Engineering Risk and Finance (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Charles S. Tapiero Engineering Risk and Finance (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Charles S. Tapiero
R4,937 Discovery Miles 49 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Risk models are models of uncertainty, engineered for some purposes. They are "educated guesses and hypotheses" assessed and valued in terms of well-defined future states and their consequences. They are engineered to predict, to manage countable and accountable futures and to provide a frame of reference within which we may believe that "uncertainty is tamed". Quantitative-statistical tools are used to reconcile our information, experience and other knowledge with hypotheses that both serve as the foundation of risk models and also value and price risk. Risk models are therefore common to most professions, each with its own methods and techniques based on their needs, experience and a wisdom accrued over long periods of time. This book provides a broad and interdisciplinary foundation to engineering risks and to their financial valuation and pricing. Risk models applied in industry and business, heath care, safety, the environment and regulation are used to highlight their variety while financial valuation techniques are used to assess their financial consequences. This book is technically accessible to all readers and students with a basic background in probability and statistics (with 3 chapters devoted to introduce their elements). Principles of risk measurement, valuation and financial pricing as well as the economics of uncertainty are outlined in 5 chapters with numerous examples and applications. New results, extending classical models such as the CCAPM are presented providing insights to assess the risks and their price in an interconnected, dependent and strategic economic environment. In an environment departing from the fundamental assumptions we make regarding financial markets, the book provides a strategic/game-like approach to assess the risk and the opportunities that such an environment implies. To control these risks, a strategic-control approach is developed that recognizes that many risks resulting by "what we do" as well as "what others do". In particular we address the strategic and statistical control of compliance in large financial institutions confronted increasingly with a complex and far more extensive regulation.

Human Error, Safety and Systems Development - IFIP 18th World Computer Congress TC13 / WG13.5 7th Working Conference on Human Error, Safety and Systems Development 22-27 August 2004 Toulouse, France (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Philippe Palanque, Chris Johnson
R4,192 Discovery Miles 41 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Recent accidents in a range of industries have increased concern over the design, development, management and control of safety-critical systems. Attention has now focused upon the role of human error both in the development and in the operation of complex processes.
Human Error, Safety and Systems Development gathers contributions from practitioners and researchers presenting and discussing leading edge techniques that can be used to mitigate the impact of error (both system and human) on safety-critical systems. Some of these contributions can be easily integrated into existing systems engineering practices while others provide a more theoretical and fundamental perspective on the issues raised by these kinds of interactive systems. More precisely the contributions cover the following themes:
-Techniques for incident and accident analysis;
-Empirical studies of operator behaviour in safety-critical systems;
-Observational studies of safety-critical systems;
-Risk assessment techniques for interactive systems;
-Safety-related interface design, development and testing;
-Formal description techniques for the design and development of safety-critical interactive systems.
Many diverse sectors are covered, including but not limited to aviation, maritime and the other transportation industries, the healthcare industry, process and power generation and military applications.

This volume contains 20 original and significant contributions addressing these critical questions. The papers were presented at the 7th IFIP Working Group 13.5 Working Conference on Human Error, Safety and Systems Development, which was held in August 2004 in conjunction with the 18th IFIP World Computer Congress in Toulouse, France, and sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

Energy Dissipation in Molecular Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Andre Tramer, Christian Jungen, Francoise Lahmani Energy Dissipation in Molecular Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Andre Tramer, Christian Jungen, Francoise Lahmani
R2,808 Discovery Miles 28 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Energy Dissipation in Molecular Systems analyzes experimental data on the redistribution and dissipation of energy injected into molecular systems by radiation or charged particles. These processes, competing with such practically important relaxation channels as chemical reaction or stimulated emission (laser action), are the primary focus in this monograph. Among other topics, the book treats vibrational redistribution and electronic relaxation in isolated molecules and the effects of inter-molecular interactions (collisions, complex formation, solvent effects) on the relaxation paths. Primary photo-chemical processes (such as isomerization, proton or hydrogen-atom transfer, electron transfer and ionization) are also treated as particular cases of vibrational or electronic relaxation. Only a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and spectroscopy is assumed and calculations are kept to a strict minimum, making the book more accessible to students.

Information theory is an exceptional field in many ways. Technically, it is one of the rare fields in which mathematical results and insights have led directly to significant engineering payoffs. Professionally, it is a field that has sustained a remarkable degree of community, collegiality and high standards. James L. Massey, whose work in the field is honored here, embodies the highest standards of the profession in his own career. The book covers the latest work on: block coding, convolutional coding, cryptography, and information theory. The 44 contributions represent a cross-section of the world's leading scholars, scientists and researchers in information theory and communication. The book is rounded off with an index and a bibliography of publications by James Massey.

Concrete-Block Manufacture - Processes And Machines (Hardcover): H. H. Rice Concrete-Block Manufacture - Processes And Machines (Hardcover)
H. H. Rice
R927 Discovery Miles 9 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

PREFACE. THE object of this book is to present in a simple manner those well-established principles of concreting which practice has shown applicable to the manufacture of concrete blocks for building hollow walls. The theoretical and technical questions which arise in connec- tion with the industry are only considered in so far as benefit may result to the operator in the actual manufacture of blocks and their use in construction. The conclusions which have been reached are the result not only of the authors experience in actual work, but of a careful consideration of the successes and failures of a large number of operators throughout a series of years, supplemented by a careful weighing of the many articles bearing on particular phases of the subject which have been published in cement, engineering, and building magazines. To many it will appear that this book is unduly critical. For this no apology is offered. As the. industry grows much of the evil herein criticised will pass away, and it is hoped that this work may, in some measure, aid in giving to the weaknesses of the industry that prominence which can alone secure their eradication, to the end that concrete blocks may universally attain that high regard now accorded in localities where they are manufactured by really able hands. . As no allusion to patents is made in the text, the author deems it but fair to here state that very many of the designs and machines shown are protected by letters patent. To those manufacturers whose ready cooperation has been both a powerful stimulus and a substantial aid in the production of this work grateful acknowledgment is rendered. To those who have so generously furnished illustrations ofthe machines they make, and of the buildings, blocks, and special members produced in machines or molds of their manufacture, the authors thanks are due. Finite Element Methods for Engineering Sciences - Theoretical Approach and Problem Solving Techniques (Hardcover, 2009 ed.):... Finite Element Methods for Engineering Sciences - Theoretical Approach and Problem Solving Techniques (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Joel Chaskalovic
R1,429 Discovery Miles 14 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This self-tutorial offers a concise yet thorough grounding in the mathematics necessary for successfully applying FEMs to practical problems in science and engineering. The unique approach first summarizes and outlines the finite-element mathematics in general and then, in the second and major part, formulates problem examples that clearly demonstrate the techniques of functional analysis via numerous and diverse exercises. The solutions of the problems are given directly afterwards. Using this approach, the author motivates and encourages the reader to actively acquire the knowledge of finite-element methods instead of passively absorbing the material, as in most standard textbooks. The enlarged English-language edition, based on the original French, also contains a chapter on the approximation steps derived from the description of nature with differential equations and then applied to the specific model to be used. Furthermore, an introduction to tensor calculus using distribution theory offers further insight for readers with different mathematical backgrounds.
