I consider as a teacher, as well as what she has done to bring
intelligence to the world of nutrition.' Dr Mark Hyman Eat your way
to a faster metabolism, easier weight loss and better health - from
New York Times bestselling author and health pioneer Ann Louise
Gittleman. One reason many diets fail is that they don't correct
the shutdown of key fat-burning tissues in the body: brown fat,
muscle and the microbiome. Each of these prefers a specific type of
food for optimal function and this expert book tells you exactly
how to fuel them. Radical Metabolism will shake up your long-held
beliefs and assumptions about what is healthy, especially when it
comes to diet. However, this isn't just about weight loss - this is
about putting the brakes on ageing, gaining the tools necessary to
dodge age-related illness and staying energised for life. The book
is divided into three sections: The first section lays out the
scientific basis for the Radical Metabolism plan so that you can
understand the rationale behind the programme. Discover the five
radical rules for rescuing your metabolism, the forgotten but
powerful role bile plays in the body's slimming systems and the
hero ingredients that are key to lasting weight loss. The second
section is the eating diet plan. It starts off with the 4-Day
Radical Intensive Cleanse, a simple juicing-and-souping detox plan
designed to give your liver and gallbladder a rest before the main
programme. The 21-Day Radical Reboot will teach you how to reawaken
and retrain your metabolism to build a lasting and lean body. The
third section expands the menu with a collection of 49 recipes
(anglicised for UK readers) and provides a maintenance plan and
additional guidance for staying on track for life. An
easy-to-follow programme with the nutritional and scientific
research to back it up, this book offers simple strategies that
produce radical results. REAP THE BENEFITS OF A RADICAL METABOLISM:
- Lasting weight loss - Greater energy - Balanced mood - Healthier
skin - Protection against health problems, such as type II diabetes

The new edition of The Best of Five MCQS for the European Specialty
Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology is a question book
designed to assist in preparations for the European Specialty
Examination in Gastroenterology and Hepatology (ESEGH). The book
has been fully updated to reflect the new examination introduced in
2018 and the most recent guidelines. Containing a foreword by Sir
Ian Gilmore, former president of both the British Society for
Gastroenterology and the Royal College of Physicians, the book
adopts the same Best of Five question format used in the ESEGH and
covers the breadth of the curriculum. It has been designed to
exactly match the relative proportion of questions on each topic
area found in the examination. Each of the 300 questions contained
in the book is accompanied by an answer, a set of three succinct
bullet points of key 'take-home' messages, and a short summary of
the relevant background, evidence-base and up-to-date European
guidelines. The book ends with a chapter of 50 questions, which
again matches the proportions of topic areas found in the ESEGH,
and is designed to act as a mock-examination for use in the final
stages of preparation.

We live in an era of personalized medicine and the knowledge about
pathophysiology of diffuse gastric cancer has had many advances.
Thus, the role of this work is to clarify what is new from
diagnosis to treatment of this disease in order to treat patients
in the most tailored manner as possible. Almost all phase III
trials in gastric cancer have been performed without taking in
consideration histologic subtypes, i.e. they have disregarded the
differences between diffuse gastric cancer and general gastric
cancer. However, the clinical practice reveals that diffuse gastric
cancer is a completely distinct disease, with an aggressive course
and generally worse prognosis. The loss of cohesion between tumor
cells due to the loss of E-cadherin synthesis is the critical point
on the oncogenesis of diffuse gastric cancer and is at the root of
its marked heredity. This book intends to give special attention to
Diffuse Gastric Cancer as a particular oncological entity,
differentiating it from general gastric cancer, exploring and
discussing all its peculiarities, and addressing the basic aspects
(pathology and genetics) along with the most recent therapeutic
alternatives for this condition.

This book reviews the latest advances in treating ulcerative
colitis. Its structure is designed to reflect the natural
presentation of the disease; accordingly, it starts with the
symptoms and the clinical picture, before addressing the use of
radiological and endoscopic studies that are performed to make a
diagnosis, and the role of the pathological examination. The book
also includes detailed information on the medical treatment of the
disease, written by some of the most expert gastroenterologists in
the field, while also paying considerable attention to the latest
medical treatments and to expected future developments. The book
describes various surgical techniques for ulcerative colitis in
detail, providing readers with concrete guidelines on which is the
most appropriate operation to perform in any given case. It also
presents extensive information on the most important operation, the
formation of the IPAA (ileal pouch-anal anastomosis), together with
helpful tips and tricks. A closing chapter addresses the long-term
complications that can occur after a pouch formation, and what to
do for each case. As such, the book offers a unique and
comprehensive guide for surgeons, gastroenterologists, researchers
and students alike.
Providing an essential brainstem relay for three cranial nerves,
the NST coordinates highly complex sensory information. While other
functions of the NST have received attention, its role in gustatory
processing has received little. The first reference devoted
exclusively to gustatory processing, The Role of the Nucleus of the
Solitary Tract in Gustatory Processing offers an in-depth review of
one of the most important central relay stations in the brain.
Combining widely dispersed research into a comprehensive single
volume, it presents a thorough historical background, documents the
anatomy of the rostral nucleus of the solitary tract (rNST), and
explores the properties of synaptic transmitters and neurons within
that tract. The book examines the role of reflex activities and
considers factors that influence how gustatory rNST neurons respond
to taste stimuli. It describes the development and maturational
changes the rNST undergoes and considers the challenge involved
with identifying rNST neural circuits. The Role of the Nucleus of
the Solitary Tract in Gustatory Processing brings together expert
investigators who have contributed substantially to the current
knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and developmental biology of
the solitary nucleus. This pertinent work serves as a standard
reference for those involved in the field, providing ready access
to past investigations and inviting practitioners to create new
approaches that will advance knowledge about the central processing
of gustatory information.

Clinical review articles from expert authors are specifically
devoted to the following: The Role of the Microbiome of o the
Female Reproductive Tract on Health and Pregnancy; Eating Disorders
and the Gut Microbiota; Maturation of the Infant Microbiome
Community Structure and Function; Microbe-Host Interactions in
Allergic Diseases; Emerging Role of the Gut Microbiota in
Neurodevelopmental Disorders; Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis and Mood
Disorders; Brain-Gut-Microbiota and ADHD; The Microbiota-Gut-Brain
Axis and Postpartum Depression; and The Microbiota and Pancreatic
Cancer. Readers will come away with the latest information on the
microbiome and how to incorporate the information into gut health
for patients.
This volume provides a comprehensive summary of the field, with
expert recommendations on prediction and management. It details the
recent consensus guidelines (2012) updating the definition of
pancreatitis and its complications. The text thoughtfully
summarizes the current prediction models for severe acute
pancreatitis, including laboratory, clinical and imaging
parameters. It also highlights the relative advantages and
disadvantages of several of these models. Evidenced-based
guidelines into medical and surgical management of both the
hospitalized and discharged patient are described, with
recommendations from expert authors pertaining to various clinical
situations. Finally, complications of acute pancreatitis and their
management, including the use of cutting-edge minimally-invasive
therapies, is discussed. Prediction and Management of Severe Acute
Pancreatitis will serve as the fundamental source for those
interested in and treating this disease, including practicing
gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiologists, intensivists,
hospitalists and pathologists.
Anorectal Disorders: Diagnosis and Nonsurgical Treatments
incorporates the most recent major advances in the understanding of
anal and rectal anatomy to provide clinical evidence of care for
those suffering from anorectal disorders. By condensing basic and
practical aspects in the knowledge of anorectal disorders, this
book provides a comprehensive review of the anatomy and physiology
of the anorectal region. It includes new technology that expands
and modifies current perceptions about the functional anatomy of
the anorectal region and ultimately impacts how we conceive muscle
and nerve structures functioning together to maintain fecal
continence and properly execute the process of defecation. Perfect
for medical researchers, gastroenterologists, general
practitioners, internal medicine doctors and general surgeons, this
title will provide diagnosis and treatment options for all patients
suffering from anorectal disorders.

Surgery has traditionally been the standard of care for the
treatment of neoplastic lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. With
advances in endoscopic resection techniques, there has been a
paradigm shift in how to approach many of these precancerous and
early cancerous lesions. Potential advantages of endoscopic
resection include its minimally invasiveness which often translates
into quicker patient recovery. In recent years, there have been
major strides in safety and efficacy of minimally invasive
endoscopic approaches with ongoing advances in therapeutic
endoscopy. Advanced Techniques for Endoscopic Resection in the GI
Tract by Drs. Peter V. Draganov, Takuji Gotoda, and Dennis J. Yang
provides an in-depth analysis of the current state of advanced
endoscopic techniques for the evaluation and resection in the
gastrointestinal tract. Each chapter in the book addresses specific
topics such as: - Endoscopic evaluation of lesions - Technical
aspects of the procedure - Management of adverse events -
Post-procedural care and follow-up Advanced Techniques for
Endoscopic Resection in the GI Tract provides a comprehensive
review of all the different aspects of advanced endoscopic
resection in the gastrointestinal tract which makes it ideal for
interventional GI endoscopists and general gastroenterologists, as
well as surgeons.
