K Harron
R2,125 Discovery Miles 21 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A comprehensive compilation of new developments in data linkage methodology The increasing availability of large administrative databases has led to a dramatic rise in the use of data linkage, yet the standard texts on linkage are still those which describe the seminal work from the 1950-60s, with some updates. Linkage and analysis of data across sources remains problematic due to lack of discriminatory and accurate identifiers, missing data and regulatory issues. Recent developments in data linkage methodology have concentrated on bias and analysis of linked data, novel approaches to organising relationships between databases and privacy-preserving linkage. Methodological Developments in Data Linkage brings together a collection of contributions from members of the international data linkage community, covering cutting edge methodology in this field. It presents opportunities and challenges provided by linkage of large and often complex datasets, including analysis problems, legal and security aspects, models for data access and the development of novel research areas. New methods for handling uncertainty in analysis of linked data, solutions for anonymised linkage and alternative models for data collection are also discussed. Key Features : Presents cutting edge methods for a topic of increasing importance to a wide range of research areas, with applications to data linkage systems internationally Covers the essential issues associated with data linkage today Includes examples based on real data linkage systems, highlighting the opportunities, successes and challenges that the increasing availability of linkage data provides Novel approach incorporates technical aspects of both linkage, management and analysis of linked data This book will be of core interest to academics, government employees, data holders, data managers, analysts and statisticians who use administrative data. It will also appeal to researchers in a variety of areas, including epidemiology, biostatistics, social statistics, informatics, policy and public health.

de-testing and de-grading schools - Authentic Alternatives to Accountability and Standardization (Paperback, New edition): Joe... de-testing and de-grading schools - Authentic Alternatives to Accountability and Standardization (Paperback, New edition)
Joe Bower, Paul L Thomas
R976 Discovery Miles 9 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A century of education and education reform, along with more than three decades of high-stakes testing and accountability, reveals a disturbing paradox: education has a steadfast commitment to testing and grading. This commitment persists despite ample research, theory, and philosophy revealing the corrosive consequences of both testing and grading in an education system designed to support human agency and democratic principles. This revised edited volume brings together a collection of updated and new essays that confronts the failure of testing and grading. The book explores the historical failure of testing and grading; the theoretical and philosophical arguments against testing and grading; the negative influence of tests and grades on social justice, race, class, and gender; and the role that they play in perpetuating a deficit perspective of children. The chapters fall under two broad sections. Part I, Degrading Learning, Detesting Education: The Failure of High-Stake Accountability in Education, includes essays on the historical, theoretical, and philosophical arguments against testing and grading. Part II, De-Grading and De-Testing in a Time of High-Stakes Education Reform, presents practical experiments in de-testing and de-grading classrooms for authentic learning experiences.

Next, many fundamental methods in optimization are described and analyzed, including: gradient and accelerated gradient methods for unconstrained optimization of smooth (especially convex) functions; the stochastic gradient method, a workhorse algorithm in machine learning; the coordinate descent approach; several key algorithms for constrained optimization problems; algorithms for minimizing nonsmooth functions arising in data science; foundations of the analysis of nonsmooth functions and optimization duality; and the back-propagation approach, relevant to neural networks.

Coping with Uncertainty - Petty Traders in Post-Soviet Russia (Hardcover, New edition): Kamil Wielecki Coping with Uncertainty - Petty Traders in Post-Soviet Russia (Hardcover, New edition)
Kamil Wielecki
R1,158 Discovery Miles 11 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Petty trade helped vast numbers of people to survive the crisis faced by post-Soviet Russia. The book analyses how this survival technique was carried out in practice. On the basis of his fieldwork research, the author shows how people coped with rapid social change and places their activities within a context of government policies, migration flows and entrepreneurial strategies. "This is an original work based on extensive fieldwork research. Wielecki skillfully intertwined "ethnographic meat" with "the bones of theory", which has resulted in a "flesh-and-blood" anthropology." Michal Buchowski "This is an immensely insightful exploration of petty trade in post-Soviet Russia. The author laces his genuine ethnographic work in a coherent account of the concepts of uncertainty, embeddedness, and informal economy." Violetta Zentai

Introduction to Many-Facet Rasch Measurement - Analyzing and Evaluating Rater-Mediated Assessments. 2nd Revised and Updated... Introduction to Many-Facet Rasch Measurement - Analyzing and Evaluating Rater-Mediated Assessments. 2nd Revised and Updated Edition (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
Thomas Eckes
R1,432 Discovery Miles 14 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the early days of performance assessment, human ratings have been subject to various forms of error and bias. Expert raters often come up with different ratings for the very same performance and it seems that assessment outcomes largely depend upon which raters happen to assign the rating. This book provides an introduction to many-facet Rasch measurement (MFRM), a psychometric approach that establishes a coherent framework for drawing reliable, valid, and fair inferences from rater-mediated assessments, thus answering the problem of fallible human ratings. Revised and updated throughout, the Second Edition includes a stronger focus on the Facets computer program, emphasizing the pivotal role that MFRM plays for validating the interpretations and uses of assessment outcomes.

Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future (Hardcover): FG Conrad Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future (Hardcover)

R3,554 Discovery Miles 35 540 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Praise forEnvisioning the Survey Interview of the Future

"This book is an excellent introduction to some brave new technologies . . . and their possible impacts on the way surveys might be conducted. Anyone interested in the future of survey methodology should read this book."

Norman M. Bradburn, PhD, National Opinion Research Center, University of Chicago

"Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future gathers some of the brightest minds in alternative methods of gathering self-report data, with an eye toward the future self-report sample survey. Conrad and Schober, by assembling a group of talented survey researchers and creative inventors of new software-based tools to gather information from human subjects, have created a volume of importance to all interested in imagining future ways of interviewing."

Robert M. Groves, PhD, Survey Research Center, University of Michigan

This collaboration provides extensive insight into the impact of communication technology on survey research

As previously unimaginable communication technologies rapidly become commonplace, survey researchers are presented with both opportunities and obstacles when collecting and interpreting data based on human response. Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future explores the increasing influence of emerging technologies on the data collection process and, in particular, self-report data collection in interviews, providing the key principles for using these new modes of communication.

With contributions written by leading researchers in the fields of survey methodology and communication technology, this compilation integrates the use of modern technological developments with establishedsocial science theory. The book familiarizes readers with these new modes of communication by discussing the challenges to accuracy, legitimacy, and confidentiality that researchers must anticipate while collecting data, and it also provides tools for adopting new technologies in order to obtain high-quality results with minimal error or bias.

Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future addresses questions that researchers in survey methodology and communication technology must consider, such as:

How and when should new communication technology be adopted in the interview process?

What are the principles that extend beyond particular technologies?

Why do respondents answer questions from a computer differently than questions from a human interviewer?

How can systems adapt to respondents' thinking and feeling?

What new ethical concerns about privacy and confidentiality are raised from using new communication technologies?

With its multidisciplinary approach, extensive discussion of existing and future technologies, and practical guidelines for adopting new technology, Envisioning the Survey Interview of the Future is an essential resource for survey methodologists, questionnaire designers, and communication technologists in any field that conducts survey research. It also serves as an excellent supplement for courses in research methods at the upper-undergraduate or graduate level.

Nonlinear Valuation and Non-Gaussian Risks in Finance (Hardcover, New Ed): Dilip B. Madan, Wim Schoutens Nonlinear Valuation and Non-Gaussian Risks in Finance (Hardcover, New Ed)
Dilip B. Madan, Wim Schoutens
R2,862 R2,470 Discovery Miles 24 700 Save R392 (14%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

What happens to risk as the economic horizon goes to zero and risk is seen as an exposure to a change in state that may occur instantaneously at any time? All activities that have been undertaken statically at a fixed finite horizon can now be reconsidered dynamically at a zero time horizon, with arrival rates at the core of the modeling. This book, aimed at practitioners and researchers in financial risk, delivers the theoretical framework and various applications of the newly established dynamic conic finance theory. The result is a nonlinear non-Gaussian valuation framework for risk management in finance. Risk-free assets disappear and low risk portfolios must pay for their risk reduction with negative expected returns. Hedges may be constructed to enhance value by exploiting risk interactions. Dynamic trading mechanisms are synthesized by machine learning algorithms. Optimal exposures are designed for option positioning simultaneously across all strikes and maturities.

Bayesian Data Analysis for the Behavioral and Neural Sciences - Non-Calculus Fundamentals (Hardcover): Todd E. Hudson Bayesian Data Analysis for the Behavioral and Neural Sciences - Non-Calculus Fundamentals (Hardcover)
Todd E. Hudson
R2,925 R2,533 Discovery Miles 25 330 Save R392 (13%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This textbook bypasses the need for advanced mathematics by providing in-text computer code, allowing students to explore Bayesian data analysis without the calculus background normally considered a prerequisite for this material. Now, students can use the best methods without needing advanced mathematical techniques. This approach goes beyond "frequentist" concepts of p-values and null hypothesis testing, using the full power of modern probability theory to solve real-world problems. The book offers a fully self-contained course, which demonstrates analysis techniques throughout with worked examples crafted specifically for students in the behavioral and neural sciences. The book presents two general algorithms that help students solve the measurement and model selection (also called "hypothesis testing") problems most frequently encountered in real-world applications.

Standardization and Tacit Knowledge - Interaction and Practice in the Survey Interview (Hardcover): D.W. Maynard Standardization and Tacit Knowledge - Interaction and Practice in the Survey Interview (Hardcover)
D.W. Maynard
R4,667 Discovery Miles 46 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An interdisciplinary look at interaction in the standardized survey interview

This volume presents a theoretical and empirical inquiry into the interaction between interviewers and respondents in standardized research interviews. The editors include a range of articles that showcase the perspectives of conversation analysts, ethnomethodologists, and survey methodologists, to gain a more complete picture of interaction in the standardized survey interview than was previously available.

This book is the first to focus solely on the interactional substrate or conversational architecture of interviewing. It offers a range of insights into standardized interviewing as interaction and forms a bridge between survey methodology and the study of interaction and tacit practices. The articles are arranged into four subject groups: theoretical orientations, survey recruitment, interaction during the substantive interview, and interaction and survey data quality. Articles include:

  • Interactions in telephone surveys
  • Recruitment of respondents
  • Respondent laughter
  • Interaction coding
  • Impact of technology on interaction
  • Occasions for interviewer intervention

Standardization and Tacit Knowledge serves as a one-of-a-kind reference for survey methodologists, linguists, and researchers and also as a postgraduate coursebook in survey interviewing.

High-Dimensional Probability - An Introduction with Applications in Data Science (Hardcover): Roman Vershynin High-Dimensional Probability - An Introduction with Applications in Data Science (Hardcover)
Roman Vershynin
R1,971 Discovery Miles 19 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

High-dimensional probability offers insight into the behavior of random vectors, random matrices, random subspaces, and objects used to quantify uncertainty in high dimensions. Drawing on ideas from probability, analysis, and geometry, it lends itself to applications in mathematics, statistics, theoretical computer science, signal processing, optimization, and more. It is the first to integrate theory, key tools, and modern applications of high-dimensional probability. Concentration inequalities form the core, and it covers both classical results such as Hoeffding's and Chernoff's inequalities and modern developments such as the matrix Bernstein's inequality. It then introduces the powerful methods based on stochastic processes, including such tools as Slepian's, Sudakov's, and Dudley's inequalities, as well as generic chaining and bounds based on VC dimension. A broad range of illustrations is embedded throughout, including classical and modern results for covariance estimation, clustering, networks, semidefinite programming, coding, dimension reduction, matrix completion, machine learning, compressed sensing, and sparse regression.

Minority Shareholder Monitoring and German Corporate Governance - Empirical Evidence and Value Effects (Hardcover, New... Minority Shareholder Monitoring and German Corporate Governance - Empirical Evidence and Value Effects (Hardcover, New edition)
Christian Thamm
R856 Discovery Miles 8 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book comprises three studies on minority shareholder monitoring in Germany. Mandatory disclosure requirements have increased transparency. An analysis of the information that is publicly available is presented, regardless of the size of the target corporation. The second essay in the form of an event study pays special attention to the German supervisory board and its appointment for a fixed term. Capital markets perceive an activist effort as being more credible under certain circumstances. The study as a whole is empirical evidence for increased minority shareholder activity in Germany. The evidence presented supports the strong shareholder rights perspective. It conflicts with the weak shareholder rights view brought forward in the international literature.

Interviewers' Deviations in Surveys - Impact, Reasons, Detection and Prevention (Hardcover, New edition): Peter Winker,... Interviewers' Deviations in Surveys - Impact, Reasons, Detection and Prevention (Hardcover, New edition)
Peter Winker, Natalja Menold, Rolf Porst
R1,527 Discovery Miles 15 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Survey data are used in many disciplines including Social Sciences, Economics and Psychology. Interviewers' behaviour might affect the quality of such data. This book presents the results of new research on interviewers' motivation and behaviour. A substantial number of contributions address deviant behaviour, methods for assessing the impact of such behaviour on data quality and tools for detecting faked interviews. Further chapters discuss methods for preventing undesirable interviewer effects. Apart from specific methodological contributions, the chapters of the book also provide a unique collection of examples of deviant behaviour and its detection - a topic not overly present in literature despite its substantial prevalence in survey field work. The volume includes 13 peer reviewed papers presented at an international workshop in Rauischholzhausen in October 2011.

Russia's Comparative Advantages in Foreign Trade - Forecasting Potential Dynamics and Identifying Stimulation Measures... Russia's Comparative Advantages in Foreign Trade - Forecasting Potential Dynamics and Identifying Stimulation Measures (Hardcover, New edition)
Ivan Savin
R962 Discovery Miles 9 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Identifying factors which stimulate regional growth and international competitiveness and using them for forecasting are the aims of this book. Departing from the theory of comparative advantages and their impact, the author demonstrates that such an approach has to be based on a sound theoretical foundation and on appropriate, advanced econometric methods. He proposes the use of heuristic optimization techniques, Monte Carlo simulation experiments and Lasso-type estimators to avoid bias or misleading findings, which might be the result of applying standard regression methods when key assumptions are not satisfied. In addition, the author demonstrates how some heuristic optimization-based methods can be used to obtain forecasts of industrial production in Russia and Germany founded on past observations and some leading indicators.

Financial Return Risk and the Effect on Shareholder Wealth - How M&A Announcements and Banking Crisis Events Affect Stock Mean... Financial Return Risk and the Effect on Shareholder Wealth - How M&A Announcements and Banking Crisis Events Affect Stock Mean Returns and Stock Return Risk- A Compendium of Five Empirical Studies across Selective Industries (Hardcover, New edition)
Malte Raudszus
R1,452 Discovery Miles 14 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This dissertation comprises five studies analyzing daily stock returns of listed firms. Studies one and two shed light on corporate diversification through M&A and how related risk dynamics affect shareholder wealth. Carrying over the risk analysis methodology 'GARCH' to external events in studies three and four, the author individually scrutinizes the adverse implications of bank failures and bailouts in the 2007-2009 financial crisis. Finding opposing return shocks, he identifies the limits of the 'symmetric' GARCH. As observed of the behavior of stock return data, volatility reacts asymmetrically to positive and negative return shocks. The advanced EGARCH incorporates this so called 'leverage effect'. Applying the EGARCH in his final study, the author can simultaneously scrutinize the adverse bank events with an appropriate econometric foundation.

Human error is implicated in nearly all aviation accidents, yet most investigation and prevention programs are not designed around any theoretical framework of human error. Appropriate for all levels of expertise, the book provides the knowledge and tools required to conduct a human error analysis of accidents, regardless of operational setting (i.e. military, commercial, or general aviation). The book contains a complete description of the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS), which incorporates James Reason's model of latent and active failures as a foundation. Widely disseminated among military and civilian organizations, HFACS encompasses all aspects of human error, including the conditions of operators and elements of supervisory and organizational failure. It attracts a very broad readership. Specifically, the book serves as the main textbook for a course in aviation accident investigation taught by one of the authors at the University of Illinois. This book will also be used in courses designed for military safety officers and flight surgeons in the U.S. Navy, Army and the Canadian Defense Force, who currently utilize the HFACS system during aviation accident investigations. Additionally, the book has been incorporated into the popular workshop on accident analysis and prevention provided by the authors at several professional conferences world-wide. The book is also targeted for students attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University which has satellite campuses throughout the world and offers a course in human factors accident investigation for many of its majors. In addition, the book will be incorporated into courses offered by Transportation Safety International and the Southern California Safety Institute. Finally, this book serves as an excellent reference guide for many safety professionals and investigators already in the field.
