Design for Life - Creating Meaning in a Distracted World (Paperback): Stuart Walker Design for Life - Creating Meaning in a Distracted World (Paperback)
Stuart Walker
R1,143 Discovery Miles 11 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Stuart Walker's design work has been described as life-changing, inspiring, disturbing and ferocious. Drawing on an extraordinarily diverse range of sources and informed by creative practice, Design for Life penetrates to the heart of modern culture and the malaise that underlies today's moral and environmental crises. The author argues that this malaise is deep-seated and fundamental to the modern outlook. He shows how our preoccupation with technological progress, growth and the future has produced a constricted view of life - one that is both destructive and self-reinforcing. Based on over twenty-five years of scholarship and creative practice, he demonstrates the vital importance of solitude, contemplation, inner growth and the present moment in developing a different course - one that looks squarely at our current, precarious situation while offering a positive, hopeful way forward - a way that is compassionate, context-based, human scale, ethically motivated and critically creative. Design for Life is an intensely original contribution that will be essential reading for design practitioners and students. Written in a clear, accessible style, it will also appeal to a broader readership, especially anyone who is concerned with contemporary society's rising inequalities and environmental failings and is looking for a more constructive, balanced and thoughtful direction.

Contemporary British Art - An Introduction (Paperback): Grant Pooke Contemporary British Art - An Introduction (Paperback)
Grant Pooke
R1,281 Discovery Miles 12 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The last few decades have been among the most dynamic within recent British cultural history. Artists across all genres and media have developed and re-fashioned their practice against a radically changing social and cultural landscape - both national and global. This book takes a fresh look at some of the themes, ideas and directions which have informed British art since the later 1980s through to the first decade of the new millennium. In addition to discussing some iconic images and examples, it also looks more broadly at the contexts in which a new 'post-conceptual' generation of artists, those typically born since the late 1950s and 1960s have approached and developed aspects of their professional practice. Contemporary British Art is an ideal introduction to the field. To guide the reader, the book is organised around genres or related practices - painting; sculpture and installation; and film, video and performance. The first chapter explores aspects of the contemporary art market and some of the contexts within which art is made, supported and exhibited. The chapters that discuss various genres of art practice also mention books that may be useful to support further reading. Extensively illustrated with a wide range of work (both known, and less well-known) from artists such as Chris Ofili, Rachel Whiteread, Damien Hirst, Banksy, Anthony Gormley, Jack Vettriano, Sam Taylor-Wood, Steve McQueen and Tracey Emin, and many more.

Fraud and Corruption - Prevention and Detection (Hardcover, New edition): Nigel Iyer, Martin Samociuk Fraud and Corruption - Prevention and Detection (Hardcover, New edition)
Nigel Iyer, Martin Samociuk
R4,509 Discovery Miles 45 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Executives are under enormous pressure to meet stakeholder expectations regarding the prevention of fraud and corruption. However, the drive to demonstrate that they are complying with legislative requirements and high principles has, in many cases, overshadowed the need to deal with the problem itself. As a result, fraud and corruption remain a significant unmanaged source of risk for many organizations. Drawing on experiences across Europe, America and Australia, Iyer and Samociuk give you the tools to establish an effective and far-reaching anti-fraud and corruption programme. Included is a compendium of techniques for assessing the true risk of fraud and corruption, reducing those risks and using health checks to provide early warnings. Also included is The Tightrope, A Story of Fraud and Corruption...which takes the reader from first suspicions through crisis and finally recovery in a vivid and instructive style, covering the lessons in the main text. This new book is a must-read for all those responsible for the prevention of fraud and corruption, risk management, corporate compliance, corporate responsibility and governance.

The Oxford Handbook of Expertise (Paperback): Paul Ward, Jan Maarten Schraagen, Julie Gore, Emilie M. Roth The Oxford Handbook of Expertise (Paperback)
Paul Ward, Jan Maarten Schraagen, Julie Gore, Emilie M. Roth
R3,954 Discovery Miles 39 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The study of expertise weaves its way through various communities of practice, across disciplines, and over millennia. To date, the study of expertise has been primarily concerned with how human beings perform at a superior level in complex environments and sociotechnical systems, and at the highest levels of proficiency. However, more recent research has continued the search for better descriptions, and causal mechanisms that explain the complexities of expertise in context, with a view to translating this understanding into useful predictions and interventions capable of improving the performance of human systems as efficiently as possible. The Oxford Handbook of Expertise provides a comprehensive picture of the field of Expertise Studies. It offers both traditional and contemporary perspectives, and importantly, a multidiscipline-multimethod view of the science and engineering research on expertise. The book presents different perspectives, theories, and methods of conducting expertise research, all of which have had an impact in helping us better understand expertise across a broad range of domains. The Handbook also describes how researchers and practitioners have addressed practical problems and societal challenges. Throughout, the authors have sought to demonstrate the heterogeneity of approaches and conceptions of expertise, to place current views of expertise in context, to show how these views can be used to address current issues, and to examine ways to advance the study of expertise. The Oxford Handbook of Expertise is an essential resource both to those wanting to gain an up-to-date knowledge of the science of expertise and those wishing to study experts.

Lenka Duranova, Sandra Ohly
R1,882 Discovery Miles 18 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The aim of this work is to provide insight into the process of employee recovery and well-being in regard to work-related ICT use during after-hours. Therefore, we discuss (1) theories that help us to understand the determinants and outcomes of this behavior, (2) our core concepts recovery and well-being, and (3) previous empirical findings on ICT use after hours for work purposes. On the basis of literature review, we propose a new conceptual overall framework of ICT use after hours for work purposes with the focus on employee recovery and well-being processes. Thereby, we posit ICT use after hours for work purposes as potential stressor, resource, or demand (see action theory by Hacker, 1998, 2003; Frese and Zapf 1994), depending on many personal and environmental factors, but primarily on cognitive appraisals (see transactional model of stress by Lazarus and Folkman 1984). This three-way division enables us to propose various linear and non-linear associations to focused outcomes. We conclude with an overall discussion on further research concerning the identified research gaps.

We all know that safety should be an integral part of the systems that we build and operate. The public demands that they are protected from accidents, yet industry and government do not always know how to reach this common goal. This book gives engineers and managers working in companies and governments around the world a pragmatic and reasonable approach to system safety and risk assessment techniques. It explains in easy-to-understand language how to design workable safety management systems and implement tested solutions immediately. The book is intended for working engineers who know that they need to build safe systems, but aren't sure where to start. To make it easy to get started quickly, it includes numerous real-life engineering examples. The book's many practical tips and best practices explain not only how to prevent accidents, but also how to build safety into systems at a sensible price. This book explores the interplay of farm mechanization, human factors and climatic and other environmental uncertainty in agriculture, using an ergonomics based approach to discuss solutions to the traditionally acknowledged vulnerability of the sector. It converges contemporary research documentation, case studies and international standards on agricultural ergonomics, engineering anthropometry, human factors, basic occupational health services, safety management, human performance and system sustainability to provide a handy reference to students and professionals working to optimize agricultural output while balancing the rational utilization of labour in agricultural practices and human well-being.
