From 18th Century poetry up to modern 3D cinema, the vampire has developed a genre in its own right. Leaving behind its roots in phantasmagoria and horror, taking in romance, action and adventure, as well as flights of science fiction fantasy and political allegory. The vampire is a part of all these fields of artistry and beyond them, a melting pot of imagination and invention that has captivated audiences around the world. In the first part of this volume, Andrew M. Boylan - author of the famous vampire blog Taliesin Meets the Vampires, looks at the genesis of the vampire genre from Ossenfelder's poem Der Vampir to Bram Stoker's seminal novel Dracula. The second part of the book spreads eclectically out from Dracula, just as the genre spread, taking in some famous kissing cousins of the genre as well as looking at the vampire's changing relationship with the divine and following the toothsome bloodsuckers out into space.
A colourful history of advertising. The process of producing goods and services is relatively easy to recognize as socially beneficial. But television ads? Telemarketers? Jingles? Junk mail? It is popular to view these commercial activities as inherently wasteful or manipulative, marginally informative or entertaining, at best. The most vociferous critics marshal economic and sociological data to argue that advertising dilutes culture and moral values, encourages conspicuous consumption, defrauds the public, and promotes dangerous products and behaviours. In Selling the Dream, John Hood takes the provocative stand that advertising images and sales pitches are actually part of the goods and services themselves, delivering an essential component of the consumer's experience. As such, they are inextricably linked to the basic tenets of the free-market system, and, in the boldest of terms, Hood argues that commercial communication is morally consistent with the principles of a democratic society, including freedom of choice, competition, and innovation. Tracing the history of advertising from Ancient Roman times to the present, through the first American newspaper ad in 1704, P.T. the modern consumer society, Hood offers a colourful account of advertising in its cultural context. Moreover, he addresses such controversial issues as the promotion of harmful and immoral products (such as tobacco and alcohol), marketing to children, the role of advertising in service industries such as health care and education, and the impact of the Internet and other new media on the conduct of commerce. In the process, he offers a compelling perspective on advertising and its essential role in business, communication, and popular culture. Advertising is a ubiquitous part of our consumer culture. It draws from business, economics, politics, and history to present a colourful picture of advertising in context and argues that advertising is an essential ingredient of competition, innovation, and free-market economic growth. Deals with controversial issues, such as advertising immoral products and advertising to children.

This book portrays the world history in an entirely new landscape which highlights the pace of development of all the major civilizations of the world since the dawn of human history. Man's rational behavior compelled him to search and innovate new things in order to emerge victorious in his struggle for existence, and in the process, he elevated human civilization. But different civilizations developed on different lines. Some were fast initially but later turned static, and some were static initially but later gained momentum to become world leaders, while some were in between. The author has broadly categorizes all the world civilizations into seven segments and demonstrated their behavior of development graphically. Indian civilization has been evaluated as initially glorious and highly developed, but later it turned static due to several inherent factors. Anglo-Saxon civilization has been adjudged as initially primitive and after AD 1000 it began to move slowly and later gained pace to become world leader. It has been suggested in the book that Indians should learn from the Anglo-Saxons and should follow their road to development, which has been heavily propitiated with scientific and technological innovations and rational thinking since AD 1000.
This book was inspired by an Exploratory Arts school project for our son in middle school. The profound influence this school project had on our son and our entire family motivated us to continue collecting Drunk and Drugged Driving statistics so we could provide "Daily Doses of Reality" to you and your family. Twelve years later, our youngest son is now 24 years old and he survived his teenage years without accidents or incidents involving drugs or alcohol. We consider ourselves a very lucky family; statistics show that one in every five people will be affected by a drunk or drugged driver at one time in their lives.
