establishing health equality and achieving empowerment individually, locally, nationally and globally. Drawing on international examples across Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, this study analyses economic policies and their link to health, particularly in relation to the developing world. Globalization affects health in varied ways and this book examines the competing ways in which 'global health' has been framed in public policy, concluding by revealing how health promoters can respond to globalization's new challenges.
