Hot Isostatic Processing (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): H.V. Atkinson, B.A. Rickinson Hot Isostatic Processing (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
H.V. Atkinson, B.A. Rickinson
R4,797 Discovery Miles 47 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the increasingly exploited technology of Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIPping). It is intended for two audiences. Firstly, the manufacturing or design engineer who may not have a materials science background, but who needs to develop an appreciation of the scope of the HIPping process. Secondly, the engineering or materials undergraduate who needs to understand how HIPping as a modern manufacturing method can offer potential improvements to material properties relative to more conventional techniques. In view of the breadth of potential readership the text is written as far as possible in such a way that technical terms are explained as the reader goes along. There is little mathematics and the focus is on discussing the principal issues. For the reader who wishes to pursue the subject a further reading section has been compiled. For the student, a number of worked examples are also provided. Most of the worked examples are accessible to anyone with a good grasp of A-level physics.

Wei Chen, Christopher Hoyle, Henk Jan Wassenaar
R6,551 Discovery Miles 65 510 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Building upon the fundamental principles of decision theory, Decision-Based Design: Integrating Consumer Preferences into Engineering Design presents an analytical approach to enterprise-driven Decision-Based Design (DBD) as a rigorous framework for decision making in engineering design. Once the related fundamentals of decision theory, economic analysis, and econometrics modelling are established, the remaining chapters describe the entire process, the associated analytical techniques, and the design case studies for integrating consumer preference modeling into the enterprise-driven DBD framework. Methods for identifying key attributes, optimal design of human appraisal experiments, data collection, data analysis, and demand model estimation are presented and illustrated using engineering design case studies. The scope of the chapters also provides: A rigorous framework of integrating the interests from both producer and consumers in engineering design, Analytical techniques of consumer choice modelling to forecast the impact of engineering decisions, Methods for synthesizing business and engineering models in multidisciplinary design environments, and Examples of effective application of Decision-Based Design supported by case studies. No matter whether you are an engineer facing decisions in consumer related product design, an instructor or student of engineering design, or a researcher exploring the role of decision making and consumer choice modelling in design, Decision-Based Design: Integrating Consumer Preferences into Engineering Design provides a reliable reference over a range of key topics.

Concrete-Block Manufacture - Processes And Machines (Hardcover): H. H. Rice Concrete-Block Manufacture - Processes And Machines (Hardcover)
H. H. Rice
R927 Discovery Miles 9 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

PREFACE. THE object of this book is to present in a simple manner those well-established principles of concreting which practice has shown applicable to the manufacture of concrete blocks for building hollow walls. The theoretical and technical questions which arise in connec- tion with the industry are only considered in so far as benefit may result to the operator in the actual manufacture of blocks and their use in construction. The conclusions which have been reached are the result not only of the authors experience in actual work, but of a careful consideration of the successes and failures of a large number of operators throughout a series of years, supplemented by a careful weighing of the many articles bearing on particular phases of the subject which have been published in cement, engineering, and building magazines. To many it will appear that this book is unduly critical. For this no apology is offered. As the. industry grows much of the evil herein criticised will pass away, and it is hoped that this work may, in some measure, aid in giving to the weaknesses of the industry that prominence which can alone secure their eradication, to the end that concrete blocks may universally attain that high regard now accorded in localities where they are manufactured by really able hands. . As no allusion to patents is made in the text, the author deems it but fair to here state that very many of the designs and machines shown are protected by letters patent. To those manufacturers whose ready cooperation has been both a powerful stimulus and a substantial aid in the production of this work grateful acknowledgment is rendered. To those who have so generously furnished illustrations ofthe machines they make, and of the buildings, blocks, and special members produced in machines or molds of their manufacture, the authors thanks are due. Finite Element Methods for Engineering Sciences - Theoretical Approach and Problem Solving Techniques (Hardcover, 2009 ed.):... Finite Element Methods for Engineering Sciences - Theoretical Approach and Problem Solving Techniques (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Joel Chaskalovic
R1,429 Discovery Miles 14 290 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This self-tutorial offers a concise yet thorough grounding in the mathematics necessary for successfully applying FEMs to practical problems in science and engineering. The unique approach first summarizes and outlines the finite-element mathematics in general and then, in the second and major part, formulates problem examples that clearly demonstrate the techniques of functional analysis via numerous and diverse exercises. The solutions of the problems are given directly afterwards. Using this approach, the author motivates and encourages the reader to actively acquire the knowledge of finite-element methods instead of passively absorbing the material, as in most standard textbooks. The enlarged English-language edition, based on the original French, also contains a chapter on the approximation steps derived from the description of nature with differential equations and then applied to the specific model to be used. Furthermore, an introduction to tensor calculus using distribution theory offers further insight for readers with different mathematical backgrounds.

This authoritative reference work will provide readers with a complete overview of artificial intelligence (AI), including its historic development and current status, existing and projected AI applications, and present and potential future impact on the United States and the world. Some people believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize modern life in ways that improve human existence. Others say that the promise of AI is overblown. Still others contend that AI applications could pose a grave threat to the economic security of millions of people by taking their jobs and otherwise rendering them "obsolete"-or, even worse, that AI could actually spell the end of the human race. This volume will help users understand the reasons AI development has both spirited defenders and alarmed critics; explain theories and innovations like Moore's Law, mindcloning, and Technological Singularity that drive AI research and debate; and give readers the information they need to make their own informed judgment about the promise and peril of this technology. All of this coverage is presented using language and terminology accessible to a lay audience. Introduction explaining the historical evolution of AI Chronology of important AI-related events Authoritative entries on leading pioneers, entrepreneurs, and thinkers; AI concepts and theories; AI's potential impact on different facets of society; and major movies and other cultural touchstones exploring AI technology

Resilience by Teaming in Supply Chains and Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Rodrigo Reyes Levalle Resilience by Teaming in Supply Chains and Networks (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Rodrigo Reyes Levalle
R3,246 Discovery Miles 32 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Real-world supply chains and networks are inherently complex, formed by a large number of self-governing interconnected agents which dynamically update their behavior rules and connections based on context and environment changes. Oftentimes, these complex systems fail, almost inexplicably, due to unforeseen events leading to disruption. Exploration and research of the mechanisms behind the failure of supply chains and networks have revealed that those capable of surviving are not only robust, but resilient. The purpose of this book is to explain the meaning of resilience and its design in the broad context, and with a focus on the design and management of supply chains and supply networks. Written by Dr. Reyes Levalle, an experienced supply chains designer and supply networks engineer, the book is intended for beginners and advanced professionals, students, designers, policy makers, and managers. It is a pioneering effort to base resilience engineering and management on CCT, the collaborative control theory and tools.

Wilhelmus H Schilders, Henk A.Van Der Vorst, Joost Rommes
R4,090 Discovery Miles 40 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The idea for this book originated during the workshop "Model order reduction, coupled problems and optimization" held at the Lorentz Center in Leiden from S- tember 19-23, 2005. During one of the discussion sessions, it became clear that a book describing the state of the art in model order reduction, starting from the very basics and containing an overview of all relevant techniques, would be of great use for students, young researchers starting in the ?eld, and experienced researchers. The observation that most of the theory on model order reduction is scattered over many good papers, making it dif?cult to ?nd a good starting point, was supported by most of the participants. Moreover, most of the speakers at the workshop were willing to contribute to the book that is now in front of you. The goal of this book, as de?ned during the discussion sessions at the workshop, is three-fold: ?rst, it should describe the basics of model order reduction. Second, both general and more specialized model order reduction techniques for linear and nonlinear systems should be covered, including the use of several related numerical techniques. Third, the use of model order reduction techniques in practical appli- tions and current research aspects should be discussed. We have organized the book according to these goals. In Part I, the rationale behind model order reduction is explained, and an overview of the most common methods is described.

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems in Engineering - Some Approximate Approaches (Hardcover, 2011): Vasile Marinca, Nicolae Herisanu Nonlinear Dynamical Systems in Engineering - Some Approximate Approaches (Hardcover, 2011)
Vasile Marinca, Nicolae Herisanu
R4,070 Discovery Miles 40 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents and extend different known methods to solve different types of strong nonlinearities encountered by engineering systems. A better knowledge of the classical methods presented in the first part lead to a better choice of the so-called base functions . These are absolutely necessary to obtain the auxiliary functions involved in the optimal approaches which are presented in the second part.
Every chapter introduces a distinct approximate method applicable to nonlinear dynamical systems. Each approximate analytical approach is accompanied by representative examples related to nonlinear dynamical systems from to various fields of engineering."

TQM-based Project Planning (Hardcover, 1996 ed.): D.L Kimbler, W.G. Ferrell TQM-based Project Planning (Hardcover, 1996 ed.)
D.L Kimbler, W.G. Ferrell
R4,117 Discovery Miles 41 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

TQM-based Project Planning addresses the dual issues of planning and quality improvement. It presents a set of tools, or methods, in a logical order, reinforced by the use of rolling examples. The examples, one from manufacturing and one from the service industry, constitute integrating contexts, linking the chapters. An additional example deals with the implementation of a TQM program in the context of project planning. The tools and methods are the common ones of quality improvement including the seven quality tools, the seven management and planning tools, deployment flowcharting, and methods from Hoshin planning. The unique aspect of the book is not the tools, but their presentation within an integrated structure. This exceptional book gives both understanding of the individual methods and of how they fit together in a successful project. As such it is the ideal text for engineering and project managers, managers of small businesses and quality managers in companies and organisations of all sizes.
