Employment law is a rapidly expanding and increasingly important
aspect of Irish legal practice. Significantly influenced and
informed by developments at European Union level and by various
Constitutional imperatives, it is composed not only of a complex
body of legislation and case law, but also of determinations from
specialist tribunals such as the Workplace Relations Commission and
the Labour Court. This edition is fully updated with recent
developments in case law and statutory developments including the
Workplace Relations Act 2015, the Protection of Employees
(Temporary Agency Work) Act 2012, the Protected Disclosures Act
2014, the Paternity Leave & Benefit Act 2016, the Equality Act
(Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015, for example. This updated
edition also includes a new chapter on protected disclosures i.e.
whistle-blower protection and a new chapter on practice and
procedure. In this book the authors draw together the various
strands and sources of employment law as it applies in Ireland into
a coherent framework. All aspects of employment law are considered,
ranging from the legal concerns that apply before an employment
contract is signed, to the various entitlements and obligations of
employer and employee while the contract is ongoing, to the
relevant legal framework governing the circumstances in which an
employment relationship is terminated.
In Dying to Work, Jonathan Karmel raises our awareness of unsafe
working conditions with accounts of workers who were needlessly
injured or killed on the job. Based on heart-wrenching interviews
Karmel conducted with injured workers and surviving family members
across the country, the stories in this book are introduced in a
way that helps place them in a historical and political context and
represent a wide survey of the American workplace, including, among
others, warehouse workers, grocery store clerks, hotel
housekeepers, and river dredgers. Karmel's examples are portraits
of the lives and dreams cut short and reports of the workplace
incidents that tragically changed the lives of everyone around
them. Dying to Work includes incidents from industries and jobs
that we do not commonly associate with injuries and fatalities and
highlights the risks faced by workers who are hidden in plain view
all around us. While exposing the failure of safety laws that leave
millions of workers without compensation and employers without any
meaningful incentive to protect their workers, Karmel offers the
reader some hope in the form of policy suggestions that may make
American workers safer and employers more accountable. This is a
book for anyone interested in issues of worker health and safety,
and it will also serve as the cornerstone for courses in public
policy, community health, labor studies, business ethics,
regulation and safety, and occupational and environmental health
policy.
Employment Law in Context provides students with a complete guide
to employment law. David Cabrelli combines extracts from leading
cases and articles with insightful and sophisticated author
commentary to provide the reader with a full, critical
understanding of employment law. As well as providing a thorough
grounding in individual labour law, and drawing attention to key
and current areas of debate, this title offers the reader detailed
analysis of the social, economic, political, and historical context
in which employment law operates. An innovative running case study
contextualizes employment law and demonstrates its practical
applications by following the life-cycle of a company from
incorporation, through expansion, to liquidation. Reflection points
and examples encourage the development of critical thinking skills
and students' ability to view the issues practically. Digital

Weekly's Five Best Religion Titles of 2017 Is privilege real or
imagined? It's clear that issues of race and equality have come to
the forefront in our nation's consciousness. Every week yet another
incident involving racial tension splashes across headlines and
dominates our news feeds. But it's not easy to unpack the origins
of these tensions, and perhaps we wonder whether any of these
issues really has anything to do with us. Ken Wytsma, founder of
the Justice Conference, understands these questions. He has gone
through his own journey of understanding the underpinnings of
inequality and privilege. In this timely, insightful book Wytsma
unpacks what we need to know to be grounded in conversations about
today's race-related issues. And he helps us come to a deeper
understanding of both the origins of these issues and the
reconciling role we are called to play as witnesses of the gospel.
This expanded edition includes a new afterword with further
reflections on race and privilege in today's cultural context
This publication provides country examples and best practices on
measuring international labour mobility. It was prepared by a task
force composed of experts from national statistical offices, and
coordinated by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
The aim is to provide guidance and structure to the production of
statistics on stocks and flows of international migrant workers and
non-resident foreign workers within a country. Such statistics cut
across economic, social and demographic domains and rely on a
variety of data sources. The publication a) outlines the context
and core concepts; b) provides an overview of data availability; c)
contains examples from four country case studies; d) provides
recommendations for producers of statistics; and e) identifies
areas for further development. The publication is primarily
designed for use by national statistical offices in producing
international labour mobility statistics, as well as users of
statistics in these and related fields.
