"Growing numbers of people are fascinated by the dream world. From
psychological scholars and analysts to spontaneous groups and
cults, the dream has a compelling voice. I make the point in this
book that our dreams are our most creative inner source of wisdom
and hope. The criterion for selection is simply that each one
illustrates a common human life experience that all readers have
had or are likely to have." -- From the Introduction by the Author
Dream interpretation was a prominent feature of the intellectual
and imaginative world of late antiquity, for martyrs and magicians,
philosophers and theologians, polytheists and monotheists alike.
Finding it difficult to account for the prevalence of
dream-divination, modern scholarship has often condemned it as a
cultural weakness, a mass lapse into mere superstition. In this
book, Patricia Cox Miller draws on pagan, Jewish, and Christian
sources and modern semiotic theory to demonstrate the integral
importance of dreams in late-antique thought and life. She argues
that Graeco-Roman dream literature functioned as a language of
signs that formed a personal and cultural pattern of imagination
and gave tangible substance to ideas such as time, cosmic history,
and the self.
Miller first discusses late-antique theories of dreaming, with
emphasis on theological, philosophical, and hermeneutical methods
of deciphering dreams as well as the practical uses of dreams,
especially in magic and the cult of Asclepius. She then considers
the cases of six Graeco-Roman dreamers: Hermas, Perpetua, Aelius
Aristides, Jerome, Gregory of Nyssa, and Gregory of Nazianus. Her
detailed readings illuminate the ways in which dreams provided
solutions to ethical and religious problems, allowed for the
reconfiguration of gender and identity, provided occasions for the
articulation of ethical ideas, and altogether served as a means of
making sense and order of the world.
Ever wish you had a magic wand to wave when a creative project was
not going the way you wanted it to? Enchanting Creativity is a book
to help the artist find their happily-ever-after by using a unique
blend of fairy tales, dreams, rituals, and journaling, along with
practical applications. Within the metaphoric structure of the
Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, the book provides readers with
techniques to remember, record, and work with waking and sleeping
dreams; methods to expand the dream experience or as an alternative
to dreaming; and tips to develop and use rituals to honour dreams
and creative work. A fairy tale weaves its way through the
chapters, providing an exploration of the creative process, while
the author's personal creative experiences and those of her clients
offer examples of dream and/or oracle work, journaling questions,
and simple rituals. Create a bridge between the practical and the
imaginal worlds and watch the power of your creative magic express
itself.

The Interpretation of Dreams is a seminal work of psychological and
cultural heritage and probably the most important of Freud's
impressive output. Published in 1899 but revised by Freud himself
many times, it outlines his theories on the unconscious and dream
symbolism. Though largely discredited and superseded by subsequent
developments and research, it retains its place as a hugely
influential and significant opus. This new deluxe edition uses A.A.
Brill's 1913 translation of the third edition, with a new
introduction by expert Dr Richard Stevens, who discusses the
context, reception, influence, importance and merits or otherwise
of Freud's text and Brill's translation - truly one of the most
influential, if controversial, Great Works that Shape Our World.
FLAME TREE's Great Works That Shape Our World is a new series of
definitive books drawing on ancient, medieval and modern writing.
Offering a fund of essential knowledge, and spell-binding stories
it satisfies every facet of human interest: scientific,
philosophical, sociological, romantic, dramatic and mysterious.
