This book will examine these challenges and provide tools and methods to overcome them. Exploring such industries as automotive, healthcare, business intelligence, energy and home appliances, this book is a valuable resource for academics, scholars, professionals and leaders in innovation, R&D, technology, and engineering management.

Crossing Boundaries, Building Bridges (Hardcover): Annie Canel, Ruth Oldenziel Crossing Boundaries, Building Bridges (Hardcover)
Annie Canel, Ruth Oldenziel; Edited by Karin Zachmann
R4,367 Discovery Miles 43 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Women engineers have been in the public limelight for decades, yet we have surprisingly little historically grounded understanding of the patterns of employment and education of women in this field. Most studies are either policy papers or limited to statistical analyses. Moreover, the scant historical research so far available emphasizes the individual, single and unique character of those women working in engineering, often using anecdotal evidence but ignoring larger issues like the patterns of the labour market and educational institutions.
Crossing Boundaries, Building Bridges offers answers to the question why women engineers have required special permits to pass through the male guarded gates of engineering and examines how they have managed this. It explores the differences and similarities between women engineers in nine countries from a gender point of view. Through case studies the book considers the mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion of women engineers.

ISE Engineering Design (Paperback, 6th edition): George Dieter, Linda Schmidt ISE Engineering Design (Paperback, 6th edition)
George Dieter, Linda Schmidt
R1,689 Discovery Miles 16 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The sixth edition of Engineering Design continues its tradition of being more oriented to material selection, design for manufacturing, and design for quality than other broad-based design texts. The text is intended to be used in either a junior or senior engineering design course with an integrated, hands-on design project. At the University of Maryland, we (the authors) present the design process material, Chapters 1 through 9, to junior students in a course introducing the design process. The whole text is used in the senior capstone design course that includes a complete design project, starting from selecting a market to creating a working prototype. Our intention is that students will consider this book to be a valuable part of their professional library. Toward this end we have continued and expanded the practice of giving key literature references and referrals to useful websites.

The Inventor of Stereo - The life and works of Alan Dower Blumlein (Paperback, New edition): Robert Alexander The Inventor of Stereo - The life and works of Alan Dower Blumlein (Paperback, New edition)
Robert Alexander
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the definitive study of the life and works of one of Britain's most important inventors who, due to a cruel set of circumstances, has all but been overlooked by history. Alan Dower Blumlein led an extraordinary life in which his inventive output rate easily surpassed that of Edison, but whose early death during the darkest days of World War Two led to a shroud of secrecy which has covered his life and achievements ever since. His 1931 Patent for a Binaural Recording system was so revolutionary that most of his contemporaries regarded it at as more than 20 years ahead of its time. Even years after his death, the full magnitude of its detail had not been fully utilized. Among his 128 Patents are the principle electronic circuits critical to the development of the world's first electronic television system. During his short working life, Blumlein produced patent after patent breaking entirely new ground in electronic and audio engineering. During the Second World War, Alan Blumlein was deeply engaged in the very secret work of radar development and contributed enormously to the system eventually to become 'H2S'- blind bombing radar. Tragically, during an experimental H2S flight in June 1942, the Halifax bomber in which Blumlein and several colleagues were flying, crashed and all aboard were killed. He was just days short of his 39th birthday. For many years there have been rumours about a biography of Alan Blumlein, yet none has been forthcoming. This is the world's first study of a man whose achievements should rank among those of the greatest Britain has produced. This book provides detailed knowledge of every one of his patents and the process behind them, while giving an in depth study of the life and times of this quite extraordinary man.

Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Engineering Models (Mixed media product, 2009 ed.): John R. Hauser Numerical Methods for Nonlinear Engineering Models (Mixed media product, 2009 ed.)
John R. Hauser
R6,724 Discovery Miles 67 240 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

There are many books on the use of numerical methods for solving engineering problems and for modeling of engineering artifacts. In addition there are many styles of such presentations ranging from books with a major emphasis on theory to books with an emphasis on applications. The purpose of this book is hopefully to present a somewhat different approach to the use of numerical methods for - gineering applications. Engineering models are in general nonlinear models where the response of some appropriate engineering variable depends in a nonlinear manner on the - plication of some independent parameter. It is certainly true that for many types of engineering models it is sufficient to approximate the real physical world by some linear model. However, when engineering environments are pushed to - treme conditions, nonlinear effects are always encountered. It is also such - treme conditions that are of major importance in determining the reliability or failure limits of engineering systems. Hence it is essential than engineers have a toolbox of modeling techniques that can be used to model nonlinear engineering systems. Such a set of basic numerical methods is the topic of this book. For each subject area treated, nonlinear models are incorporated into the discussion from the very beginning and linear models are simply treated as special cases of more general nonlinear models. This is a basic and fundamental difference in this book from most books on numerical methods.
