Formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a natural process during oxidative metabolism. ROS play an important role not only in pathological processes of human organism as usually presented but less attention is paid to their proper important role in cell signalling, biosynthesis or non-specific anti-infectious defence. Overproduction of ROS during numerous pathological situations in presence of insufficient antioxidant protection leads to substantial oxidative changes of lipids, proteins, sugars, and also DNA. Protection against ROS is assured by different extracellular or intracellular antioxidant mechanisms as studied during last decades. Antioxidant enzymes rectifying the oxidative damage are studied with regard to their different activities and usefulness in body protection. Their genetic polymorphisms are certainly involved in different response to oxidative stress. Special attention should be devoted to the topic of oxidative nuclear and mitochondrial DNA damage and its restoring via DNA repair process, especially base excision repair (BER). A large scale of antioxidant enzymes is involved in correction of DNA oxidative damage. Natural trend of worsened DNA repair is usually associated with aging. Other pathologies related with deficient DNA repair are susceptibility to carcinogenesis (lack of apoptosis control) or degenerative diseases. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus (DM -- oxidative stress of mainly metabolic origin) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD -- oxidative stress of mainly inflammatory origin). In spite of confirmed OS in DM or IBD, the substantial information about the intensity of DNA repair and its possible relationship to the disease course and development of chronic complications is missing. The author pilot studies completed both in adult and paediatric patients with DM or IBD confirmed an increased oxidative stress as well as oxidative DNA damage examined with comet assay. The surprising findings were ascertained in intensity of DNA repair (analysed with modified comet assay).
Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem for the developed and developing countries and it is a burden on healthcare systems as well as individuals. Nutraceuticals, Glycemic Health and Type 2 Diabetes primarily focuses on the nutraceuticals that assist in preventing and managing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. The book gives an overview of glycemic health and highlights the use of novel and upcoming nutraceutical ingredients such as bioactive peptides, traditional herbs from India and Mexico, resistant starches, cinnamon, chromium III and others. After the successful commercial application of bioactive peptides as nutraceutical ingredients in the management of blood pressure, companies are now focusing on peptides for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes. Resistant starches in the clinical studies have demonstrated to reduce the glycemic and insulin response and increasing insulin sensitivity. These and other nutraceuticals that are supported by scientific and clinical studies are highlighted. The editors and contributors are experts in their respective fields and are largely from the university, industry and government. Nutraceuticals, Glycemic Health and Type 2 Diabetes will be useful as a standard reference book for all those concerned with the role of nutraceuticals and glycemia in the prevention and control of type 2 diabetes.

Eric was 150 pounds overweight, depressed, and sick. After a lifetime of failed diet attempts, and the onset of type 2 diabetes due to his weight, Eric went to a new doctor, who surprisingly prescribed a shelter dog. And that's when Eric met Peety: an overweight, middle-aged, and forgotten dog who, like Eric, had seen better days. The two adopted each other and began an incredible journey together, forming a bond of unconditional love that forever changed their lives. Over the next year, just by going on walks, playing together, and eating plant-based foods, Eric lost 150 pounds, and Peety lost 25. As a result, Eric reversed his diabetes, got off all medication, and became happy and healthy for the first time in his life-eventually reconnecting with and marrying his high school sweetheart. WALKING WITH PEETY is for anyone who is ready to make a change in his or her life, and for everyone who knows the joy, love, and hope that dogs can bring. This is more than a tale of mutual rescue. This is an epic story of friendship and strength.

As the number of patients with diabetes increases annually, it is not surprising that the number of patients with diabetes who are admitted to the hospital also increases. Once in the hospital, patients with diabetes or hyperglycemia may be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, require urgent or elective surgery, enteral or parenteral nutrition, intravenous insulin infusion, or therapies that significantly impact glycemic control (e.g., steroids). Because many clinical outcomes are influenced by the degree of glycemic control, knowledge of the best practices in inpatient diabetes management is extremely important. The field of inpatient management of diabetes and hyperglycemia has grown substantially in the last several years. This body of knowledge is summarized in this book, so it can reach the audience of hospitalists, endocrinologists, nurses and other team members who take care of hospitalized patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia.

"Approaches to Behavior" provides information and simple tools that
healthcare professionals can use to help patients move beyond
feelings that prevent them from benefiting fully from any learning
opportunity. Each chapter opens with an introduction to experts'
newest psychological understanding about a common emotion. This is
followed by a list of easy techniques healthcare professionals can
employ with their patients. Each technique was contributed by
experienced mental health experts who counsel people with diabetes.
None of these techniques can take the place of the in-depth
guidance mental healthcare professionals provide. Instead, this
book is a first aid kit that experts can use to help patients start
to move past strong emotions and become more receptive to vital
information that will improve their lives and help them take
control of their diabetes.

Physical movement has a positive effect on physical fitness, morbidity, and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Although exercise has long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes management, many health care providers fail to prescribe it. In addition, many fitness professionals may be unaware of the complexities of including physical activity in the management of diabetes. Giving patients or clients a full exercise prescription that take other chronic conditions commonly accompanying diabetes into account may be too time-consuming for or beyond the expertise of many health care and fitness professionals. The purpose of this book is to cover the recommended types and quantities of physical activities that can and should be undertaken by all individuals with any type of diabetes, along with precautions related to medication use and diabetes-related health complications. Medications used to control diabetes should augment lifestyle improvements like increased daily physical activity rather than replace them. Up until now, professional books with exercise information and prescriptions were not timely or interactive enough to easily provide busy professionals with access to the latest recommendations for each unique patient. However, simply instructing patients to "exercise more" is frequently not motivating or informative enough to get them regularly or safely active. This book is changing all that with its up-to-date and easy-to-prescribe exercise and physical activity recommendations and relevant case studies. Read and learn to quickly prescribe effective and appropriate exercise to everyone.
The breakthrough 3-step program to conquer type 2 diabetes with little to no medication. If you've been diagnosed with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, it's easy to think,"How did this happen? I watched what I ate. If only I had tried harder, eaten fewer calories and burned more." But you're not alone, and it's not your fault. Many traditional diets can actually promoteinsulin resistance over time because they don't take into account your different metabolism. You may be one of the millions who have Metabolism B (metabolic syndrome), an inherited condition that can cause your body to overreact to carbohydrate foods, release excess insulin, and gain body fat- and eventually develop type 2 diabetes. The good news is that you can take control of your diabetes, starting today. When registered dietician Diane Kress herself developed this condition over a decade ago- despite following the ADA-recommended dietary guidelines- she realized that the"status quo" nutrition plans just don't work for everyone. In The Diabetes Miracle , she identifies the reason why. Now, she shares the ground-breaking 3-step program that she has created for the prevention and management of this progressive, potentially fatal condition. It's the miracle diet and lifestyle plan that thousands of her patients have been successful with- and that Kress personally adheres to today, controlling her diabetes without medication. Now you can get the facts and eat to treat the root cause of type 2 diabetes. With The Diabetes Miracle , you can expect to: type="disc" Correct your body's insulin imbalance naturally and stop the progression from Metabolism B to prediabetes to diabetes &ldquoRest, reset, and retrain" your pancreas to process carbs and react more normally to blood glucose changes Lose weight and keep it off- especially the love handles and excess back fat Get the best blood sugar readings you have experienced since your diagnosis on the least amount of medication Have more energy, sleep great, look younger, and feel healthier Gain control of type 2 diabetes on an easy, livable programThis diabetes bible provides clear details about the disease itself, the newest parameters for diagnosis, and preventing complications. Most doctors consider diabetes a one-way street - once you have it, your only option is to manage the symptoms with a restricted diet, close monitoring of blood sugar, and medications. Pharmacist, Suzy Cohen, shows that diabetes can be treated instead through safe, natural means, like food and vitamins, rather than strictly relying on prescription drugs. She shifts the focus away from glucose management to a whole body approach, using supplements, minerals, and dietary changes to lose weight, repair cell damage, improve insulin function, and reduce the side effects from prescription drugs, many of which rob nutrients from the body and cause additional symptoms. This 5-step program uses natural alternatives, such as drinking nutrition-packed green drinks, adding vitamin D and anti-inflammatory supplements, increasing fibre intake, and including minerals in the diet to help restore the body's own supply of insulin. "Diabetes Without Drugs" explains how patients can protect their heart, kidneys, eyesight, and limbs from the damage often caused by diabetes and shows the impact that the right foods and the right supplements can make in reducing blood sugar levels, aiding weight loss, and restoring vibrant health to everyone with diabetes.
People with diabetes are 1.6 times more likely than people without diabetes to use a complementary or alternative medicine supplement. This clinician's guide will give you facts and tips to help your patients successfully consider using a CAM supplement. This book deals with all the aspects of diabetes in clinical practice, presented in the form of questions concerning diabetes diagnosis, management and therapy based on real-life case studies. Each question is answered in a clear, easy to follow style. The authors begin with general questions regarding diabetes, its pathophysiology and diagnostic tests. They then cover all the major complications that can arise in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes. The authors also discuss special groups, such as adolescents and the elderly. The book features useful information for patients and their healthcare professionals on daily activities such as exercise, nutrition, driving, travelling and sick day rules. New innovations in both diagnostic and therapeutic approaches continue to be developed, posing a constant challenge to healthcare professionals to stay abreast of new advances and in particular to know how to apply this knowledge in their every-day practice. This book offers a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide to help healthcare professionals achieve their target of optimal management and treatment of their patients. It will be relevant to all members of the diabetes team, in primary and secondary care: physicians, diabetes specialist nurses, diabetes educators, dieticians, podiatrists; endocrinologists and postgraduate medical students. |
