Examines prisons and prison systems throughout the world. Prisons have undoubtedly changed over the years, as have penal practices in general, though more so in some countries than others. Prisons and prison systems have long been an overlooked part of criminal justice research, and as a result, limited material is available on many institutions. This comprehensive encyclopedia provides an historical overview of institutions and systems around the world, as well as penal theories, prisoner culture and life, and notable prisoners and personnel. Readers will find a wealth of information including material on such famous prisons as the Tower of London and Alcatraz, as well as on such topics as boot camps and parole. The other entries include Devil's Island, supermaximum prisons, Nelson Mandela, the Pennsylvania system, and Amnesty International. Also, numerous appendixes list famous prisoners, prison museums, prison slang, and more.
Michael R. Collings examines the life and work of American science fiction author Piers Anthony. Starmont Reader's Guide 20.
This book is about one man's successful quest to reverse his cardiovascular disease and his wife's stage 3 lung cancer in their own home without mainstream pharmaceuticals, chemotherapy, or radiation. Most importantly he describes the value of addressing ones overall health condition at a cellular level in order to avoid the lurking threat of developing any number of other diseases and conditions. While applying these therapies and procedures the only side effect ever noticed by the author and his wife appeared to be the gradual and steadily growing sense of good health. Although the author is not a licensed medical doctor, the therapies he and his wife strictly followed for heart disease and lung cancer are described here in full detail. You decide.

Providing fast-action science fiction novels, Startling Stories was established beginning in January 1939 as a sister publication to Thrilling Wonder Stories. Publishing 99 issues in all, and combining Fantastic Story Magazine and Thrilling Wonder Stories with its ninety-seventh issue, it finally suspended publication in Fall 1955, one of the last of the pulps to fold. Leon L. Gammell, an avid reader and collector of that period, views that era's stories with both nostalgia and objectivity; his incisive critiques will provide interested readers with numerous guideposts to a wealth of exciting fantasy and SF reading.
This is not some pie in the sky diatribe on what the VA should be. This is not a negative editorial about systemic failures. This is a veteran's user manual on the rules that govern the VA disability compensation process. Most are shocked to discover that the commonly held myths about the VA are false. What is the real purpose of disability compensation? What can be claimed? Documentation is not what you thought it was. Your military medical records mean little to the VA and are not an issue if incomplete. Your final physical means little to the VA and is not needed. So how are medical issues documented for real? When should claims be made to the VA? Yes, there are time standards for successful claims. Most get these answers wrong with disastrous results. I draw right from the laws and codes that govern the VA and provide context from my direct experience to illustrate how those rules are applied. You will know when to make claims, what to claim, how to claim, and a host of other common sense VA procedures. When finished, the veteran will have all the knowledge to make the VA function the way it was designed to and not get steamrolled by the bureaucracy or led astray by any of the veteran service organizations. By showing the reader where to look and what to look for, you will be able to make intelligent decisions as well as keep up with the subtle changes that occur in the laws over time. Nothing is stagnant. You will see just as I did that the system, while not perfect, can be made to function correctly in accordance with the governing laws. You, the veteran have a higher degree of control over your fate then most realize.
Today the name Broderick Crawford means nothing to twenty-first century young people. As far as they're concerned, All The King's Men is a miserable movie starring Sean Penn! They have absolutely no idea that way back in the twentieth century Broderick Crawford was a highly-paid major box-office Hollywood film star who made over ninety motion pictures. He also won the prized Academy Award Oscar for "Best Actor In A Starring Role". On top of that he starred in an enormously successful, blockbuster television series that ran for decades in world-wide syndication making him an unpaid babysitter for an entire generation of baby boomers. In the pages of this book, the reader will discover an extraordinary actor and film star with an incredible body of work. He enjoyed a durable career in show business spanning forty-five years that hit Hollywood's lofty heights and bottom-scraping depths more than once.

In the course of the fourth century, millions of bronze coins were struck in the Roman Empire: an area extending from modern Britain to Egypt. The iconography present in these modest remnants of a distant past provides a fascinating insight into the realities, hopes and desires not only of the common people, but also of those who ruled over them. It is possible to identify with a remarkable degree of precision where, when and by whom coins of this period were struck. Traditional numismatic works rely heavily on a textual description and assume that one has a perfectly preserved specimen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given their age, the majority of coins encountered are worn or incomplete, making identification difficult. However, as demonstrated by this work, a closer study of their composition and iconography yields more than enough information to identify all but the most poorly preserved specimens. Translation of Die spatromische Kupferpragung - Ein Bestimmungsbuch fur schlecht erhaltene Munzen (1961).
This compilation contains three of the most revered and celebrated texts by the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius. The Analects of Confucius were penned during the Warring States period of Chinese antiquity, which saw great social upheaval between the various realms of the Middle Kingdom. Divided into twenty principle chapters (called books) - the subjects range from wise behaviour in times of crisis to general instruction upon how to live a peaceful life characterised by a serene mood, humility to others, and quality work performed well. The Great Learning: One of the classic four books of ancient Confucianism consists of a short initial commentary attributed to Confucius himself, followed by a lengthier tract written by one of his disciples named Zengzi. Another classic book of Confucian thought, The Doctrine of the Mean, is a practical guide for those aspiring to sublime wisdom. It demonstrates how a balanced, harmonious manner of living is the most conducive to joy and satisfaction.

These are but a few of my recollections of the Cotter Mill from its 1958 Fremont County, Colorado inauguration to the year 2000 when General Atomics obtained the mill, four sections of industrial and rural real estate, assets and obligations for the sum of $1,000,000, or the value of a couple of neighboring homes. Contrary to popular opinion, early Cotter was not welcomed with open arms by Canon City society. As a matter of fact early employees were openly referred to as, "The unwelcome foreign element." Individual and collective efforts changed the atmosphere, especially when Cotter conveyed bargain basement priced water to a beleaguered private golf course. (29) Lynn Boughton was Cotter's Assistant Chief Chemist from 1958 to 1964 and Chief Chemist until he resigned in 1979. Lynn was my husband. We were in love and happily married for fifty-two years. We were also business partners, best friends, and sounding boards. On the subject of Cotter, Lynn talked-I listened; especially when our real estate was included in a Super Fund site, when his illness appeared related to nuclear exposure, and even more closely when his illness was proven to be indisputably caused by working with nuclear material; an illness that took his life in 2001. My memory is reasonably good, but certainly not flawless. My comments should not be taken as fact but as probably not too far wrong. After Lynn's death, I donated thousands of his documents to The University of Colorado Boulder Archives. ***** The future rests on the past but new ownerships, new administration, new bureaucracies always believe they start with a "clean slate" ignoring the past as they persist in repeating the same mistakes. In dealing with nuclear materials, mistakes affect, not only fortunes, but the health and property of neighbors and future generations. Deyon Boughton
