Zinc and Diseases of the Digestive Tract (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): J.D.Kruse- Jarres, J. Schoelmerich Zinc and Diseases of the Digestive Tract (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
J.D.Kruse- Jarres, J. Schoelmerich
R4,081 Discovery Miles 40 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Zinc has an important role in human physiology due to its involvement in numerous enzymatic reactions and its other functions as part of hormones and structural proteins. As a consequence a wide variety of symptoms may occur in different states of zinc deficiency. Several diseases of the digestive tract can lead to zinc deficiency and consequently to deficiency symptoms. This book, the proceedings of an International Falk Workshop held in Freiburg, Germany, on 27 October 1996, aims at a dialogue between basic researchers and gastroenterologists in order to improve the understanding of the role of zinc in disorders of the digestive tract. Based on lectures on the role of zinc in cell biology, the pathophysiology of zinc deficiency and consequently the possibilities of zinc substitution in these disorders is discussed. It is hoped that this book will initiate fruitful discussions and collaborations leading to a better knowledge of the role of this trace element in gastroenterology.

Diverticular Disease: Emerging Evidence in a Common Condition (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): W. Kruis, A. Forbes, K-W. Jauch, M. E.... Diverticular Disease: Emerging Evidence in a Common Condition (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
W. Kruis, A. Forbes, K-W. Jauch, M. E. Kreis, S. D. Wexner
R4,028 Discovery Miles 40 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Treating patients with abdominal symptoms secondary to colonic diverticula is daily practice for general practitioners, gastroenterologists, surgeons and other physicians. At first sight, diagnosis and therapy seem to be straightforward. Nevertheless, discussions on details concerning understanding and management of this disorder often reveal differing views and immediately demonstrate that many questions remain unresolved. An approach to diverticular disease that is generally accepted is lacking. One reason may be that there is a certain paucity of scientific discussion. In contrast to other topics, diverticular disease is rarely found on the agenda of meetings and symposia. The book, the proceedings of Falk Symposium 148 on Diverticular Disease: Emerging Evidence in a Common Condition, held in Munich, Germany, on 17-18 June 2005, covers many aspects of diverticular disease, from new scientific knowledge to exchange of clinical.

Helicobacter Pylori 1998 - Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure (Hardcover): R.H. Hunt, Guido N.J. Tytgat Helicobacter Pylori 1998 - Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure (Hardcover)
R.H. Hunt, Guido N.J. Tytgat
R2,470 Discovery Miles 24 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The explosion of information on Helicobacter pylori-related disease, both in the basic sciences and in clinical medicine, has continued to progress at an unprecedented pace. In many instances H. pylori infection, both in man and in the laboratory animal, has become a model to investigate fundamental biological issues such as micro-organism host interactions, intracellular signalling, development of mucosal atrophy, mechanism of microbial resistance, disease modifying factors etc. In view of this bewildering flood of information, another meeting on H. pylori in the successful series "Basic mechanisms to clinical cure" was organized in January 1998 in San Diego, California, to define the "state-of-affairs" in H. pylori research at this time. The main objective was to integrate this information in a series of presentations and discussions between investigators and clinicians addressing all aspects of H. pylori research and to review the current position and future research directions. The format included presentations by world experts heavily involved in H. pylori research followed by in-depth discussion on intriguing or controversial issues. The presentations were grouped according to the leading theme: characteristics of the organism, mode of transmission, mechanisms of H. pylori-induced inflammation, causation of disturbances of gastric secretory and motor function, aspects of clinical presentation and management, problems related to H. pylori-associated gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT-lymphoma, novel aspects of antimicrobial therapy and vaccination. The chapters published in these proceedings accurately reflect the content of the presentations. These proceedings are testimony to the impact on basic science and clinical medicine of the H. pylori discovery.

Physical Activity and the Gastro-Intestinal Tract - Responses in health and disease (Hardcover): Roy J. Shephard Physical Activity and the Gastro-Intestinal Tract - Responses in health and disease (Hardcover)
Roy J. Shephard
R4,922 Discovery Miles 49 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The organs of the gastro-intestinal tract play an essential role in sustained physical activity, but their consideration in exercise-related literature has, to this point, been limited. Physical Activity and the Gastro-Intestinal Tract is the first book to explain the function and response to exercise of the gastro-intestinal system, in cases of both health and disease, and helps to shed light on the role they play in acute and chronic exercise. Professor Roy Shephard synthesises previously disparate research to explain the physiology, function, pathology of disease and role of exercise in both health and chronic disease, covering topics including: physical activity and the oesophagus gastro-duodenal function and physical activity physical activity and peptic ulcers physical activity and gastro-oesophageal cancers physical activity and the function of the large bowel physical activity and chronic intestinal inflammation. With each chapter including a thorough bibliography and signposts to further reading, Physical Activity and the Gastro-Intestinal Tract provides a complete reference for understanding how exercise affects the function of the digestive organs. It is an important text for academics and upper-level students in sports medicine and exercise physiology, and for health professionals in preventative medicine.

PIPAC - Pressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy - Cancer under Pressure (Hardcover, Digital original): Marc A.... PIPAC - Pressurized IntraPeritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy - Cancer under Pressure (Hardcover, Digital original)
Marc A. Reymond, Wiebke Solass
R5,028 Discovery Miles 50 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Peritoneal dissemination is a common route of cancer metastasis. The benefit of administering chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal cavity is supported by preclinical and pharmacokinetic data. In comparison to intravenous (IV) treatment, intraperitoneal (IP) administration results in a several-fold increase in drug concentration within the abdominal cavity. There is now growing evidence from clinical studies showing a survival advantage for IP chemotherapy in various tumor typies, including ovarian, gastric and colorectal cancer. However, while the use of IP chemotherapy is slowly gaining acceptance, it is not universal, largely due to the greater toxicity associated with this approach. Moreover, efficacy of IP chemotherapy is limited by poor distribution within the abdominal cavity and by poor tissue penetration. A new way of IP chemotherapy is the application of cytotoxics in form of a pressurized aerosol into the abdominal of thoracic cavity. Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) is applied through laparoscopic access using two balloon trocars in an operating room equipped with laminar air-flow. In a first step,a normothermic capnoperitoneum is established with a pressure of 12 mmHg. A cytotoxic solution (about 10% of a normal systemic dose) is nebulized with a micropump into the abdominal cavity, and maintained for 30 min. The aerosol is then removed through a closed suction system. Applying an aerosol in the peritoneal cavity allows a homogeneous distribution of the chemotherapeutic agent within the abdomen. Furthermore, an artificial pressure gradient is generated that overcomes tumoral interstitial fluid pressure, an obstacle in cancer therapy. This results in a higher local drug concentration compared to conventional IP or IV chemotherapy. At the same time the plasma concentration of the chemotherapeutic agent remains low. In first clinical studies with limited number of patients in ovarian, gastric and colorectal cancer, as well as peritoneal mesothelioma, PIPAC has obtained encouraging tumor response rates and survival, with a low-side effects profile. Larger clinical trials are currently ongoing to examine if these data can be reproduced and extrapolated to other situations.
